Christian, I'm sixty years old. I have taken several English courses throughout my life, here in Brazil. I recently decided to go back to studying English, without leaving home, of course. After visiting many websites, I found The Canguro English. Since then I have watched many of your videos. In each of them I learned something new. It's not just language learning, it's a map that guides you to a better place. You are the best English teacher I have ever met! Thank you!!

From my point of view, you have gone back to take some English classes so far does not prove that your English is not good. You have taken these English classes because you want to gain more skills that you have ignored after years of taking. That makes you a better English teacher if you are a teacher or a better English learner if you are an English learner. whatever it is, those experiences will bring more success to your life in the coming days. Wishing you all the best!

Hi Christian, I'm Maria, I live in Chester and I have an English class near my house in the Unity Centre Esol. This is not bad however, I need less theory and more practice. Sometimes the classes are boring because I would like the teacher to be more vibrant, and give motivation. You are fascinated by every video. I don't need a Certificate, I need to understand and speak. It is so difficult for me because I never studied English before came here and I am 66 years old. Thank you for your help.

Gosh, it's so true! My english had improve a lot with all these videos on youtube about pronunciation, connected speech, IPA, specific vocabulary, most common phrasal verbs and all that stuff. But I really feel like I plateau even when I try to study daily new words and concepts of the language that I didn't know and the reason is that I really don't have someone to practice with. Daily I try to build this "think in english" habit and also I rig up a monologue walking around and imaging I'm presenting to someone else talking alone at my house, although I still hesitate when I want to speak and it's because I don't have anyone else to socialize, to compete, to converse. I just look at my phone like an idiot and think "maybe I'm not using this technology wisely, there must be someway, some digital place to socialize TALKING with native people or good english speakers" but how do I know? If you know, please tell me haha. Some app, forum, whatsapp group, whatever! I'll be happy to join! I'm from Colombia, btw.

A lovely insight Christian, your honesty and openness about yourself and English teaching and learning is a joy. My students here in Madrid all tell me that they have never been taught pronunciation as part of their ongoing learning process. They learned the basic "rules" of pronunciation and some of the many exceptions to the rules, but in the end they speak with many pronunciation errors that can be fixed quite easily with a bit more focus and practice. I always say to them that it's not really about "getting rid of the Spanish accent in their English", rather it's about speaking more clearly so others can understand them better. Likewise, they will also understand others better themselves. The challenge of accents comes when, as non-native speakers, they have to listen to native speakers who have strong regional accents who far too often make little or no attempt to speak more clearly and slowly when speaking with non-native speakers.

Christian, my five cents on directions in a business environment. There are many applications, probably not in a town, but directions are used in documents, images, etc. E.g. top right corner; bottom left line, next to the logo; famous "bottom line"; second tab, last tab in the spreadsheet; hover over the image; etc. Don't beat yourself up. You are just great! The activity probably caused that the students lose fear for the language. Sincerely, Adriana.

As I remember, it is my first comment under your video. I understand that probably, you don't read the comments, but I want to share it anyway. One of the most important elements of perception a language in real life (and again, it's about the social side of it) is authenticity, the sincerity. When you feel that you hear an alive, real person, without masks as possible. That's why this video especially stands out for me. It doesn't mean that your other videos have a lack of sincerity, but in this one you allow yourself more - the right to be vulnerable. And in this case, your language is getting closer to me, getting more understandable, because you are, as a person, getting closer and more understandable.

My dear teacher Christian!! Calm down! Your reflexion about "not totaly feeling satisfied with everything you've done in the past" is normal in all professions. When you speak wiht a writer (for exemple) he/she always said that he/she is not satisfied with his/her first published books. And actually for us are fantastics books. I am a teacher for economics and when I see my old classes few years ago I am surprised that the students did not leave the classes at that time. Reminds me of the saying, 'When one teaches, two learn.' It's the only thing that keeps me going in the face of so much certainty peddled as this theory and that. It requires strength to face the expectations and demands of the market place, which falters in me given the conditioned responses to authority. It' s a call to creativity, to be fully individual, integral to community. This is not the message we get in the din of the market. It is our shared humanity that connects us, this dark terrain that all maps fall short of. And this is the courage to teach. Cheers, mate. You nurture a beautiful world.

Talking about "the depth of your ignorance" is a wonderfully brave thing to do becasue it makes you vulnerable, but also very loveable, as we all have immense depths of ignorance. Seaching this phrase online I found this wonderful quote, which I'm trying to get my head around: "The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls the butterfly." Richard Bach Can somebody help me understand that quote a little better? I feel a bit ignorant!

I enjoyed and agreed with most of this video as an ESL teach, except for the beginning, asking/giving directions is important. What if you need to find a bathroom or help someone find a bathroom and there's a sense of urgency? I'm going to place it highly due to the social aspect of not wanting to soil one's self in public/professional environment and the social cost of doing so. So hopefully you're realizing this and you change your mind about that class being a waste of time.

In fact, this theme about speaking like a native is really interesting. For me, it always was a very important topic before watching your videos, and then, in the past, when you gave your point of view I thought that it was interesting and I got what you was trying to explain, but from my point of view, I always liked to pursuit this native accent (of course I'm still trying). In my opinion it is like assuming a different personality, acting as a character... sometimes we want to be a different person, to be immersed in a different culture and reality, maybe to run away from ourselves. I'm not saying that it should be the main target, because it is just a small part of language learning process.

Hi, Christian, I've been watching your videos for quite a while, and I believe this is the moment where you've come to grips with a problem of all language teaching/learning approaches. In my opinion, all successful language teachers manage to build-up an enjoyable community in the first place; some of them do it consciously and some - intuitively. The second part of the truth is CI (Comprehensible Input): whenever CI takes place, language acquisition happens. The third and the last prerequisite for a language input to be natural and effortless is a context as a language, in my opinion, is overwhelmingly dependent on a context. Now, allow me to say this: with your success, you owe to all these three things. And I nearly forgot to tell the most crucial thing in favor of the social aspect, and that Thing is Love. Thank you for your love to people you teach, Christian.
