Hi all, it feels so good to be back! In this episode I am casting a curious eye over Hyundai's latest concept - The N Vision 74. This car has a rich heritage and also some controversial influences and I'm really looking forward to sharing my analysis with you.
I took some time away to rethink how I can format these episodes and also the location where I've filmed them. As you can see, the location of this video is somewhere completely novel. Only a sign that says FS VEC gives you any information about what it may be. This is something I'm excited to expand upon and slowly reveal as this channel continues to grow.
I want to give a huge thanks to the eMirage team for supplying me the 3d model of the Hyundai N Vision 74 - the incredible model is available to download from their website - www.emirage.org/2022/08/10/3d.... You can receive 20% off the model by using the discount code: frankstephenson
As always, can't wait to see your response to this car and your feedback on the new direction of the video.
Thanks as always,
Frank

Hi everyone. Thank you so much for watching. I'm really excited to show you the reason I've not uploaded for a little while. I finally feel like I've got a tactile and more expressive way to deliver these videos which allows me to engage with the content in a way that suits me much better. Let me know what you think of the new style for the videos and I'd to hear your conspiracies about where I am before I tell you more about it. Of course, looking forward to hearing all of your thoughts on the Hyundai too. As always, I'll read every comment and reply to whatever provokes me! Best as always, Frank

Frank, I was waiting for this one..nice one....new background as well.....for the next one it will be interesting reviewing the new Dodge charger Daytona. I think designers are begining to realize the big oportunity electric cars are giving to us , now that we don't need that big space were used to be the combustion motor, we designers, can replaced that big empty space with anything else. Now Dodge designers are using this empty space for better aerodinamics. I think we are still at the begining of electric cars. Designers are begining to explore new tipologies of design, In this moment electric cars are too similar to combustion one. but it will change radically the same way very first cars were similar to carriages.

I like the new style very much - My first impression was that you did it just for this Hyundai model (having futuristic environment for a futuristic car review), so not sure how it will feel next time :) I understand how this is more suitable for you also, not having to photoshop and that kind of time-consuming analysis, but instead just doing this "professor to student" type of presentation, which for me is even better than the old way! Hyundai really nailed with this one - when I saw this model, Hyundai improved their brand image in my book, significantly (which was one of their goals of course, if not main one)

Something I found missing from my studies and many teachers telling us not to do, is going back to "old" design styles. And what I mean by this, is that personally I believe good design and good design styles never age - and there will always be something for us to learn from and improve upon, no matter when the style of design was first conjured. So with this in mind, no I do not see this N74 as a retro styling exercise at all. I see it as a very dedicated design team daring to step back and consider how one could pick up on previous design evolutions and take them into a different branch. The idea of always having to create "new" design styles (which many schools/teachers promote) will forever be shallow, and not necessarily guarantee good design. It will only guarantee "different" design which is only different for the sake of being different. No thought, no reasoning, no passion. And design without passion is to me, dead design. I have a select few teachers/mentors who I hold great respect for - and all of them have quite different approaches to design than what is the norm in the industry. And I am thankful that the greatest designers I know on a personal level, are advocates for good design over trendy design.

People confuse change with progress and think if you are not changing accepted norms your are not being progressive. However, moving away from style, beauty, grace or sophistication is not progress it's regress. Sure, technology has advanced by leaps and bounds but one look at what we produce and consume in modern society doesn't speak progress to me.

Agreed. Mercedes is knocking this idea of going back in time for inspiration out of the park in my opinion, and BMW would do well to pay homage to it's past a little more. They mastered the front end headlights this concept has in the eighties and nineties then moved away from it. Their loss is Hyundai's gain.

