Thank you. Surprisingly, those garlic bulbs grew from our native California clay. My guess is that it is the all sun that grew those.

haha. With the climate and elephant garlic, it is pretty much around all year round either in plant form, bulb form, or somewhere in between. It practically grows itself and great for sharing with friends and folks nearby.

Ah, edibles vs ornamentals...a universal struggle, lol. I happen to be a hybrid of that struggle (dad grew edibles.) As a result, I grow both ;D I am not entirely sure it'll make big bulbs in part shade. It would be a nice experiment. If growing in shade, I would make sure that the soil is nice and rich. Maybe I'd top it off with compost once a month. It will be great to know your results. Maybe also the Mrs. is ok with planting a clove or two in the flower bed. The elephant garlic plant can add some interesting ornamental appeal :) You're welcome and I am glad that you came across this video. :)

Thank you :) The elephant garlic in this video grows very easily. I do not fertilize them. Surprisingly, they grow in my native clay soil just happily. It seems that they like full sun. I have my ground on automatic irrigation. To answer your watering question, I would treat them like many plants-- moist soil but not water logged. Elephant garlic is special and unlike true garlic, I found that they require less care. With garlic, I am finding that they need a lot of nutrients. It helps a lot to feed them. I would experiment with a liquid fertilizer. In fact, this year, I am planting a lot of garlic and have amended the soil with lots of compost. I plant to feed them once more in the spring with an additional topping of compost and will also experiment with fish fertilizer.

They are a sight to see and one of the easiest "garlic" to grow. :)

I live in 10b. In this zone we do not get frost. I do not have a planting video. Elephant garlic are very easy plants to grow. I normally stick the in the ground and just cover the tip with dirt or soil.

Hello, carter spider. I am glad that I am able to reply to comments. Sounds like the caterpillars are hungry. In my experience, I havent had trouble with caterpilars *knock on wood* Generally, caterpillars are bad. If they munch up too many of the leaves, the plant will have less of an ability to harvest the sun's energy. With spraying not working, I would try planting a trap crop. Plant something fast growing like kale and let the caterpillars eat that instead. Also, I would try to look up what caterpillar it is and see if there are other means to rid them.

Booo, horn worms. Last year I discovered how helpful spiders are. I bet the orb weaver had a nice meal.

Elephant garlic is a very tolerant plant. Garlic, however, must have moist, well draining soil, and lots of nutrients in a very sunny location.

Hi, Prakriti. In southern California and many parts of the country, October is generally a good time to start planting garlic. These garlic (while not scientifically classified as garlic) grow pretty big, yeah. There many considerations when planting garlic. To answer your question first: 85 F is generally too warm for garlic. Maybe through this conversation, I will learn more about your climate. I wonder if our seasons differ. October is the tail end of summer. I would then say, plant garlic one month prior to the start of the fall season. If you're growing softneck garlic, there is an additional window at the beginning of spring.

That is correct. It is best to remove the scape (as the flower stalks are called) to allow for larger heads. These are fun to grow; great that you are growing them this year.

Hello. sorry, I am currently not selling elephant garlic. They are getting popular. If you find some at the market, try growing from those. Otherwise look for seed garlic. Garlic growing has become super popular and you should be able to locate some online.

That's very true. They have very very mild garlic flavor when cooked. Best to use them for their crunchy texture. Used fresh, they are great as garlic aioli. I as well enjoy garlic that retains garlic flavor when cooked. My favorite one to grow is the 'Chesnok Red' hardneck garlic.

We can get massive elephant garlic in the UK and there is almost no sun here at all compared to California. It rains on average 33% of days.

That's rough. I had an issue with a plant that is being grown as a hedge. Using a two to three foot long log, one was installed as a post near the plant to draw the dogs' interest. That seemed to work.

Hi. This is the time of the year when elephant garlic are being harvested. You should see them in the market soon. I imagine stores like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's would carry them. Hopefully you live near one of those.
