I asked President Obama if he's DEPRESSED!?

Hasan Minhaj asks President Obama what we’re all wondering: does he get depressed? When it’s 2 AM, and POTUS is in bed, does he doom-scroll on his phone? Hasan needs to hear from the most hopeful president in American history and have an entertaining but honest conversation about this generation’s hopelessness.

Definitely charismatic, intelligent and well spoken person. As a president he looked the part and played a good front man. But America didn't do well in his time as the president. I completely agree with you. I wish President Obama could run for a third term, with Michelle as his running mate. Of course, it's going to take some serious dedication and work to undo all of the harm Trump has done to America. Sure, Joe Biden has accomplished a lot to counter Trump's damage, but IMO, it will take a politician like Obama to REALLY turn things around. Then again, I don't know HOW any future president can eradicate the idiotic MAGA minions who have poisoned our country's politics.

@@TiggerToo27 Helping the country past MAGA is a hard puzzle but it's not, perhaps, unsolvable. I think the first question to ask is why these people are like this. Where do they come from and how have they got here? I won't try a comprehensive answer because I don't know enough. The answer is also certainly different for different people. It might be desperation for some, a rightwing identity for others or a liking for Trump's style. There could be cynicism involved, or fear, insecurity, anger, fatalism, superficiality, hatred, confusion, gullibility, peer pressure, you name it. It could even be calm reasoned argument from fundamentally different principles. People of another mind are not automatically idiots. Try your best to find out what motivations lead people into MAGA. Then ask, "What would it take to help them question their allegiance? Are their minds free, capable of changing in the face of reason? Or are they wedded to their view? Do they centre their very identity around it? If so, a change of mind will be a scary prospect, one they will only consider in the presence of someone they fully trust. It's an open-heart operation, a moment of great vulnerability. If they don't trust you enough because you haven't put in the work to earn it, you're not in a position to change their minds. It may be that they trust only one or two people on Earth enough to be that vulnerable with them. If you want them to trust you, consider why they might not. Do they just hate anyone without a MAGA hat or do they have better reasons? Do you insult or otherwise hurt them? Do you talk down to them? Do you fake it with them? Are you, perhaps, simply a stranger? If you want their trust, try to genuinely love them. There is reason to. You may not find them attractive but they are as mortal and fragile as all of us.

Brah, thanks for highlighting this segment.. this very exact moment is what lead me to the comment section. Hasan reminds me so much of an old friend I had in high school btw, and it’s sad that I was always so lousy with keeping friends because someone put in my head very early on that friendships come and go and at most time even hurt you. Therefore I always viewed friendships and love relationships too as toxic and that the only thing that mattered in life was the distance I travel in success. Yes, there have been some great successes in my life so far, and I’m 30 now, but what I learned by now is that successes come and go. When President Barack Obama mentioned his dream about grabbing a coffee outside and nobody recognized him and the beauty of peace that came with that.. that’s what I desperately seek for myself. Of course I’m no President Barack Obama, but my path has sure stressed me out in such ways that lead me to feel that I don’t have a life of my own. People like Hasan remind us of who we are, friendships remind us of who we’re supposed to be. I wish I had a friend like Hasan.. and maybe I still do, I just haven’t spoken to him for quite some time.

Obama and Biden bombed more countries during their term than any other sitting U.S. President since FDR during World War Two. "Looking back at President Obama’s legacy, the Council on Foreign Relation’s Micah Zenko added up the defense department’s data on airstrikes and made a startling revelation: in 2016 alone, the Obama administration dropped at least 26,171 bombs. This means that every day last year, the US military blasted combatants or civilians overseas with 72 bombs; that’s three bombs every hour, 24 hours a day."

Immigrant to the US here. Hasan, I'm so proud of you. You've worked your ass off, have valued integrity over and over, have held people accountable, and have handedly slapped in the face this notion that black and brown immigrants and their families should bow in thanks for a chance at the American dream and be shy about speaking out against injustice or complaining about the government of the country they are now citizens of. I was already active and confident, but you gave me an example of an actually unapologetic person in that arena. This is big and you did it your own way to get there. No one is saying us immigrants should keep our mouths shut. The opposite. What we are saying is we're one of the last groups of people in this country that aren't so down on it 24/7. You say you're an immigrant, which country did you come from? You would know that the US is truly the promised land. The unfettered freedoms, optimistic outlook, culture of excellence, humility, personal independence, and overall shot at re-inventing yourself are why this country is the greatest. As Reagan once said, the US is the last hope of the world. If we lose freedom and prosperity here, there's no where else to turn to. We have a responsibility to continue the American Experiment. And as an immigrant, I could not be more grateful to have the opportunity to do this on a daily basis.