Well said!👍 IMO the key to a good design is allways relate to nature and older great car designs! They only should vary and improve older design! That's why I love Restomods soo much!😍 They also improve older cars... Okay, mostly it's on a extreme level, on Muscle Cars for Celebrities for example, but when you look at Singer or Eagle, that's the definition of an improved and perfected car! Talking a bit about BMW, they completely lost it!😱 One ugly car after another... Proportions may right, but the Looks are just awful... Look at the 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept Car, that should be the way to go for BMW! The return of the famous "Sharknose" at the frontside! But no...🤷🏼‍♂️

I absolutely love this car, I don’t know how else to say it. It reminds me of those older Japanese Super Silhouette cars or those extreme body kit retro rally cars. Unlike a lot of cars today, I love every angle/shot of this car. Some cars seem to focus more on the front or rear/the overall design language doesn’t match throughout the car. However, with this, this car sure is gorgeous. I can’t tell if I like the front or back view more, but they both remind me a bit of the Toyota Celica from around 1977. Not to say they were the first to do that design, but it’s what immediately came to mind. Either way, I love it! Edit: I remember awhile ago Hyundai did reimagined their Hyundai Grandeur to make it look like some sort of villain EV (it also has the pixelated lights). I was hoping they would eventually start making something like that. Well, they completely outdid theirselves with this design. Hyundai has been killing it lately with this and Ioniq 5 with the more retro-futuristic styling.

That's because older Japanese cars were accepted Giorgetto Giugiaro's design language. Back in 70's and 80's automobile industries manufactured automobiles with press. This is why cars from back in the era were rectangular. And Giorgetto Giugiaro did so well with aesthatically designing to car with press manufactured. His designlanguage took over automobile industries. Japanese cars were also overtaken. before the era, cars were round like Porsche and VW beatle.

@@1greenMitsi It’s not like it matters whether if they did or didn’t, not like I would’ve been able to afford it. And that doesn’t relate in anyway to what I said, it’s still a gorgeous design, as well as all the other cars I mentioned Hyundai recently made (whether it’s the one-offs or mass production vehicles). Frank on this channel has talked about both concept cars that will most likely never been made, production cars, classic cars that will never be made again/anything close to it and even drawings of cars from subscribers that will never ever be made. I’m just admiring a masterpiece of automotive design; regardless of if 0 or 500+ cars are made.

I love how Hyundai is coming up with these retro-cyberpunk designs and think they would really find a market if put into production. I also agree that a better spoiler could be chosen for the design. I would think a spoiler more like the one on the Ferrari F40 in the same color as the body would work better, but instead of having the supports be angled straight up, it could be slanted back so that, in a side view profile, the supports are parallel with the line made by the side view of the rear bumper, rather than directly perpendicular with the rear fenders. Thus, the lines of the trunk roof and the back bumper do not converge, but rather alter the flow of the shape to rise a bit up from where it is at the front of the car.

Hyundai designers seem to have a good idea of what people like. Older people like the old stuff, and young people like the cyberpunk stuff, which are a mix of high-tech and oldschool 70s-80s. It think it's an approach that satisfies both parties. The nostalgia and the futuristic.

Firstly, the Video itself. Bloody Hell Frank you have knocked this one for 6! The virtual environment is such a unique thing it has completely transformed the format. I love how you can walk around the model seemingly in real scale, it really puts it into perspective. The live analysis using the TV screen is really informative, though I must point out there were a few cases of the screen (in the video) being hard to see fine detail on, but that could be my monitor not being able to handle 4K. Another point is where the virtual background is so detailed and impressive, it can sometimes take attention away from your presenting. Other than that though this format is phenomenal, and I cannot wait to see what is covered next

I agree. I understand Frank's point regarding the rear wing, but I think the inclusion of the wing is a throwback to a cyberpunk aesthetic which highlights the use of "implants" or "modifications". The spoiler deviating and standing out is part of that design language and having it blend and not stand out would diminish that nod to the car's heavy cyberpunk aesthetic.

There is now a century of car design to "draw" from. And after extreme pendulumlike swings from round to edgy from the late 80s to the early 2000s, it is really true what is stated in this video that from now on there is such a great chance to apply so many aspects to a cars appearance. The delicate creases of the 60s applied to aerodynamic shapes is something that I imagine. Even the designers of the coach built mega cars of the 30s would have a bright future nowadays 😊

One of my theories about where you are is either a studio you rented out or you had one built or renovated a space on your property that houses a green screen and some awesome tech inside it. Which is why for the break as well. Also want to say gald to have you back missed your videos.

I remember laighing at and making jokes about korean cars 15 years ago. Boy, I must admit, they came a loooong way! Kudos! A true inspiration! I'm 44 and I would have never thought possible that Hyundais might ever look better than any BMW...

