it's weird to remember a time when comedies got a big budget and a wide theatrical release. Streaming services really changed everything. I feel bad for people my age who pursued acting or directing, because the movie industry drastically shifted right after we graduated high school.

@@notsocrates9529 You're projecting some kind of personal bitterness here. 98% of aspiring actors, writers, or industry workers already have to support themselves with a day job. Now they're pursuing a dream to get a foothold in an industry that churns through people's art and hard work as "content", while spitting in their eye by also paying as little as possible. It's a decent movie. The sets and costumes were better than most modern fantasy projects, and the story itself flowed well: it just had the misfortune to come out at a time where hating everything was edgy and cool, and actors shitting on their own creations doubly so.

Yep, such a TERRIBLE film; I remember how bad the (2009) version; such a boring; terrible; waste of time; both on TV; and in theaters; and I'm glad I never saw it in theaters; because I would've walked right the f**k out. Such a disgrace to the name of Land of the Lost; and honestly? Will Ferrell was just boring and not right in the role. Danny McBride though? Was the only reason to NOT walk out of the film; although I wouldn't blame you if you did...I tried to convince myself the 2009 Land of The Lost wasn't a complete pile of garbage, but it most definitely was. I'm even surprised people remember it; at all; really. Because it ended abruptly, and NEVER got the promised sequel; and it ends with the cast being permanently stuck in their Jurassic Park rip-off; and never get back to the other side. Fine by me... if it keeps them from producing another terrible Land of the Lost film like the one with Will Ferrari and Danny McBride(although he was alright in that film), it's fine. But he was great in "Tropic Thunder"; and "Eastbound & Down"; which made me like Danny McBride as an actor. And yeah; Land of the Lost (2009), deserves to be forgotten; but brought up one more time; for an episode, yeah, you're definitely right about that.

@@user-bz8sy9cj8e EXACTLY. But uh; "Tropic Thunder"; though? Give THAT film; a sequel! Tom Cruise? Danny McBride, Robert Downey Jr.(THIS was the film that restarted energy back into his career, and RDJ's very next role? Taking on the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man; the very NEXT year, as everyone who saw him in Tropic Thunder; had THAT much faith in the guy, myself included; and it was worth it. And I'm glad I saw Tropic Thunder in theaters, when it came out; because it gave the people who saw it; knew it would be worth it. And I'm glad I did; but the saddest part about "Tropic Thunder"? It never got that sequel; but I guess when you look at it; while it didn't NEED one; the WORLD certainly could've used a "Tropic Thunder 2"; you know? Instead of a bad remake of an old a$$ TV series that barely ANYONE even remembers(Land of the Lost; 2009), why not just give the world a 2nd Tropic Thunder; with the entire original cast from the 1st one? They're not even doing anything right now! This would be the perfect time and place for another Tropic Thunder...just saying... sorry for the essay; but that's just how I feel about all this, honestly.

This movie is underrated. I love it. I feel that what makes it so good to me is it’s like when you’re trying to run a semi serious dnd campaign and it’s immediately derailed by your goofy friends. Then, instead of getting pissed about it you change the campaign and characters into something they want to play. I imagine the DM starting off making lazaar serious but then later getting silly with it shouting “jumping!” As the BBEG tries to get distance from the party in the final battle, or having the Minotaur start banging their npc helper. It’s crass, goofy, immature, and anachronistic in most of its dialogue, but this is exactly the sort of nonsense a dnd campaign can turn into if everyone is on board and the DM is chill.

I remember when this came out I made it about 20 minutes in and turned it off. I tried rewatching it recently, I made it about 20 minutes in and turned it off. I get it may have enough scenes for a 10 minute gag/funny scenes reel, but it wasn't enough. I agreed with everything you said, and it shows why no one ever talks about this movie. If you're gonna do this type of movie the jokes HAVE to be well written and actually funny (new D&D movie). Labeled comedies set in modern day can be improv because most of the time it's people who are naturally funny cracking jokes, not actual actors trying too hard to BE funny on the fly. In my opinion there's nothing worse than a labeled comedy that isn't funny. I get comedy is subjective, but chemistry is also a big part, and Franco and Danny just didn't have it. They were trying to cash in on their success at the time and thought anything they put out would make $300M. Even Seth Rogen would have been funnier than McBride during that time.

In my mind, I've somehow always conflated this film and Year One. Watching your video on this now and immediately racing to watch your video on Year One from last year, I'm starting to see why. While the talent and intention behind them initially seems very different, with Year One being scripted by incredibly talented comedy writers and Your Highness more being from the onset a massive improv session between its principal players, they both come off with a similar feel. Lowbrow humor that could work in some contexts that instead just feels tiring. It similarly has a strong cast that are playing their usual personas more than distinct characters. Also in similar fashion, they don't have enough straight comedy to make the more stoogish comedy to contrast with. Not only do they have loose connections in their dressing (period piece stoner comedies that try to genre bend a little with historical fantasy) but they share a lot of the same problems. Heck, most of your criticisms of the two movies overlap. Despite having two years between them, Your Highness really does feel like a repeat of most of the mistakes of Year One with a slightly different shade of paint.

Dude. Me too. This and Year One were always on deck. They’re great “dumb” comedies that never get old.

Always enjoyed this movie. The production value was unnecessarily bigger than probably needed but it makes the fantasy aspects work all the better.

David Gordon Green has had such a hilariously chaotic career. Man has a film in the Criterion collection, made a GREAT stoner comedy classic (not this) and also helmed a solid reboot to a classic horror franchise. Inversely, he’s responsible for this bomb and two Halloween sequels that are…divisive to say the least. Oh and can’t forget that Bones and All cameo lol.

This movie is hilarious! Courtney, Julie, & Lazar are great😂. You make some good points, though, perhaps Franco wasn’t a good choice in the role. Still laugh my ass off at this, and I’m 45. Similar to how Will Ferrell disparages “Night at the Roxbury”, I hate when McBride & Co. talk bad about this movie… both are solid comedic films.

As hard as it was to endure Ghostbusters 2016, I’m hopeful that it’s monumental failure meant the beginning of end of the improvised movie/tv show. It should be left to the only person who knows what he’s doing with it: Larry David.
