I tried your barrel method after watching your presentation earlier this year. I used the big blue shipping drums. Out of both barrels I managed to harvest over 500 lbs of New Brunswick potatoes. I used to plant potatoes in German style raised beds. Sir, your drum method is far superior. All the best and many thanks.

I did a similar planting a few years back using a 55 gallon vinegar drum .Used a key hole saw to cut a series of holes in the side.Put rigid PVC in middle like his drainage pipe.Planted seed taters in the holes and on top. In the fall I just dumped the drum into my compost area then picked up the potatoes. Worked great. I've since moved but saved the barrel. Think I'll cut the barrel in half next time as it will be much easier to handle. I've been working on getting my new garden going the last two springs.(previous owner evidently didn't enjoy gardening so had to start from scratch) I have many more pests here at my new place so it's been a challenge. So far the apple trees.pears,plums and cherry trees are in.A raised bed herb garden,raspberries,gooseberries and blueberries are planted. The annual veggie garden has been fenced in and compost pile has been started. I plan on doing more in the spring now that I've retired.

Gary Carter, Ok I watched this video, compared to how you built the potatoe barrel garden and you stated that you water the tube to get moisture to the potatoes. I hear you, but you should try a wicking blanket made of cotton to wick all that water up around your planter. Instead of letting the water drain at the bottom, drill holes around the barrel 1-2 inches above the bottom and plug the holes at the bottom. Then fill the bottom with a couple of inches of lava rock and sand and line the container with a cotton blanket and start filling with soil with your drain tube in the center. This sets up a reservoir to keep the plant watered, but not over watered. I would try to stuff comfrey leaves down the tube to act as a natural fertlizer. I'll try this on my next grow. Thanks for the video.

Once the weather warms up around the end of May I put them outdoors. I also have two other 17 gallon barrels and this year I got them planted around June 5th. @gardentokitchenwgarrycarte39634 жыл бұрын
Hey Erland, I have not grown or tasted the blue inside type yet but it's on my to-do list. I would also like to try one of the newest potatoes on the market called Pinto Gold developed by University of Main. So far, they are only in the USA. Have you tried the blue ones? how do they taste? thanks for feedback and watching.
@erlandandersen57824 жыл бұрын
@@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte3963 Hi Garry, I haven't tried blue potatoes in the soil yet, but they're absolutely delicious to eat. That is, according to my taste they are, but then again I think all potatoes taste good. From a more objective viewpoint, I think what differs the blue ones from the rest is, in addition to cool colours, they are even richer in nutrients. According to another vid here on youtube they e.g. contain up to 10 times more antioxidants. Which sounds much to me, but he could be right. And they sure are way more expensive! In Norway, where I live, they probably are about ten times as expensive as ordinary potatoes in shops. If they have them at all. Most of the time they don't. And I anyway don't like the idea of having to buy seed potatoes ten times the price as ordinary ones. Monday I wrote one of those specialized/ certified agricultural test and production companies producing something they call «miniknolls» (which I had never heard of before, I'm not on their level..) and a farm concerning prices and stuff. I'm looking forward for their replies. The sort btw is called Blå Kongo («Blue Congo») I have no idea why. I find it unlikely it has its origin in the country of Congo. I doubt it any plants originated in an African climate would turn out a success on my latitudes (approximately same as the northern tip of Quebec). I googled Pinto Gold. Very nice. If it tastes as good as it looks I'm sure it will be a winner. Hope you'll bring some updates if you get hold of some. Long message here. I'm sorry about that, I obviously got a bit passionate.🙄 Potatoes do that. I'm sure you know what I mean. Have a nice day, Garry! 👍

Hi Anita, that sounds like a great idea. If you live in an area where the winter is warmer and comes later, you could try that. That gives me some ideas about planting in August and when it gets too cold bring them inside under my grow lights, using smaller 7-gallon buckets. thanks for the idea.

Can you do a video about how often you water? Do you put the barrel in direct sunlight and do you keep covering the plants with more dirt over time until you get to the top of the barrel? Or just leave the same amount of dirt as you put in at the start? Thank you for the Great videos. Very polite and knowledgeable presentation.Subscribed !

