I am not sure what type squash it is but I think it is great that the little ones are learning how to grow food. This is such a fun learning tool. My first garden I had something round a little green and fussy. My neighbor whom was an experience farmer even though we lived in the city got the biggest kick out of it. It was a canteloupe. I had planted a few watermelon and canteloupe as well. I told it looked like a fussy watermelon but he enlightened me.

I read somewhere that sunflower plants shouldn't be planted next to potato plants, because sunflower takes lots of moist from the ground, and potato also needs a lot of it for its roots to grow big, so they kinda fight over it.

this video reminds me, I need to go prune one of my tomato plants...off to the patio garden :) also love how you feel about digging up the potato plant for your girls interest and learning really is a small sacrifice with big gains for the wee ones, I also think the squash is an acorn. another great video

What a happy garden, and what a lovely schoolyard. That mystery squash looks so much like an acorn squash, but time will tell. I did the same thing with my BOSS - but only planted a single row. There's a few Mammoth and Siberian sunflower seeds mixed in the batch. Mine aren't nearly as tall as yours. May you have zero blight on your tomatoes!

Just saw the session of you helping your Dad harvest corn (6 months ago).... couldn't leave a comment there but please tell him a little mineral spirit on the corn silks keeps the worms away. TY

Feed those grubs to your ducks or chickens! Mine fight over them. Whenever I'm digging in the garden, the ducks pace back & forth hoping I'll throw them some.

That appears to be a yellow acorn squash. They can be yellow or green. I planted both in two different areas at the same time and both color variations are doing very well.

Art, I had a volunteer squash vine come up too. Had a bunch of those little green babies, only one acorn squash reached maturity. Delicious tho!

I had a squash that was a cross of zukinni and butternut squash. It grew like a zukinni and tasted like a butternut squash. 22 squash from 1 plant. rnut squash

Thank goodness you all have not had the rain we have had in Alabama. I was able to tie up some of the Tomatoes, but the rest that were on the ground had issues with slugs and such. Love your lovely Jersey, but still don't see a calf in that oven. Please kick my butt if I am wrong. She maybe coming into heat and the vulva swelling and such, ready for a bull. Cows are easy to AI (artificially inseminate). Worked on the Dairy Farm at MSU (Michigan State University) for some time. We heat checked cows twice a day to wanting to puke! LOL. The cows in heat, we marked and the inseminator came and bred them. I still remember looking through the bull book and seeing all the beautiful bulls who had semen for sale. The probability info was listed for each bull. Probability on breeding was one of my favorite classes. The math was to the extreme and the probability amounted to the chance of this bull giving you the thing you want to improve on in your herd. OK, I am a geek... but it was fasinating and use some of the basic principles to this day on my Nigerian Dwarf Goat herd. OK, OK, getting to GEEK.... Bottom line, have a vet rectal check your cow for pregnancy. I actually learned to do that at MSU-- MOO U. Of course I can't do that to my little goats, and don't get kicked to California, like cows do. Can do a blood test with Biopyrn and know if your cow is pregnant. I do CAE and Johne's with them and blood tests for pregnancy in the spring. Good luck, garden looking great! We are almost done with our first tomatoes, the cucumbers done and the next crop doing well. The rain caused some blight which did my favorite cucumber in, but have another batch going. Love You All!

If she doesn't calf soon we will do a pregnancy check. I have been wondering if she was in heat, so perhaps that is what we were seeing. I hope not! You live, you learn. I LOVE all of the valuable information you share with us, so feel free to geek out on our comments any time!

Yes, learning critters is a life long thing. I still think you made the right decision to buy the older cow. She still has many years of calving and is a sweet pea. Nothing worse then having a witch to contend with... Or being kicked across the field. I still remember that so clearly, even though it was at least 15 years ago... LOL I still feel the pain even now when I think about it... Weird...

Our friends at Commonwealth Seed Growers (commonwealthseeds.com/varieties-offered/) in Virginia have crossed a Butternut squash and Seminole pumpkin to achieve Downy Mildew resistance along with great taste. You might end up with a great variety there if the right traits mix.

ButterKin Squash, yay. Great job on tomatoes. Kids so cute as they learn about the plant and learn to help. Do they have a radih patch so they can grow somthing they can eat quickly? I even enjoy that. Keeps me patient for first harvest of carrots. :-)

At 7:20, that looks like long-leaf plantain. Did y'all plant that on purpose? If that is plantain, it is an amazing healing herb.

Art/Bri, how long did it take for the comfrey to come up from the roots you bought? I just got my comfrey I ordered & have to plant them. I was wondering about how long to expect to see something maybe. Just curious is all. =) Man, I remember when y'all got Flopsy, She's looking so much better. So is Miss Dolly girl. Gosh she was so boney. Great job with the children in the garden Arthur. Absolutely the best way to teach is to do. They remember better this way. Your garden looks great ! Can grow peanuts in your area? That's the one thing I'd like to grow but our summers are too short here in MN. Bri's going to have her hands full canning this fall, but what a blessing when it's all preserved.

I have found that by mulching heavily and preventing any splatter from the soil when it rains I do not get blight on my tomatoes. Here's hoping the blight stays away for you to get a good harvest. Will Bri be doing sauce or juice or canning tomatoes or so many things you can do for tomato storage.

If you have or can borrow a dehydrator, dry some sliced tomatoes too. They make a yummy snack and a great pantry ingredient.

Oh yes a great snack and if I have an abundance I will dry the tomatoes and then grind them to make a powder. Wonderful to add to dishes for added nutrition and flavor. But I will say I make a lot of juice since it is the easiest to make and I can always cook it down later if I need sauce or even paste

for years I never staked my tomatoes, just let them run. I planted them close together and they would support each other. Blight sometimes occurs in wet humid weather, so I understand why you are supporting your plants. It looks good otherwise.

Nice that you are able to do that. We have observed that branches that lay on the ground here go brown in just a few weeks.

Questions: I thought potato plants had to flower and then wither before growing edible potatoes? How do you decide which tomato stem to cut and why trim them?

They do. We were just having some fun with the kids. We are trimming them specifically to prevent blight. Where we live we have very wet summers. It is incredibly hard to grow tomatoes because they tend to get blight. By cutting off all of the branches that are close to the ground we are hoping to lesson the possibility of blight since it is caused by wet humid conditions where the leaves are touching the ground.

DONT TIE TOMAMOS! next time try twisting them around the stick its kinda tricky with out breaking the steam to much but they bend a good bit if your easy on em .. try it out lets us know if it works

We are cutting the bottom stems off to prevent blight. Where we live it is very hard to grow tomatoes because of our wet, humid summers. By cutting off the branches lowest to the ground this aids in the prevention of this tomato killing curse!
