I’ve had a 3 tray worm bin now for about 4 years and it runs like a RR. It’s amazing to see how you do it on a larger scale but the basics are just the same, small scale or large scale. They do indeed go nuts for anything sweet, I was amazed when I fed mine mouldy old strawberries - they went bananas!

Captain, could you use place a [piece of [plywood at an angle under your bins to allow the casting fall out from under the bins? This should make harvesting easier.

Exactly my thought. Drop the back edge six or so inches for the rake, and then taper it to the top edge of the front of the base. The $2.50 rake will still function to wipe the taper. If he wants to get fancy, he could laminate the plywood to add durability and a slippery slope. Good stuff!

Hello Captain Matt, I have an idea that could save some time and bending over. You could add a piece of plywood underneath the bin at a slope from the top in the back to the bottom in the front. Basically, make a slide for the casting to drop out in front of the bin for easy scooping. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I recently looked around and found little local access to compost, teas and worms. Since I’m retired and have about 4000 square feet of garden space. I had planned on producing worm casting to save some money but now it’s looking like I can make a little money too. Already started my breeding buckets with 250 worms each that I’ll save the casting till the farmers markets and greenhouses open and see what I can do before I go full bore with this.

Love your worms, and they love the UWB almost as much as my soil loves it. The plants growing with my castings are raging compared to those I did not apply to the mix of Coast of Maine, No-Till blend. The other test I did was to use the same COM soil with the bulk castings offered by UWC; my castings outperform them as well, but their castings did improve performance of the packaged soil compared to using it as it is. Thank you for chiming in here!

Captain Matt a great video, how do you constantly avoid fungus gnats infestation? I have had 2 majors infestation-invasion in about 14 months, I have starve all my bins for 3 months, tried 5 different solutions and concuctions and nothing worked, the best results came to spray every second days with "Mosquito Dunks". Within the first week I had eliminated 90% of the flies, and the following week I was totally clear of FG, now when I feed them I also spray on top of the bedding. Again you did a great video. Thanks Phil.

I have a question about storing worm castings and I thought this might be a good place to ask it. What is the best way to store unused worm castings like over the winter? thank you for all the information that you share with us. I have been using red wigglers 2 seasons now and have an old freezer converted to a worm bin and I use worms in my outside compost bins and leaf pile making leaf mold. I am a 70 year old retired electrician and I have been studying your videos and lots of others as well but you are inspiring me to build a CFT bin. And maybe even start selling some. Thank you again!!

He has a build video series if you look at the available videos. There is a link to the schematics in the show notes of the videos. I think the rough measurements of the basin area are 8' Len x 3' wide x 2' depth... so roughly 48 ft³ if completely full

When you overwater do you put bins underneath to catch the excess or just let it drip to the concrete? If you allow it to drip have you ever had any issues with smell or stains? I have an 8' by 2' CFT in my basement and don't want to cause any issues. Thanks Capt. Matt! I'm not sure I would have undertaken this adventure without your guidance and great personality!
