Pretty sure Alec Steele explained it a while back. Gives time to think without interrupting the rhythm of the work and takes less energy than either holding the hammer suspended or forcing it to stop without hitting. Keeps unwanted strikes from potentially damaging the piece.

@@super_slo Sounds right. Im not a drummer, but I know they kinda use the same technique where they hit their leg instead of the drum head... keeps time without sounding the drum. I just wondered if the metal might need it. Im not a blacksmith either. lol!

Nice work there sirSir really nice. Thanks for sharing and having us over to the smithy. Notice you said "Swedish " pattern. Is there a certain reference material you draw inspiration or reference point from? Like the Mastermyr find that folks reference to viking era tools? I find these checks somewhat more aesthetically pleasing than the coarser piened style I see more commonly used on KZfaq for smithy hammers. I understand the theory/ practicality of elongation in the checks giving better hold on the handle. Does this style have a similar effect while maintaining a cleaner diamond profile?
