At the beginning of the film, the Roman numeral date indicates that the film was made in 1959, the first year of Castro's government. 1959 was the last full year of legal capitalism in Cuba; the economy was centralized beginning in July of 1960. The film does not advertise gambling in Cuba, because Castro banned gambling soon after achieving power in January 1959.

In 1959/1960 Cuba had hardly changed at all, in spite of the new government. At that time, even those who later left, people were in love with the Revolution. By 1961 things took a different turn, but still Havana and the rest of the country looked the same as before 1959. Changes, both good and bad, took place as the government allied with the USSR and the US became an open adversary, Bay of Pigs included.

Just came back from Cuba. It must have been so beautiful back when this video was made. All those lovely houses that are now rundown. All the potholed and dirty streets. The Malecon with its uneven pavement with the sea on one side and the empty dilapidated buildings on the other. The ugly old fiats and ladas polluting the air. Such a shame. I am assuming the Prado they are referring to is Paseo De Marti which now has nothing but rundown residential properties on both sides once you go north of the Inglaterra Hotel. The whole thing and the Malecon were probably full of shops back in the day. Must have been a pleasure to walk around. Such a shame. Castros ruined a beautiful country.

So, why did you travel to Cuba in the first place?? Okay for visiting friends or relatives. No problem with that. Tourism is NOT okay and should be banned, cos with your hard currency you nothing but support on one hand unimaginable wealth and greed of the exploiting communist nomenclatura of billionaires that live in luxurious palaces and on the other hand military brutality that watches people all day, tortures dissidents, shoots those who are trying to swim to Florida, pays stool-pidgeons everywhere. The whole country is going down the drain, as long as ordinary working people don't get their fair share of the values they produce with their work ! Cuba high tech products are sought after in the third world, Cuba's exportation is world class level, but the people who produce or manufacture them, get paid a pittance of $ 25 per month ! Same goes for teachers and doctors. Prostitution rises with tourism: today prostitution is 20 times higher than it was in the real Cuba before 1959. Cuba is a country w/o free speech, w/o free press, w/o fress access to the internet and w/o free elections !! People are incarcerated on the island, foreign travel is banned. The US embargo should be tightened, not lifted, cos this would fill nomenclatura pockets with more gold than ever. Any US President thinking of lifting the embargo is the enemy of Cuba and a villain who doesn't care about freedom and human rights. So, again my question: why did you travel to Cuba ?

Interesting that this film is copyrighted 1959. Castro took over at the start of that year, and initially he stated that he would support tourism, while the US government warily supported him. That all came to an end by the end of '59, and soon, there would be no more "Havana Holidays" for Americans. And there still are none today, over 50 years later.

I wish it was that easy. The cold war was about money and both the US and Soviet Union benefited from those strategies by putting $$$ into the industry that polarized the rest of the world. Context is everything. Besides, Peru, Uruguay, Belize, Bolivia all challenged the US example and have been able to maintain a level of progressive development despite not going communist or capitalist democracy.

It is more like 1956 some hints. The FOCSA building finished in1956, the RadioCentro theater is missing the Cinerama sign, installed in 1957. The American flag has 48 stars. But Castro really did not begin to destroy the city until mid 1960. In 1959 things were pretty much as they were in the previous years. I remember a capitalistic economy in 1959 ,that changed in 1960 with the confiscation of private enterprises

Cuba is a beautifully country full with very nice people. A lot of people blame everything on Fidel Castro, but they forget the cuban people were in favor of the revolution, it was the cuban people the ones to blame for what happen. The rich cubans in miami are probably much worse, they are the only ones in favor of the embargo. Everytime the U.S. try to establish relations with Cuba the cubans from miami use all their political power to stop it. All the things happening in Cuba is because of the cubans in cuba and the cubans in miami.

The embargo causes any country that sells anything with Cuba to be fined. This means those countries like Canada, France all of South America and Mexico have to over charge Cuba for medicine etc... That cuts into all expenses the Cuban people would normally benefit from. So the narrative is not as simple as a tourist going to Cuba and making an assessment by one visit but actually looking at all of the Caribbean and Latin America in the context of the cold war and how those countries were affected by US and Soviet polarization.