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I feel like I owe you some tuition! You really made me think much more carefully about a car I had considered the ultimate in fan-boy service (not that's there's anything wrong with that, I'm a fan boy)... Let's hope we start to see more Guigaro-inspired cars in the next few years! Can't wait for the next video!!!

And it drives like a go kart, too. The Wing is rather video game-esque adds the Need For Speed Most Wanted '05 flavour. As soon as I saw it I thought the designer clearly wanted that mid 2000s underground race car vibe. By the way, holy crap that editing on the video is SSS. I love this layout with the interactive board it like graduating from a bicycle to bike.

Dont forget, this car is much more than a styling exercise. Its a future tech innovation concept car with a lightweght hydrogen unit powering electric motors. Hyundai have created a stunning piece of design AND technological innovation.

Frank! Love what you've done with the place! ;) When I first saw this car a month or so ago the first thing that popped in my head was a 300ZX (Z31) with a Rocket Bunny kit on it. Not objectionable but... is it original? I had forgotten about the original Giugiaro Pony design. Maybe that is what they were going for in terms of a performance car look (RB kit). I really like it - it has all the touch tones of the 70s-80s cars we lusted after back in the day. The front an rear lamp treatments are modern enough to add something to the design. Really need to see the interior...

Welcome back, Frank. We have eagerly awaited your glorious return. And you arrived with a BANG. This is your greatest video yet. Because you took your format to level 💯 As for that wonderful Hyundai concept, l now understand why it reminded me of the DeLorean.

I love the new format. As for the car, it's a Pony/Delorean/Delta Integrale/Ur quattro gone through a time machine and landed in 2022. I can't fault any of it. It's almost picking one of Megadeth/Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer and having a tribute band do a medley of their best song in 2022.

That's a good analogy, but I really don't like this car.... It feels like it's trying too hard to be retro while still marking all the check marks what's cool in automotive culture... Group 5 Box flares check, turbo fan wheels check, spoiler check, etc.....

I also love it & your analytical breakdown is insightful and brilliant as always. I tend to agree re the spoiler - it’s a fine line between purpose & vulgarity. It should still be bold but more subtle. The 911 974 ‘whale tale’ worked for me, even being quite large as it never looked over the top. If a spoiler isn’t needed for performance on this car I would lose altogether (or have auto-raise). If fixed, then something in the 964 direction but even more subtle. The car has such incredible presence already.

Welcome back Frank, and thank you for this spectacular analysis. The car certainly has a presence to say the least. There are a few matters which might be up for debate. I do agree on the spoiler since it’s very unnecessary indeed. Another issue for me personally is the rear diffuser. Its design looks too busy for my eyes to a point that it kills it for me. Take off the spoiler and make the diffuser cleaner, more pleasant to look at. The wheels are another issue; not too keen on them tbh. Personally for me, the entire design is a tad mish mash here and there, and does leave me confused a bit. It needs some cleaning up I think. However, I’m not a professional designer and I’m trying to get into the heads of the design team on this one, but it’s a long stretch I find. Many elements are fantastic and highly expressive, other ones might need some further deliberation perhaps. All the best, and thank you for another brilliant upload. Cherio and ciao.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it's design, I've been waiting to hear them! I hope they do build this, there are a lot of great cars coming but I can't think of any that were in my price bracket that have made me want to immediately put a deposit down, every angle excites me! That top down view is the best, it's like I'm looking out the window down at the car on my driveway. 😁 Hyundai, shut up and take my money! It's funny how the new DeLorean looks nothing like the original but Vision 74 does.

It’s so strange. Just yesterday I was wondering why it’s been so long since you put out a video. My first 2 theories were 1. You had Covid or 2. You got an offer from an automobile manufacturer that you couldn’t turn down. Glad you’re healthy! And great video! Love the new style.

While I like this car a lot, it does feel more "retro" than "futuristic" to me. In part because I already saw similar very brave and over-exaggerated retro-futuristic designs from digital artists like Khyzyl Saleem, and it was years ago. So it's not new to me from the conceptual point of view. But the fact that someone decided to use similar approach for an actual real life concept - for that I applaud them and fully support that. Also, people keep comparing this car to Delorean, but the end result reminds me more of Audi because of headlights and wheels, the body shape is more stubby, short and muscular, and the car looks more lifted from the ground than Delorean.
