With recent progress in tyre technology, could this finally be the time for me to ditch my 25 year love affair with tubular tyres? The weight penalty is now quite small, and the potential gains in Crr attractive.......

I’ll stick with my latex tubes and rim brakes
@CyclespeedTours Жыл бұрын
Absolutely nothing wrong with that! The best latex tubes seem to be close to good tubeless.

Same here: Vittoria or vredestein inners. Going to try some 24-33g TPU tubes (in theory this is the same weight as sealant … and a clincher tyre is normally a little less than a tubeless-ready one.

Keep an eye on the Extralite ratchet system. Most brands use springs to ensure pawl engagement, where as Extralite use a single rubber O ring. If it breaks there is nothing to keep the pawls engaged m, which could result in a fall if applying power. No redundancy m, bad design in order to save grams…

Thanks. So far so good, but will keep an eye on it

Question: I currently use tubs on my Old Tarmac SL5, thinking on getting some new decadence 49 or 59, question is: would you still get tubs or clinchers? Weight advantage with this brand is still big with tubs, and we all know hookless is crap thanks!

I am still a tubs fan, because the ride feel is nice and the weight saving is very real.

Would love to know your thoughts on fixing a flat on tubulars when out in a ride ? I have a pair but have never been confident enough to use them more in case of a flat
@CyclespeedTours Жыл бұрын
I get by pretty well with a can of repair foam. As long as the hole isn't too big, it works well. It can require a top up with a pump though after some minutes. If I was ever a LONG way from home, I would take a spare tub with me.

All that super light weight just isn't for me anymore. I've learned my lessons and spent enough money for it. Since I'm not racing anymore I look for durability mostly. And honestly I've been enjoying the bike more. Plus I'm richer now.

Continental doesn't recommend using their products on hookless rims. Tubeless sealants don't work at the 25mm tire pressures needed for a 105kg rider on a steel classic!
@CyclespeedTours11 ай бұрын
Continental DO in fact authorise use on hookless wheels, for certain types of their tyres. And the sealant worked fine, that was not the problem here.

But surely adding 2 kg of Zinc anode is gonna negate any savings...maybe aluminium is lighter

Also,those TT versions are very fregile.they cant beat tubular im that regards neither.hookless rims can be quite dangeorus in 25 mm width tyre combo.
@veganpotterthevegan Жыл бұрын
@mikicastan the fast tubulars are fragile too. That said, GP 5000 TLR, Schwalbe Pro Ones and many others are not fragile and I'd much rather have them at 65psi(28mm) than a tubular at 100psi to avoid pinch flats. Even Ganna's hour record was set on tubeless tires. Nostalgia is the only reason to ride tubeless outside of cross racing and even that's becoming less and less true.

Tubeless has been better for a good 5yrs now. Regular clinchers? 10yrs for everything but riding on a flat. Little money is being put into improving tubular tires and nobody is putting money until making tubular wheels faster either *Valve cost doesn't mean much. They're reusable🤣 Time is money and it's a lot faster to patch a tubeless tire(in the rare instance it needs a patch) than remove, cut open, patch, sew, then reinstall a tubular tire.