Fidel called his new regime "Socialism" so that all Cuban's could live a better life, not only the rich. The problem is that socialism can not survive the long run because it has a slow economic growth, less entrepreneurial opportunity and competition, and a potential lack of motivation by individuals due to lesser rewards. No country has ever prospered under socialism or communism and a good example of this is Cuba!

Have I argued at any point that the American system is fair or representative? You are jumping from one extreme which is bad, US capitalism, to another system which is even worse, repressive communism. You should try looking at places like Sweden, Norway and Denmark or even Australia and New Zealand. They all have elements of the good socialist ideas combined with freedom, democracy and the rule of law. Perhaps that's why they always top the world in happiness/quality of life surveys.

1991jerzy , you are an idiot if you think Poland under the USSR was a great time for Poland. USSR allied with Nazi Germany to takeover Poland and together they killed about 1/5 of the entire population. You are obviously not from Poland.

1991jerzy, your grandparents must be Russian. Reason why you kiss communist butt. People forget the whole reason WW2 started was because Germany invaded Poland, and Russia helped them do it. USSR should have never been included in the Allied Pack with USA, England, and France. The Soviet Union was more evil than Nazi Germany.

My father worked since he was 12 along with his brothers to build quite a family business and yes, we were rich, but not at anyone's expense... in fact, no one in the neighborhoods where the family's bodegas were went hungry while my father was in business and it didn't matter if you couldn't pay... they only went hungry went Castro intervened the stores.

Sure, I can Google it... I mean I've already done copious amounts of post-grad research on it using actual historical literature, peer-reviewed articles, archival material etc but undoubtedly what I can find on some post-Communist, Russian or Ukrainian nationalist website will be eye-opening to me. I am well aware that this propaganda exists, that there is a theory that Poland took part in the international intervention etc. I have researched it and you're wrong. All there is to that.

I am not agree with You. Yes, before Castro, free Cuba had the higher living standard then many other Latin American country. The maffia and powerful Batista was only one part of Cuba, not entire Cuba, not workers`, owner `s Cuba. It is horrible that nowdays, Cuba still is putting in jail people for their opinion and that in magazines is the short for supply and that salaries are very low.

As for making Socialism work. In this form of extreme, authoritarian form it cannot work. Everywhere it's been tried it has failed miserably. It is in the process of failing in Venezuela and not only was that socialism not nearly as extreme, Venezuela also has amongst the largest deposits of oil in the world. And "Castro went too far"? Well I could write the exact same thing of Batista, that he was alright, he just went too far. Castro was no better than Batista.

So you care about economy then, not living standards, civil rights or freedom. So you should love the USA, they are all about economy. In India 30 million vote Communist Party. So they have a whole 2-3% support in that case? 30 million people out of a population of about 1.3 billion is not very many. Was your point to show that the communists are not very popular in India? China's economy is doing very well, now how about you talk about the torture, executions and rural poverty that go on...

Where do you live? I really hope its in an actual socialist/communist country because if you live in the "Evil" capitalist West you should be dying of shame right now. Enjoying all the benefits that these poor people do not have and claiming that their lives, free of any civil rights or liberties are better. Yes, authoritarian states usually have less crime. That's because they don't have a transparent justce system based on the rule of law so criminals can just "disappear" in the night.

A world of mass consumism ruins more than a country. It ruins people's values. Yes, Cuba was more beautiful before, but the insecurity, rassism and social class differences were too strong. And for the poor people, it was even worst than now. If Cuba was capitalist, it would probably be a banal country, beautiful as so many others in this world. It wouldn't be unique, maybe you wouldn't be more interssed on it, and you know what... there would be a Mc Donalds! Not saying that Cuba is perfect, it is far from that. But no one will ever be. At least, the people are not contaminated by the worst virus of our world. Internet, advertisings, families living everywhere in the streets as part of the landscape, drugs, ..... YET! Bye

Still, there is usually never a word about Batista in these revisionist histories. His torture chambers would have made the Nazis blush. But again, that made Castro's victory possible. Castro went too far, I will admit, but at least citizens had free education and healthcare they did not under Batista. Castro had the one-in-a-million chance to make socialism work, and he blew it, partly due to the Kennedys' utter obsession about him.
