Күн бұрын

Almost exactly one year ago, we uploaded a video of how we were learning German while we were still living in the USA. We hadn't moved yet to Germany, can you believe it? So now we are updating you, one year later, on how we are learning German for free now that we are living here. But the part we know you're going to love the most is the interview we do with our son, Grayson! He has a real talent for learning German, so he wanted to join us for this video to show off his German skills! He's so cute in this video, I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed filming it with him.

It’s probably also school, talking with many people and being put into situations where you have to speak their language. As adults, a lot of people speak English so if you don’t know sth, you’ll just quickly switch to English to explain. As kids, you don’t usually have that option. Might not be a big difference, but it adds up. But especially the socializing; talking helps the most when learning :D

Grayson gets a huge compliment from me, too! Klingt spitze! And yes, total immersion. It feels like it’s so slow and then one day you suddenly realise how much you can say and understand. Just don’t worry about mistakes when speaking. When writing in German, that’s the time to make sure everything is perfect, but people make mistakes even in their mother tongue, and people also say, no, it’s like this or that in every language. The point is to get your mouth and brain expressing what you want to say, quickly and then you can build on that.

Hi Lauren!! That’s so true, I make mistakes in English, too. Grammar can be soooo complicated! How long did it take before you were fluent here?
@LaureninGermany
@LaureninGermany 2 жыл бұрын
Longer than it should have because a lot of people spoke English to me and I let them. So I honestly cannot say. But my biggest tip is to watch German TV and films (not dubbed from English because they have to speak too fast). A great start is the most brilliant 4-parter (it’s a film, actually) about Ludwig II and Neuschwanstein, which you can find here on KZfaq, subtitled in English, on a channel called German Period Dramas. (I’ll check the channel and edit if it’s wrong)

Grayson’s German has improved hugely! Er spricht so gut wie akzentfrei. Ich würde nicht ohne weiteres erkennen, das seine Muttersprache nicht Deutsch ist. In einem Jahr spricht er so gut Deutsch wie Englisch. The use of English words and phrases („Anglizismen“) is a hot-button issue in Germany. Some can’t use enough of them while speaking, others feel it’s much too much.

The Indian languages are really bad in this aspect. No one speaks a pristine form of Hindi or any other Indian language. The main reason I understand what my parents say is because they alway mix their language with English. Even worse, if you try to speak pristine Hindi (or the regional language) the locals will think you are a pompous dork.

Wow, Grayson totally blew me away. Again. He even adopted something of a Bavarian "Klangbild" in German. This is not a dialect. Literally translated, a "sound-picture". It is neither an accent nor a dialect, because his German was perfect high German (Hochdeutsch). But the cadence, the slight difference in where the focus of inflections are placed is slightly, just a teensy slightly bit different from for example the Klangbild here in Hamburg, even when someone here speaks Hochdeutsch as well. It is sooo fascinating for me to see how he has developed within such a short time. BTW: not that this is bad, not in the slightest bit. It is just barely noticeable if you listen very very closely and you have lived in different regions of Germany for some time. It is only fascinating how he has picked this up. Amazing! Nope, the slightly elongated 'joooaaa' is pretty universal in German colloquial speech. While it might be slightly more used in the south, it will not be a 'betraying' sign of your origin. 😀 BTW: Sara, that "Weißwurst" was almost a perfect Bavarian pronunciation of it. You definitely picked up on that as well. 😀👍 Just for Kevin's dad jokes: Grayson is 10 now, so legally, under your direct supervision he can try a Weißbier at 14, if he wants to. He can legally buy and consume it at 16 himself, without adult supervision. At 18 anything goes. He has picked up the German humor already. He picked up on the literal question of travel in the past year (in 2022) and threw the answer back at ya. Nice! Good going, Grayson! 🤣 There's the joke that there are more clubs in Germany than there are German citizens. While not technically true, Germans absolutely looooove their Vereine / clubs. So becoming a member of a club is probably one of the easiest ways (except meeting other parents at the playground when your kids are there) to meet up and make friendships with Germans. Good for you that you decided to pick up on that tip! Total immersion: perfect! That is the first thing you should try. Not live in your own bubble, but expand it as far as possible. BTW: is the German grandma the one Sara commented on in one of her earliest videos after you arrived here that she had this beautiful garden? It would be sooo great to hear that talking with her about some horticulture could have opened up a friendly contact. You guys will do absolutely fine, and your advances are definitely highly noticeable. Keep it up, you will succeed, I am certain.

In case you want to improve your spoken German, there is a scheme called „Sprach-Tandem“ in Germany. You advertise (Facebook, black board in a store or a school) for a tandem and find a partner. You meet or call once a week and she/he speaks English to you and you answer in German. If the other person makes a mistake it is corrected by the native speaker. Win-win.

