It's always seemed to me like this song is mocking the 90s alt scene while simultaneously acknowledging it is a part of it. Like the protagonist of our song sort of buys into the culture, but the buy-in makes him miserable. The line, ''I'm so hot...cuz I'm in hell'' showcases this ambivalence nicely. ''The agony and the irony is killing me...'' reminds me of that Simpsons line where a teen asks his friend, ''Are you being sarcastic, dude?" and he replies, ''I don't even know anymore.'' And I think it's still relevant, especially if you're looking back on the 90s as an adult who was a teen... shit... 20 years ago... shit.
