Recipe (Thanks Misty for typing it up)
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tbsp flax seed
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup honey
1 cup (8 oz) greek yogurt
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1/2 mashed banana
1 chopped apple (can use applesauce)
1/3 cup frozen huckleberries (or blueberries or serviceberries)
Topping Ingredients:
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 tbsp whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp flax seed
2 tbsp cold butter
Directions:
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another, beat the eggs, honey yogurt and banana. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in apples and berries. Fill greased or paper lined muffin cups, 2/3 full.
Combine topping dry ingredients, cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbles. Sprinkle a rounded teaspoonful over each muffin.
Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan to wire rack. Serve Warm. Yields 16 muffins.

It seriously warms my heart whenever I see you spend time with Benjamin. I can't imagine how happy they will be in the future for all those wonderful, child memories you gifted them! I thankfully also have fond memories of my mother when I was young, running around in the garden helping her out! I remember gathering yellow daisies for her so we could dye our eggs in easter! Or sitting hours long outside enjoying the gorgeous show (and smell) of our sweatpeas, which were her favourite flowers. God bless you Laura, you are doing an absolute wonderful job raising them both! Wish the world had more people like you and Aaron! 🤍

I loved seeing Laura show Benjamin how to level the salt before adding and then to see him make the connection and do the same thing when she handed him the spoon of cinnamon was priceless. Their brains are like little sponges at that age. You’re a great mama, Laura, letting Benjamin get involved and have some autonomy to experience things without you controlling every second of that experience. I’m always super impressed by that.

I was told years ago where the name "Serviceberry" came from. Back in the day when people couldn't bury their dead because the ground was frozen, they would watch to see when the serviceberry bloomed. They would know then the ground was thawed enough, they could have a service for their loved one.

And as to the name Shad bush or Shad blow, the ripening of the fruit told folks back in the day that the Shad fish were running, and producing their eggs, which people would cook, both fish and eggs!

I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada (zone 3) so we call them Saskatoon berries here! I have them along my driveway between mine and my neighbour's house. They're the bush variety and get quite big. The birds get the berries from the top of the bush that I can't reach and I get the rest. We have an understanding 😂

Laura, I have had at least one serviceberry in my yard for over twenty five years. The tree is everything you said it is in your video. Ironically, it wasn’t until yesterday when I was trimming branches that I decided to taste one. I didn’t stop at one! What a treat. The birds will now have some competition. 😉 Thank you for sharing.

Sprinkle over unbaked muffins Bake at 400f for 18-20 mins. Let cool 5 min before removing

I'm a passionate gardening senior who has been following your channel for many years. I have taken on a volunteer project to rejuvenate the courtyard garden space in a Long Term Care home, where my 96 year old Mom-in-law has been receiving compassionate care for over two years. Today, my husband and I just delivered an Autumn Brilliance serviceberry tree that we will plant in the garden. This tree was my #1 choice for a particular space - I discovered your video after buying the tree. I am sharing the muffin recipe with the Life Enrichment staff at the home,. When the tree matures enough, Residents and Staff can bake muffins together with the berries from their own tree. Your videos have been a big part of inspiring me to do this garden renovation. Laura, I hope you don’t mind me posting this. ❤️ For those asking for the recipe: *Apple Streusel Muffins* 1 cup all purpose flour 2 tablespoons flaxseed 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup honey 1 cup (8 ounces) Greek yogurt 2/3 cup frozen huckleberries (or blueberries) 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs (or use 2 tablespoons of Chia + 6 tablespoons water) 1/2 mashed banana 1 chopped apple *Streusel* 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons whole wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon flax seed 2 tablespoons cold butter *Directions* Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, beat the eggs (or prepare Chia egg substitute), honey yogurt, and banana. Stir in to dry ingredients until just moistened. Fold in apples and blueberries. Fill greased or paper line muffin cups 2/3 full. Combine topping dry ingredients, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle a rounded a teaspoon over each muffin. Bake at 400°F (204°C) for 18 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks. Serve warm. Yield 16 muffins.