I totally get what you are saying. BUT, I think that Biden gets a really bad rap, especially from younger people, simply because he is in his golden years and he has a serious speech impediment (that is exacerbated by his age). Biden is not suffering from dementia, he is still sharp and there is a lot to be said for experience and knowledge that someone older who has been in the Senate for many years, was Vice President and handled foreign affairs, and now President and is handling everything he was left with (and it was a steaming pile of 💩) pretty damn well - he is judged really harshly. Yes, I wish he was younger, too. Yes, I wish he spoke more eloquently and didn't mess up his words sometimes or mumble them but he gets things done ( when he isn't blocked by Congress). He has gotten a lot of good things done domestically, some things it will take time to see the effects of still, but they got done and he has done amazing work in strengthening our foreign position with our Ally's (something Trump had nearly, completely destroyed) he all but saved NATO and made it stronger than ever. He is highly respected by our foreign Ally Leader's and even most of our Enemy's Leader's. (Putin talks big but he fears Biden - he never feared Trump because he controlled him, owned him and still does). So am I 100% happy with Biden, of course not - but there has never been a President I have been 100% happy with and I am a 56yr old lifetime Democrat. If it's a choice between Biden re-elected and anyone the Republicans have put forth - I am absolutely voting for Biden. The entire Republican Party has gone off a cliff - they have never done anything for the American People (other than the wealthiest 1% and themselves), they are actually in the business of hurting the American People, destroying the Constitution and trying to force twisted Christian Fundamentalist "values" on the entire Nation and entwining it with Government and even those who are still supposedly "normal' Republicans are all in on the Fascist leaning policy of the current Republican Party that is basically controlled by Trump and it's simply about power, corruption and money - there is no policy whatsoever, other than to crush and control the People. And this Third Party that's being talked about is funded by the same billionaires that back the Christian Fundamentalist Groups and the corrupt Supreme Court Justices and will only take votes away from Democrats, increasing the chance that Trump (or whoever the Republican Nominee ends up being, and that individual and Republican House and Senate Politician's would get elected by default - which would be catastrophic to America), because no Third Party nominee(s) for any office has any chance of winning. They will only take votes from Democrats. It's just another Republican backed ploy to try to win. I really wish the American population was more intelligent, but that's not going to happen and a third of the population is not only completely lacking in intelligence they are absolutely insane, as well. We can only hope that enough of the other two-thirds actually vote and that they vote Blue, or we are screwed as a Country.

i'm not sure what you mean by "bright," but the majority of people i speak to feel strong disenchantment with our political state at this time. some are angry, i feel helpless at times and amused at times when i read the news. i've also been humiliated in front of the world since 2016. most of us never saw this coming. i remember i snuck away from work that night and watched the votes come in in realtime, feeling an increasing sense of dread and confusion and betrayal. i watched the rest of the world discuss us like a weird mole they'd found on their leg in the shower. part of me is relieved france is finally getting some attention here so i can check the news and see something different - though my heart breaks for their frustration. if anybody can empathize with them it's us. i also empathized when the uk had all that crap happen in parliament. i was like hey welcome to the club, all we have are stale cheez-its and lukewarm kool-aid. anyway, we take it day by day.

Keep in mind, Obama's emotional restraint most likely came from knowledge of him being the first African-American president. The stereotype of the "Angry Black Man" is incredibly pervasive, and if he had showed any evidence of even possibly being related to that stereotype, he could have lost everything. I'd argue that when Obama did show genuine emotion, it was productive and subtle (crying for the kids at Sandy Hook, singing Amazing Grace after the shootings in Charleston, dancing with his wife with love in his eyes.) I couldn't ask for anything more than that 🤷‍♂

Hmmmm. These are wise words. Words of someone who understands that leaders must have guardrails. These are the words of someone epitomizing emotional intelligence. Hmmmm. You remind me of someone who might support a culture of leadership; take responsibility, be glad there's direction, and know we only do it together.

I was going to say, it wasn't until much later in his Presidency he gradually got more emotional. Also, the thing with Trump's "emotional honesty" is that its still more performative than genuine.

I dont wanna be a downer or so. Obama is an intelligent and charismatic guy. Obviously a million times better than Trump. But I cant and wont ever forgive him for being against Bernie Sanders in 2016 and 2020 and instead supporting the DNC favourite each time (Hillary in '16 and Biden in '20). This isnt abojt Bernie Sanders personally, I couldnt care less about him, but about getting someone in the White House who is truly different and progressive and would aggressively fight for progressive and transformative policies like Single-Payer Healthcare and who doesnt take any money from corporations or billionaires. Remember: While Obama is obviously MUCH better than Trump, he still takes money from corporations and billionaires. He is corrupt, albeit much much less than Trump. Bernie Sanders was Americas hope for a truly significant change. And Obama was against him each time and helped elect the DNC favourite. Obama can talk all he wants, sound nice and intelligent and great, but ultimately he is against the change that America (and frankly the whole world) desperately needs. So while I enjoy this interesting interview and Obamas thoughts, I cant and wont ever forget and forgive this. And neither should anyone else. When it actually and truly mattered, Obama backed the corrupt establishment pick (Hillary in '16 & Biden in '20) instead of the people's guy (Bernie Sanders). Please dont take this the wrong way. I also find him reassuring. He makes me feel great and more hopeful. I just cant forgive him for being against Americas only chance for true change in 2016 and 2020. It makes everything he says here sound a bit hollow and frankly a bit out of touch or dishonest

He is as much of a sociopath as Trump he just has more convincing social skills. He will be economically set for the rest of his life while the majority of the public is stuck on the treadmill of the gig economy. Getting money out of politics is not on his agenda and that is all you need to know.

6 minutes into the video, and I was already crying. It felt so good to have a leader say the things he did. Like, yes, you can't look at the horrible things happening and not be depressed. But also, realize our grandparents and great-grandparents lived through even worse times and made it through. Like, it was so comforting to know that "this too shall pass," and things will get better. We have to make sure things get better. Like, dang Obama, you always know exactly the right things to say.
