A slideshow of my latest plastic model build... the Hasegawa 1/32 N1K2-J Shiden Kai kit. A few aftermarket items were used for the build including the Brengun Photoetch detail set, brass cannon barrels from RB Models and HGW fabric seat harnesses. Exterior colors were AK Real Colors on top and Alclad on the bottom. The major markings and codes were painted using custom masks cut from the Silhouette Portrait. The complete build log can be found at LargeScalePlanes.com

Absolutely flawless work. I wish I had your skill and talents. Its so nice to see a build on Japanese aircraft. Second world war Japanese aircraft are largely ignored by both history and the modeling world. Which is such a shame. Japan produced some excellent fighters during world war two. The N1K2 George, the KI-84 Frank and the Mitsubishi A6M Zero.

Thank you so much Jack! The slideshow video was a bit of an experiment and not something that I do on a normal basis. I'm much more comfortable sharing my modeling builds on internet message boards and most of my 1/32 builds can be found at largescaleplanes.com under the username: Thunnus. Please visit the site when you have the time! I agree about the Japanese fighters. I've got a couple more kits on the shelf that I hope to get to in the near future including the Ki-61-i (with a Wolf Pack Ki-61-i Tei conversion) and the Ki-84.

Hello John. First of all I'd like to thank you for posting this video here on KZfaq. I recently picked up this kit and am planning to use your video as my "point of inspiration."👍 While I been building various types of models for nearly 50 years I don't have any experience with achieving the chipped paint affect - i.e. the part where the silver undercoat starts to show threw in places. Anyway, I don't know if you have any spare time or would be interested in doing such, but if you have the inclination I'd love to hear about the procss/technique to achieve this effect. Again, great job on your build & thanks for posting!

Hello! The technique that I used to replicate paint chipping is called the "hairspray" method. Pretty simple. After you lay down your base metal coat (I normally use Tamiya AS-12), you spray a few coats of hairspray. Once that is dry, you spray your normal camo color over it. After a few hours, take a stiff paintbrush moistened with water and start rubbing the area that you want the chips to appear. The water-soluble hairspray creates an unstable layer when wet and will start to loosen the camo paint in little chunks, revealing the metal color beneath. Works best with acrylics (both water and laqcuer-based). For more info, please refer to my build thread at forum.largescaleplanes.com/index.php?/topic/85604-132-hasegawa-n1k2-j-shiden-kai-343-45

Amazing detail on this build! Looks perfect! May I ask how you did the chipping?
@thunnus1964
@thunnus1964 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I used the hairspray method for the larger spots of chipping. Toward the latter stages of the weathering process, I augmented the hairspray chips using paint lightly applied using a sponge and also a silver pencil.

They were output to 1920x1080 resolution for video purposes. The video was made in full HD (1920x1080p) so make sure you view the video in HD.