I have a two year old boy named Benjamin and a brand new 8 week old Gabriel! (And a husband named Aaron!) We watched this video this morning and he immediately had us make muffins with the fruit in our garden. We have been gardening with you for over a year now and I’m so overjoyed to have found you. A dream of mine was to have a garden with my kids, and your channel got me over my fear of my yard! From everything we’ve learned from you, we’ve grown a vegetable garden, fruit containers, a cut garden, a shade garden and beautified our lawn (Thanks Aaron)! Next up is trees and perennials this fall and drip irrigation!!!! Thank you for all you both do and the way you do it.

Ok, best video ever. I follow you daily and have learned so much about gardening, but this one warmed my heart and soul. Benjamin’s talent and willingness to learn in the kitchen is amazing for someone so young. I had never heard of Serviceberry trees until I lived in Columbus Ohio. I lived in Bexley, where the governors mansion is and took a tour of the garden there one year. One of the former governors wives had undertaken a beautiful landscaping project of the grounds and had Serviceberry trees planted. They were beautiful and I made sure to plant one in my own garden when I got the chance. I highly recommend these beautiful trees.

I grew up eating these berries in Russia. They were always so welcome in early summer. I love the look of the tree and have enjoyed it in my yard in Virginia for years. Unfortunately they are not disease resistant on the East Coast. Rust is what affected my tree and the berries are inedible. Thank you for the video! I am glad you are sharing this tree with so many people.

I literally cheered when Benjamin cut the whole way through the apple!! We planted an Autumn Brilliance last year and just love it. I’ve been wondering about using true native plants versus newer better cultivars, are they as beneficial for pollinators? I would hate to have lost some native species because of my desire for the eye candy at our nurseries. Thank you!

Doug Tallamy has done some interesting research on this. In short, the native species is almost always more beneficial to the ecosystem than cultivars. Cultivars can be less attractive or less nourishing to wildlife.

It just brings tears to my eyes to watch you with your son. When he was helping you plant, it reminded me of my mom and me. And then to watch you bake together, lost it! My boys are 27 and 30....enjoy every moment. My mom taught me the love of the earth. She is 83 this year and still wants to garden! So my brother and I made some raised planter boxes for her. The tomatoes are in! Yay.

At the nursery where I used to work, we sold so many Serviceberry trees, single and multi- trunk. It's wonderful understory tree at the edge of the woods here - NW Indiana. We have many that grow natively, too. Here, it's often called Shadblow, because it fruits in June "when the shad (a northern fish) run. Loved watching Benjamin help you bake, adorable.

Aaron is such a guy. “Is it healthy”? I was waiting for him to spit it out! Benjamin is so good at helping with whatever needs to be done. Such fun watching him learn to bake. Great information about service berries. I’ve never heard of them so maybe it’s not a big thing here in the south. At least not in my area. I’d love to grow one!

Shad-blow because they bloom at the same time as the shad run, that is, when the shad swim up the river to spawn. When I lived in eastern NC, shad row was an early spring treat. (I have an amelanchior near the back of my house here in upstate NY- one of the first things I planted - and you're right that it gives so much pleasure year round.)

We just planted two Robin Hill Serviceberry trees. We planted them to feed the birds. I love feeding and watching my birds. Very interesting to learn I can pick some to eat also. I will be looking for the shorter serviceberry now.

I bought 2 service berry bushes a few years ago and have been fighting suckers ever since! BUT, the pleasure I get from watching the Cedar Wax wings and taking lots of pictures has been worth it. You have quite the little helper Laura! Such a smart little guy! Love watching him help you.

We have been feasting on service berries from our tree for a couple of weeks! We pruned it into multi-trunk form and it is a really pretty little tree. Usually, the birds eat them all, but this year we netted the tree. I just took the net off to use elsewhere. I think I will go out and pick some to dry before the birds get them. Wish me luck!

It's a good idea to plant another one for the wildlife since that was a food source for them and few people have these conservation plants like serviceberries in their yards anymore.

Native Amelanchier (we call shadbush) are prized here in New England for all the reasons you mentioned, disease + pest resistance, and their unique 'wiggly' form. I agree: WAY under appreciated tree!! I was told the name shadbush came from the trees blooming when shad (fish) are running.

