Always busy on the farm putting up feed. I have a neighbor that combines 4000acres of high moisture corn and runs it through a big grinder and piles it. Since they started doing that it has worked so well at the feedlot, before they ran their roller mill 24/7 rolling barley. Grain corn here doesn't yield like the mid west but if you avg 150bu/acre you can get a lot of concentrate to feed. There are a few dairies doing earlage but most of the corn grown in southern Alberta is put up as silage.

Thank you for the explanation, I had noticed that using the combine head left a lot of the plant behind as compared to the chopper head. You answered a prior question that you could go back over the field and use for bedding, etc. But, do you normally make a second pass and if not, does that much plant debris make it more difficult to disc the remainder into the soil?
@acresofclayhomestead
@acresofclayhomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Plant debris is good for the soil. Puts organic matter back into the ground and it breaks down some over the winter and then disc.
