it can't hurt if it freezes or snows overnight, that's when they are the tastiest. in the Netherlands we let the frost get over it before we start harvesting. the freezing of the plant cells stops the growth, but the conversion into sugar and vitamins still continues, so that the sprouts only become tastier and contain more vitamins.
@HomeInTheSticks2 жыл бұрын

Ok, now that I have calmed down (read previous comment), this is a brilliant video Dan, up there with the "Best of the Best." We use a Foodsaver too and we've learned not to blanch leafy vegatables such as Brussels and cabbage. Even though it may mean shortening the storage life, the water absorbed by the blanching process can cause chaos with the Foodsaver and so it's worth sealing them in as drier state as possible I'm just getting my "Shine" back on, but if you bloody tell me one more time how easy it can be to grow... ah, leave it Willie :-)
@HomeInTheSticks6 жыл бұрын
Lol, dang Mr William hehe 😂 I haven't blanches my Brussels in years, they just taste better to me without blanching them and I've had pretty good success with vacuum sealing them and popping them in the deep freeze, ate some awhile back from 2015, tasted like I just pulled them off the stem!! Thanks for watching my friend!! Dan

I tried growing Brussel Sprouts several years ago, when I had a community garden plot where we lived last, but never got anything. We have a short growing season in Utah and they take a long time to mature. I think I just started them too late. Since I'm expanding my garden this year at our home, I'll finally have room to try these again. I plan to start them indoors soon. I just need to check days to maturity and my last frost dates to see when I can get started. My son and I love these and I would love to have a stash of them in the freezer instead of buying them. Oh, and thank you for the idea of using the salad spinner. I need one of those! I freeze all kinds of things that are wet from washing, so this would save me from freezing them on trays first and then bagging them.

That is something that you actually got them to produce heads in your climate. They need cold weather to make those tight heads. They are real cold hardy. I like them but my wife doesn't. Lightly steamed and then some butter and salt is how i like them.

1-2-3... Hmmmm, easy eh? Not so easy my friend. Grrr. Do you know how hard it is for some people to grow Brussels? ...4-5-6... I sent a text to my friend whilst I was watching this saying "If he says EASY one more time I'm gonna #*@@&!* him! At that point you used the word "Easy" one more time! Hmmm. 7-8-9... (Keep counting Willie, don't him get your dander up). ARGGGHH! He got my flippin' dander up! I've been growing stuff for many years but Brussels have never worked for me, not even a little. I am to Brussels what A Little Dirt Never Hurt is to singing. LAAAWWD HAVE MERCY AGAIN! .... 10... Out of 10 my friend, well done on the crop, I hope you enjoy them, I only wish they would allow produce across the border as I would like to be the friend that received your extras. For now I'll spend $6.59 per kilo at the supermarket as that's the only place I can find them. Top job mate :-)