My son’s name is Benjamin also! But he just turned 21 and watching your Benjamin made me cry cause he even looks like my son did. They grow up so unbelievably fast. I miss that sweet sweet age. Your videos ALWAYS bless me regardless of what you are teaching us. I cancelled my Directv and have nothing but KZfaq and Netflix.... you are definitely one of my FAVORITE channels!!!! 😀❤️

🤣I totally agree I planted 10 serviceberries, 8 bush cherries, 6 blackberries, berried treasure strawberries, and a few boysenberry this spring. I had one bush cherry planted a few years ago and it was loaded this year…. I can’t wait to make all sorts of things in the years to come with the abundance. Thanks for all your inspiration!

Oh my goodness, I absolutely love that you guys made something with berries and eggs grown on your own property! We just bought our first home back in January and I found your channel shortly after. I've always loved flowers and plants, but since my husband is military we have always rented and I could never really do much planting and gardening. Ever since buying our home and finding your channel, you have given me SO MUCH inspiration and wisdom. For the first time I have a beautiful garden in the making. We have deck planters and hanging baskets around our gazebo that are starting to fill out and be glorious. I have a fruit and veggie garden that is thriving and even producing already. We also have a mini orchard with a few fruit trees... And of course a bunch of plans for many garden beds 🤣 It's been so much fun and exciting and we are really enjoying the beauty everything brings. I've also loved teaching my little ones! Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing your experience and knowledge and giving us all inspiration. Because of that we are blessed with joy in our own yards. Now I want a serviceberry and chickens 🤣🙈 how big do serviceberries get when they're mature though? Do they stay about the size in your videos? Thinking I'll plant one for my backyard birds and one for us ❤️

As you were describing them I thought, they sound a lot like Saskatoon berries. Then you mentioned they were called that. Yes, Saskatoon berries are great, to me they have an almond taste to them. Come visit Calgary, Alberta we have a farm named after them.

We had Saskatoon berries growing wild in northern Alberta which I think is a zone 2 or 3. Used to go Saskatoon berry picking all the time. Saskatoon pies are the best!

Saskatoon is a city in Saskatchewan, Canada. We have lots of Saskatoon bushes in Canada. Not sure if they are the same as a service berry though.

I'm excited to learn that they can be a zone 9, a lot of varieties of fruit trees that y'all have up there only go to a 7 or 8 so I have to find different varieties or just go without. So it's cool to know I could have a the same tree, now to find the space.....

Hi Laura! Just loved the recipe for the serviceberries. I planted a serviceberry shrub in my garden in Berlin, Germany but never used the berries so far because there are just not a lot of recipe ideas around. Will try the muffin recipe for sure (hope to find all the other ingredients here :) Being a all city kid, I learned so much out of you videos for my own gardening. Thank you for that! It is really helpful for me that you also refer to the botanical names of all the plants. The German names tend to differ a lot from time to time (serviceberry = Felsenbirne - it doesn’t even have the word “berry” in it…)

I planted a serviceberry last fall, this spring it bloom and had berries, then the farmer across from me nailed it with some Roundup spray on a windy day spraying his field. I'm so sad I had wanted one for years. I guess I will start over and plant it in the backyard this time. They are a beautiful tree, I love it when a flock of cedar waxwing has lunch, in the serviceberry at work, a beautiful sight.

Oh Benjamin-he is just SO precious! And these moments in the kitchen with Mama (sometimes Dad) are the very BEST memories! Thank you for sharing your Mother-in-Law’s recipe! Have company coming in August, I’m going to test this for myself prior (I know I’ll love it I just want to practice!) so I’ll be ready for a company breakfast. SO nice of her and you to share with us all!! No service berries available so I’ll use blueberries. Can’t wait!

I'm one of those people who've never heard of these berries and reading up on them they are very high in Vitamin c!Most fruits have more pectin in them if they are just underipe which is good for jam making !

I watched for ages thinking I’d never heard of this Berry until you mentioned the other names. I grew up with two amelanchier trees in the garden and never knew (or even thought to look up) that they were edible, I feel both dense and amazed! We just loved them for blossom and foliage and that birds loved them. I’ve just sent my mum a message to say she should try and beat the birds to some this year. Amazing thing to learn after all this time - thank you!

Benjamin's reaction to "here have one berry" is the same as mine when I go to Costco and they say "here have one sample." The term "one" can be liberally interpreted. LOL
