Toxins from the plastic leaches into the potatoes. I have BPA free buckets, but I still refuse to grow food in it. Wood crates are best because they are more porous and can respirate gases. Make sure the wood is untreated, i.e., no formaldehyde’s or any other added chemical.

I notice that you plant the whole potato. Down here in Texas we cut the potato into pieces each piece having an eye. Planting time is during the new moon of February. This was an excellent video. Live long and prosper.

Did you know you can grow the pieces you cut off simply plant it with the leafs exposed and water it immediately. Roots will start growing within a day. In a week you will have a tiny potato plant. No need to leave the tuber with the chits. Less risk of dieases.

Gary you just cut off the part you want and have growing? Why would you want to do that? Vs cut the potato separate the vines and plant them separately growing more plants? Just put those deeper in the dirt and plant the sorter ones closer to the top. The roots will spread out faster. I'm going to try your barrel potato techneque this spring tho.

My bigger problem is how to get potatoes i bought localy to germinate/make shoots. The potatoes is shipped from main Island of philippines were they are grown apparantly in cooler areas. Im from south africa and dont buy the too hot climate theory. Acid soil can be altered. I do agree with too high rainfall. We have basicly 6mnths wet and dry season.

What is the reason for the tube?

I'm so glad I came across this method of growing, I have a problem with wild hogs wiping out my entire gardening efforts in a single night here in Texas. I have a huge surplus of used cattle syrup tubs and I think this will provide a protective growing vessel for my spuds.

How long should we wait before checking if the potatoes are big enough to harvest? I am the type of person who would be sneaking my finger down to check how big they are :)

So I ordered seed potatoes 4 each of these varieties:Green Mountain,Bridget,Chieftain and German Butterball. The problem is they arrived yesterday and I think it's too cold to put them outside. They haven't started sprouting and I don't know where to store them. I am lost and don't know what to do. I'm in Bowmanville, Ontario. I've actually got 4 potato planter grow bags for when they are ready. I just don't know what to do now.