Hi Michael, thanks for the feedback. When the top of barrel gets dry I water the top and pour plenty of water down the pipe. The excess water will drain out since I have plenty of holes in the bottom. The barrel faces S-E so it gets full sun till 3:00 pm, so 8-9 hours of sun per day. I do add more soil as the plant grows up to 3/4 of the barrel. Hope you watch again.

Interesting video. I'm wondering what kind of medium you are growing your potatoes in? Thanks for posting.

Hey Captain Ron, I usually draw earth from my raised beds. they have very loose soil that has been amended with manure, compost and the previous miracle grow from my last year's flowers which contain lots of peat moss and perlite. Just make sure the soil is loose and not heavy compacted soil. Potatoes like lots of moisture, but not wet conditions. If your garden soil is medium to heavy use perlite to create drainage. thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing the video. Just asking besides the horse manure what other fertilizer are you using?

Hi Virginia, I add a cup of Dolomitic Lime www.lowes.ca/product/plant-food/cil-lime-all-purpose-food-0-0-0-835280 to lower the ph level of the soil because taters don't like acidic soil. thanks for watching Virginia.

What do you feet the potatoes? I mean, any plant food? Anything other than water? How much sun do they get? I have 4 of those blue containers which I was planning to convert into raised flower beds but I like the idea of getting food for the winter. I think my grow zone is 6A. Connecticut, US. Thank you and what a great and inspiring video. Keep posting them, very helpful.

Hi Backyard Warrior, Usually potatoes don't need too much fertilizer, however, I do put some bone meal and homemade compost mixed into the soil before I place the seed potatoes into the soil. Sounds like you have a great idea with your containers. We all love potatoes! thanks for watching.

Stomping Tom Connors sung it best, BUD THE SPUD. Us Canadians love potatoes like Americans like grits! I like growing purple potatoes in a 55 gallon barrel, they have a sweeter taste. 12" of quality soil , plant the seed potato, as they grow keep adding soil to keep the sprouts covered to within 3" - 4" of their tops. Keep adding 3 in 1 soil mixture to the top of the barrel as they grow , come fall lay a tarp on the ground and push the barrel over and collect the potatoes. I place the dirt into 5 gallon pails with lids so the dirt can be reused next year. 👍 👍 🇨🇦

Great idea James, thanks for the feedback and I agree with Stomping Tom Connors Bud The Spud. A Canadian icon that could stomp a hole through 3/4" plywood! :) thanks for watching. BTW, the other day I purchased 5 lbs of Red Yukon taters. The are red outside and yellow interior like the Yukon Gold. The exterior is smooth. Apparently they come from Germany (called potatoes of the world - Loblaws) really great tasting. Have you ever hear of these before in Canada?

super interesting. I love the facts and the enthusiasm. I didn't understand about the process of adding new soil on top. When do you add it and how much? You don't cover the greenery, I take it?
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte39635 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin, yes, I do cover the greenery with new soil as it grows and I continue to add soil to a depth of about 16". Potatoes grow upwards so I try to encourage new growth along the stem. When I start, the soil is about 6-8" deep and 16-18" when finished. thanks for watching. What part of the world do you garden from?

well done on your red potatoes! I'm new to gardening, and was wondering how you know your crop is ready to harvest? and how to store potatoes and for how long? can you or your followers, give me some advice please!!
@gardentokitchenwgarrycarte39635 жыл бұрын
Good questions, Once the tops of the potato plants, will go brown and wilt let them dry for about a week. Then harvest, but don't wash them. Let them dry in a shaded area for a few days and most of the earth will shake off. Store them in a cool dark area and they should last until Dec 31st. After that, they will develop sprouts and go a bit soft. Just break off the sprouts and they are still usable. I remember my father having a large potato bin in the basement and we were tasked with breaking off the sprouts in Jan, Feb March. BTW, don't put potatoes in the refrigerator because they don't keep well. thanks for watching. What part of the world do you garden from?

Take a look at my potatoes in 7-gallon barrels. I photographed them this morning. These pots were planted May 4th and should be ready to harvest any time. drive.google.com/file/d/1jLVijY0oxuLk9TiQhg3UbTiA7lop0WuO/view?usp=sharing