On a different subject, you are really close to Italy. A drive from your location to Venice (through Austria) is about 5 hours. A little less than to Burg Eltz. Could be a great idea for a long weekend. And it's really cheap right now. The carnival of Venice is from Feb 12, 2022 - Tue, Mar 1, 2022. I think the kids would love it, and if I am not mistaken there is a school holiday in Bavaria during that period. (28 Feb 2022 - 4 Mar 2022)

Hey guys, I did enjoy your video as always, you had some good points there. It is clear that Grayson has a knack for languages, not only learning the grammar and words but also the intonation, dialect and so on, that's great to see. Talent and hard work are definitely paying off but as you already said, so does the complete immersion in the culture. I think you can learn a great deal from "the outside" but will only truly develop language skills similar to a native if you are surrounded by it. I had the biggest learning effects when I spent two weeks on my own in Ireland. A very short time but speaking and hearing English all the time and having to communicate to get by is helping so much. And you quickly realize it's okay if it's not perfect as long as you speak at all :D, something schools should apply too... I remember being super afraid of speaking in class as I could not speak a single word without being corrected or overly criticized. I also have some questions/ topics for your next videos maybe?: - Having lived in Sveden and France, what are the main differences to living in Germany? - How did you learn French? Was the process of learning the language and immersing into the culture easier or harder than with German? - Are the kids taking English classes for natives outside of school? How are their English teachers at school dealing with them? - How are people in your everyday life (grocery store, doctors and so on) reacting to you? Are they patient or did you face any discriminatory behaviour?

Your german is amazing and the kids sound almost native and can already switch easily which will help them in their future, even with learning new languages. You went all in and it shows in amazing progress. You definitely hear the rural bavarian influences in the childrens’ german and yours too which really is an interesting aspect of languages. I love the way the accents sneak in, it keeps language unique and diverse within the language. I just love the variety in german and even within the region there are unique aspects to every village and family and person that culminates in a unique speaking pattern for everyone. Thank you for sharing another great video. So much fun to see how far you've all come in learning German - especially you Sara! Grayson sounds like he was born into the language. He also seems like the engineer, like Dad. I'd get along with Grayson. I'm trying to learn some German for my trip this summer and have several apps. Some of which I've paid for. I also view Easy German and will check out DW. It's so easy to find resources and apps to learn a language now that it's become stressful to figure out which one is best! Also what is the area @20:49? So beautiful!

A great video! Und Grayson, Dein Deutsch ist schon sehr, sehr gut! Weiter so! When I was learning English, music helped me a lot! I wanted to be able to sing songs I liked and I wanted to know what the songs were expressing, saying. So I looked up the lyrics, translated them or searched for a translation and I listened to the song until I could sing it. Of course this is easier with English songs - simply because there are like uncountable songs of every genre out there. But if you search a bit I'm sure you can find German songs you like, too. Songs are a great way to learn how to "play" with a language.

I’ve read some of the comments before he started speaking German so I was “prepared” for some good German, but damn it still blew me away how much of a German he sounds! If I didn’t know he was American, I would definitely think he’s German and always has been. :0

Ein großer Applaus !. Ich glaube, wenn ihr euch dieses Video in einem Jahr anseht, werdet ihr kichern und euch bewusst werden, wie weit ihr gekommen seid. I cannot remember much of the first year here in Vienna, ( it was a whirlwind year, including a wedding) but I do know that when I went back to the states 18 months later and tried my German on my uncle, from Berlin), he was most impressed 🙂 but he also said I had the local accent. 😀 You know you've arrived when German is in your dreams. Ask your children if they have dreams in German.

Wow guys, amazing job! I love your approach to your live in Germany and and how you embrace all of it! 😍 your German has come on so well! And apparently, Kevin’s Swedish had come on really well too - the “Ja” still sounds very Swedish 🤪 we still understand, but that is a different “Ja” compared to our Bavarian “Ja”! I absolutely love to follow your story so all the best for all of you and keep it up 😘

Great job Grayson! The immersion is the reason why we make a difference between learning Deutsch als Zweitsprache (for foreigners living in a German speaking country) vs. Deutsch als Fremdsprache (for foreigners living in a different country) - there are actually different strategies and methods being used for each!

You are all making such amazing progress! Grayson's German is really impressive, but your German is quickly improving too, Sara! That really is a great achievement considering you are self-employed and therefore not as surrounded by German as the others. Please don't apologise or feel bad for stumbling over German grammar - we can understand what you're saying perfectly fine, and the grammar will come to you with time :)

You guys are so sweet and so natural. I watched a couple of your youtube videos and love to listen and how you all get acquainted with the german life and language. I used to live in the US - moved there with 35 and back to Germany with 50 - and know exactly what you are talking about, just the other way around. I wish you all the best and hope you always have wonderful people around you. Oh, btw, I also live in Bavaria - very close to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Such good vibes from you lot :-) Go Grayson, Go! If he likes all things apple, he should try Apfelküchle - slices of apple fried in a batter and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Delicious! And Kevin's accent/inflection is so so Swedish - he tends to stress the end of his words eg. SomMER, WeißBIER whereas a Geman will stress the front SOMmer, WEIẞbier. With lots of listening that will right itself though.

Hey there, I just discovered your channel and love it. Grayson -wow! His pronunciation is great! I am German and used to have a similar life moving to New York (long Island) when I was 12-17 years old. Now I am 39 and back to Germany. I guess I follow your channel because I still cherish the time back in the U. S. the good and the not so good, so I can still surprisingly relate to a lot you are saying. Well done! Your family is great, open minded and overall fun to watch. My best regards to you😘 When I was about Graysons age (a little older) it took me one year to be fluent in English, Kids learn so quick, however, German is harder to learn and you are doing wonderful!

this is so interesting to me seeing the difference that location makes within germany. i live in berlin and i meet a lot of people from all over the world here. and most of them came to germany like 4 or 5 years ago and have not started learning german yet. of course they know a few basic sentences, but they get along with only using english so they dont see a reason for it. for most the first time they want to learn it is if they get into a relationship with a german person and want to be able to talk to their parents. or if it is required for a job. my english speaking has improved significantly since i moved to berlin 10 years ago.
