This took guts. One of the key arguments being used in mainstream media is that the Israeli strategy and tactics are being done out of “necessity”, that there is no other way. We need more veterans and experts in counterinsurgency to articulate how they should be conducting themselves based on the lessons learned from Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. This must include not only effective counterinsurgency strategies, but also addressing underlying credible political grievances and a peace process. I grew up being taught to support Israel. Now I just listen to what they say and watch what they do. “Radicalization is always preceded by oppression”.

The Israeli/Palestinian context is very different from counterinsurgency in Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. I think Israeli Jews increasingly believe (with good reason) that their Palestinian neighbors will never tolerate the existence of a Jewish state. Israelis generally believe they've done all they could to address legitimate grievances and make peace offers, only to have the gestures returned by higher demands in negotiations or surges in violence.

@@danarnold2588with respect you sound just like the Brits describing the Irish, and like the Brits you conveniently left out the historical context, including illegal occupations, oppression, internment, hunger, dehumanization, war crimes etc etc. Ireland stands with the Palestinians because they believe they have endured a shared struggle. The Provisional IRA ran a bombing campaign on mainland England and almost assassinated PM Thatcher, but the Brits didn’t retaliate by indiscriminately bombing Belfast or Dublin in hopes of taking out some IRA Volunteers who lived and operated amongst the population. I appreciate the reply, but we will have to agree to disagree on this one. I imagIne we disagree on root causes but probably agree on some solutions. Have a good one.

Hey Guys, I am an Israeli and I want to clear a few things up. You seem to be mixing up the ultra-orthodox with the religious right. The ultra-orthodox do not have any strong feelings about the conflict. They are not very patriotic and do not serve in the military. They are like the Amish in the US.On the other hand, the religious right (where I come from), AKA settlers, are very much over-represented in the military, especially in combat roles and SF. They do have a desire to take more land which is a combination of strategic and religious ideology. Very few Israelis, even on the far right are pushing to annex parts of Gaza but the ones who are, believe that it is the best way to solidify a win in this war. There is still a very real chance that Hamas end this war and claim victory but that would be much harder to convince the people of Gaza if they are missing a giant chunk of their land so there is some logic in that idea.

Thanks for this insight man! Didn't understand why some soldiers were recording videos of them doing dumb shit or mocking given the international pressure and how bad of a look it is internationally for Israel (cause they need all the good PR they can get), as well as the strategic angle for grabbing more land; makes much more sense now.

@@nycrsny3406 Most Israelis do not really care what people think about them outside of Israel. When I moved from Israel to the US I was surprised anybody knew about the conflict. Personally, I don't like those videos but after what the US did in Abu Ghraib I don't think they should condition their support on perfect behavior from Israeli soldiers. When I was serving in the military there was pressure to be "professional" and my unit would never allow videos but I think some reserve units don't have much discipline and after 5 months in Gaza people start losing it.

Such a great episode! Especially with Andy's insight and experiences in operations of the same kind as those in Gaza. Honestly thought Biden's "red line" statement about Rafah was him back-stepping cause he was feeling the pressure from electors, but I hadn't thought about the mentality and near non-existant rules of engagement by Israeli forces on the ground being this fucked. Looks like the Rafah operations have the potential to be orders of magnitude more catastrophic.

Love Andy’s insight and De’s ‘normal’ perspective and callouts in this, especially the ‘no dog in the fight’ - I think a position held by most atm. My take is that Israel has losts its way with this, its abusing its position too much around geopolitics sympathies and historical events and it looks like the Israeli people are starting to try and voice an opinion on this. IMHO Nethenyahou has almost boxed himself into a corner with this, and I am not sure what he thinks the exit strategy is and what ‘good’ looks like now. Don’t forget Ukraine guys, here in Blighty the focus in the media is starting to shift as commentray keeps highlighting that the ‘borrowers’ are in trouble …...

Milburn fails to identify why John Spencer is wrong other than saying that he is wrong. Also, I would like to remind everyone that in September of 2015 during the battle for Kunduz, US SF team vectored an AC-130 gunship to fire at a target that turned out to be Médecins Sans Frontières hospital. Also, the last US act in Afghanistan was to carry out a drone strike against Afghan civilians who had nothing to do with the ISIS attacks against North KAIA. So, we should not be throwing bricks in the glasshouse and stop being sanctimonious self-righteous @ssholes. Finally, it is relevant to point out that Abraham Wyner, who is the Professor of Statistics and Data Science at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, demonstrated that the Gazan Health Ministry (i.e. HAMAS) -provided civilian death numbers are internally inconsistent and should not be referenced by any serious researchers and commenters.

Sad fact, over 27 Americans have been killed in Israeli Occupation operations... Not killed by Israeli forces but because Palestinian Resistance fighters have blown up or killed them in combat during Israeli incursions.. After October 7th, over 1,000 American Israelis were called back to fight for "their" government... That means, they were born in America, practiced Judaism, yet went to Israel to claim to be Israeli, and that means returning to fight, whether you understand international law or not, makes them criminals because you cannot join a foreign military as an American... No country and no military in the world has ever faced the challenge that Israelis do right now. And no military would perform better with less civilian casualties in these conditions on the ground. In all conflicts, international community steps in to absorb refugees but with Palestinians, the UN and all countries support using Palestinian civilians as weapons against Israel. In Iraq, Syria, Yemen conflicts millions of refugees were allowed to flee combat zones. When Russia invaded Ukraine the international community absorbed 5 million Ukrainian refugees. Instead of forcing Arab world and other countries to open borders to Palestinian civilians to minimize casualties, no one is pushing for that. UN is against it while they facilitate refugees in all other conflicts. The use of civilians as a weapon against Israelis operating to defeat Hamas is truly unprecedented in modern history. Everyone just criticizes Israeli actions while Hamas enjoys violating all laws of armed conflict, receives billions in aid from foreign governments and Israelis are told to lose a war which will allow Hamas to reconstitute, rebuild and continue their next round in jihad.

There seems to be a readiness of people in the West to accept any story without knowing the facts as long as Jews or Israel are portrayed as especially evil. Often Jews are portrayed as whatever any given group hates the most. For the left is colonialists and genociders while for the right it is globalists.
