Bri, just to let you know, that I think you are an AWESOME mom and such a caring, loving "Goat/Chicken mama". (Art too :) You take such wonderful care of all the animals and they are just SO fortunate to be there with you guys. I agree with one of the other comments, that the chickens are so happy living there, with you all, that they are even laying eggs! :) Bless all of you and hugs to all!

Excellent video! Suggestion: when putting chickens up for the night, put a tarp over cleared ground in front of coop, then in morning just pull the tarp and snow away if not too heavy ... otherwise, an area with the snow shoveled away would make the chickens happier!

Mine are weird some like the snow lol. But I still shovel all over for them and I have 140 plus chickens and shovel a lot I live up north. I do feed and water inside my coops but they are huge coops in case I feel it is too cold to let them out. They have 2 big out buildings they love to hang out in and I make sure they have paths to them.

Ah, looks like you guys had so much fun! We didn't have much snow @ our NC place - rained all night, turning to sleet. It was ICEY instead and then the wind gusted blowing those sharp particles everywhere! Ponies not real happy - our 100 gallon tanks were pretty frozen right at the top - even though I tried the salt/water bottle trick for the first time. I broke ice, everyone happier! When you clean goatie area, drop the straw on the snow for the chickens. They'll venture out fine & will then dig thru the snow on the mulch piles Art turned the other day. Their feet and shanks get too cold in the snow. I had ducks a couple of years ago. They went SWIMMING in this kind of weather!! Their webbed feet & shanks never seemed bothered by this stuff - even this deep freeze. Love your new intro and music! It's great. Your videos have really changed in the last 4 months. Gives me something to aspire to, LOL...

Hi Bri, think you need to put some straw outside the chicken tractor to encourage them to eat and you were right about putting the food closer. Just need the straw, they can't forage much anyway in those conditions so just have to work with it until the worst is over. Hope this helps and love your channel. Claire from the UK

Loved the cat & dog meeting at the corner of the house. So funny! It looked like the ducks were swimming. MY chickens hated snow and wouldn't come out of their coop. I had to put the food in the coop. Also, goats are scary smart about getting into stuff. They will find a way to open that door eventually. You might want to put a lock on it.

Mine won't go anywhere near water or snow LOL If you know snow is coming lay down a tarp...pull it up after the snow and you have ground that they will walk on! Keep the tarp rolled up on top of the chicken coop when not in use and hold it down with bungee cords... keep 4 bricks or rocks close under the coop to put on the corners of the tarp when you lay it out and it won't fly away if it gets windy! And if you get an unexpected snow... you have the tarp to lay down on top of it...saves you from shoveling and wasting hay or straw!
@YAYA-bv7po

You could also move the chickens in or closer to the barn during winter... next to the barn would help keep the wind off them and this would make your chores easier too!! We move our rabbits, chickens, turkey and quail next to the barn during winter...the goats and pigs are inside (small barn) and place them on the south side of the building to keep the north winds off them... I call it huddling the animals lol

Bri you are so cheerful now :) The ducks swam through the snow...how cute. I think Justin used to shovel just a bit then put food on the pallets to give them a raised surface off the snow. I wouldn't waste straw on the snow unless it's already wet/soiled. My chickens won't come out of their barn either o.- can't blame them but they do have room to fly around in there with lots of straw. Loved seeing you guys having fun in the snow :)

Another tip...on super cold days... make your own hand and feet warmers... add about 2 tbs of ice melt(the kind you get to clear your walks and driveways with) add it to a small snack size baggie...put those smaller ones each into the ziplock sandwich sized baggies. When ready to go out, open the snack sized baggie and add 2 tbs water to it, then seal it up and put it in the larger baggie...shake well and it will start warming up instantly! If super cold, you can tuck this in coats and shirts to keep the core body warm too! The kids looked like they had a blast!!

Something that helps get us threw icy winter tasks is hand made hand warmers. Just a little square pillow of rice that fits in our pockets. You can heat them up on the stove or microwave if you use a microwave. Then after you fill a frozen water bucket you can pop your hands into a hot pocket to keep warm.

Yup, chickens aren't crazy about water outside of their water dishes. Ducks & geese love it. Chickens are not as hardy as ducks and geese; they might like to live in the barn during snow season. They get along just fine with goats. A low tunnel might make harvesting the kale easier - but maybe next year. Happy New Year!

I don't even have chickens, but to me it is common sense that the chickens aren't going to stand in the snow. Put them in the barn! or at least have a place where they can eat sheltered from the freezing cold. And, you have like NO hay in their nesting boxes. That's not good! And they still need a dust bin in their coop like Justin had for them.

Stomp the snow down around the front from of the chickshaw out around the bowls. The chickens will walk on the flattened snow after a bit. Also, think about planting a post at the top of that slope then tie a rope to it. Hanging onto the rope will help keep you from slipping.

At night when you close the coop, grab the water container and take it in the house. The next morning you can take it back out, it won't be frozen, and you won't have to play in the cold water.

It is Hot and humid here today, so I watched this snow video to dream of the future months of cold weather...:)

I loved the image on the top of the video (you and birds in snow). I also love how I am listening to the national weather, then your video starts......and I can see the storm they speak of. Dog and cat meeting at the corner!! CUTE--Here's my tip: just do it. Life is a blast. As for being out of breath after walking......time to make 30 minutes of walking a daily habit. Your heart and lungs depend on it.

@2:34.....think of how cold your feet would be in the snow. Put out some hay or straw for them, and or put the food bowls closer to them. It has been below zero for a few days in Colorado, and my geese haven't come out of their crate (at least until yesterday)

I was out of breath b/c I walked up a steep hill carrying 30 lbs. I love to walk and run!

Whew!! :) take a gander (pun intended) at the book, The Book of Geese. You can request it from your library or the interlibrary loan. (I love ILL) IT is so good. May I also recommend the movie, Permaculture chickens? :) xo

Seems you could shovel alot of that snow and store in containers for spring to have water for your gardens/crops come spring and summer.

my father in law had a snowplow blade he attached to the front of his truck so he could clear not just his driveway but his neighbors. They lived in Lookout CA for 25 years, way out in the middle of nowhere in CA above Burney and the Oregon border.

the snow needs to be shoveled and straw put down for the chickens to walk on., they won't walk on the snow. also, the nesting boxes need fresh straw for the hens to lay.
