Ya'll may not know this Mr Hammer but 3 or 4 breakdowns with an old combine is wonderfully good and seems to me to be incident free. This will truly help you to be a better man who fixes things with his hands. Don't ever say something like, "I'm not a good mechanic". Be positive ya'll can figure it out, it is nothing but a stupid machine that will sit and rust away without YOUR magic to have it serve humanity.

A few years ago all we had to cut hay was a Farmall cub with a 5 foot sickle. We have grown to alot bigger operation now(still only about 100 acres) but I have had to make a few new pitman arms and literally have the original in the safe as a template lol. Hold it likes its gold and put it up when you make a new one! Good video!

If you still have the combine mount the coil upright. There is a screw in the centre tower that can leak oil from the coil and it will over heat. Make sure the points are clean and gapped right and maybe test or replace the condenser regularly. The cap and wires need to be clean and free of oil so there is no ignition arcing. Its old reliable ignition and easy to look after. Treat yourself to a 12volt test light from walmart. Its very handy.

My neighbor used to grow 300acres of rough fescue for seed and he baled all the straw in big squares and for a few years I bought his year old straw in the spring and it worked good. Too bad the seed companies sell it for $3/lb but you get $0.61/lb.

We do not have any hay equipment anymore so the neighbor has actually been baking for us. We do not have much broke around here but I would guess it is a similar process. Obviously this combined fescue would be much lower quality. But it will make good maintenance hay for some dry cows through the winter! Thanks for watching!

What was the yield per acre? Love seeing these old machines running. I know it can be a handful to keep them up. I am in the middle of buying my 8820 Titan 2 I sold in 1999. I plan on getting it back into service as a backup machine to my 9600
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t good! That’s about all I know so far. We had some really bad wind storms that knocked down a lot of the heavy stuff and then on top of that we got started late. I’m gonna guess it was about 200lbs per acre but if it wouldn’t have gotten damaged it should have been about 400-500. It was fertilized last fall and the cows have not been on it since.

In your one video that I watched you said that here in Missouri a lot of fescue is raised and that might be a little bit true but as far as the hayfields goes I have mainly seen Timothy Hay for alfalfa fescue mix which is mainly cut for bailing up. The forward most part everywhere I've been in Missouri and which I am from Missouri lived here all my life I drove trucks all around the whole state of Missouri before I retired and I mainly have seen cornfields wheat fields soybean fields Milo fields. And either Timothy Hay or alfalfa fescue mix hey fields. I personally don't know any farmer that raises fescue for harvesting fescue seed only. So I'm just wondering what part of Missouri are you from. And who do you sell your fescue seeds to? If a plumber was interested in raising fescue for seed only who do they contact in order to sell their seeds to? That's the part that you left out in your video when you was talking about raising fescue for a seed and selling it for extra cash.
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 3 жыл бұрын
Northern Mo and south east Mo are where you will find a lot the crop fields you are talking about. But the ozarks portion of Missouri is where you will find mostly fescue growing. Everywhere in the Ozark plateau is a fescue belt. Sure there are crop fields here and there but for the most part it is too hilly and too rocky for planting. And most farmers don’t grow fescue specifically for fescue seed harvesting, but if they are running low on cattle to graze that year, they might set an extra field aside to have cut for seed. The big seed buyer in southwest mo would be Pennington seed and they have dump/weighing stations throughout the state. There is also one towards Bolivar mo I believe as well. Hope that explained it a little better!

@@FarmandHammer thanks for explaining it. Like I said I lived in Missouri all my life I live 120 miles west of St Louis and 85 mi east of Columbia Missouri I live in a small farming community ride along interstate 70 and everyone around here are crop farmers and so are the farmers of the adjoining counties so I couldn't imagine where people grew fescue and harvest the seed so again thank you for explaining where the seed s are harvested and who they are so too.

It is Kentucky 31 Fescue seed. It was sold to a seed company that will clean it then bag it and sell it as lawn seed or back to farmers. Cows wouldn’t hardly touch the seed but goats might, I don’t know for sure.

The gears are extremely worn. You should probably also check the play in your chains. If there is a lot of 'play', then those need to be replaced too. The more worn your chains are, the faster your gears will degrade. ...also, keep the chains lubed. I love that you're working with the old girl.
