Over the summer, PSG were hailed as having one of the greatest transfer windows of all time, bringing in the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, and Lionel Messi - all on free transfers.
However, three months into the season, there is a feeling of quiet discomfort about the performances of Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League, and plenty of criticism aimed at Mauricio Pochettino.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at some of Mauricio Pochettino's struggles, as well as a deeper malaise regarding the culture at the club, and ponders whether PSG might have made some very costly mistakes.

@@jatin2616 I disagree very hard. Messi has done those type of things more than Maradona and Baggio combined. Also let me remind you that he is 34 and has been doing it since 17. But ofc it has been reduced. Players change when they grow older. And messi is one of the smartest players in the world every move and every thing he does has a reason. He wants win just doesnt want to show off. Everything is for the benefit of the team. It doesnt mean that he wont do those things. He does but if it benefits the team by some way.

I'm honestly starting to believe that there are just too many factors in creating a winning team. Having good individual players is just one part of that. I think too many people believe that having three of the greatest players in the world with guarantee you things, no. You could put together a wonderteam like playing FIFA, but if you can't find chemistry, a playstyle, a game plan then things won't work out. In the end the best players are just not noticeably better than the average ones, they won't change your luck alone, even the likes of Messi and Ronaldo I'm afraid.

I couldn't have described PSG's superteam any better than you did in the title. My issue with PSG is that all the other European contenders all have a tried and tested blueprint on how they can win the Champions League whereas I feel PSG - with all their star quality - still haven't quite cracked the Champions League jackpot. I don't necessarily agree with the whole "farmers' league" term people use to dismiss Ligue Un as a sub-par league but it's hard to disagree that PSG's season doesn't start in February when the Champions League knockout stages begin - given PSG's dominance over French domestic football over the last decade. It'll be interesting to see whether or not Messi can lead PSG to unprecedented Champions League glory 🤔

I mean Mbappe missed from 5 yards against Bayern in a champions league final that they ended up losing 1-0… they’ve been to at least the semi’s 2 years in a row knocking out (an admittedly Lewandowskiless) Bayern, Barcelona (with messi at the time), Atalanta (during the season in which they almost won Serie A) and Leipzig at the top of their game under nagelsman… they’re currently top of the toughest CL group and a win tomorrow night takes them through and a point against city wins them the group. They’re almost unbeatable at home when the crowd’s in (even in Europe) because it’s one of the loudest in Europe… this whole super team can’t win anything because no one works hard thing is demonstrably false, against city both Neymar and Mbappe we’re defending in their box, Neymar regularly presses hard for Brazil, Di Maria does for Argentina… like I would get the doom laden hypotheses if they were actually in any danger of going out… they’re not

@@callumalston5755 Totally agree but the point I'm trying to argue is PSG's style of play in relation to other UCL contenders. Guardiola's Man City play a clear possession-based style, Klopp's Liverpool gegenpress, Tuchel's Chelsea play with an extremely effective counterattack and Naglesmann's Bayern - similar to Liverpool - use a very effective press and apply a very high line. PSG to me seem like a team of brilliant individuals rather than a like-minded entity greater than the sum of its parts.

For me the greatest differences with Real Madrid, specially with the 2010's era, are that, while having the biggest stars from all over the world, they still had plenty of in house talents (or players that came at early age and stayed in differfent categories for 10+ years) that lived for Real Madrid principles and were able to instruct and inspire other players that came, to tell them what Real Madrid represents, wants, and lives for, that carried the name with pride and love and tried their best to form a sense of unity around those pinciples. Another big thing for me is that even the president and ejecutives are just directing the club, it cannot be buyed and even if they can have their things to complain about and find them faults and flaws, they are, again, in house people, they have been "socios" and supporters for their entire lives and they will always be. That also plays a role in wanting the best for Real Madrid interests and not only while they are managing it, for the greatness and prosperity of the club for years to come. And lastly, PSG cannot match Real Madrid's legacy, it speaks for them, as players, managers, presidents... Everyone knows what RM represents in the football history, and that has a weight on everyone that involves themselves with the club.

Let’s be honest, Spurs had some luck to reach that final. But Poch being successful at Spurs doesn’t mean he’ll be successful at the top clubs. Like how David Moyes flourishes when managing a mid table club like West Ham, but grumbles when managing a top club. There’s levels to this and I don’t think Poch is ready for a big club. Like the video said, Poch does well in “project” clubs, PSG is not a project club, they expect to win now and that’s the problem because so far they don’t look anywhere near of even reaching the semi final

True I agree. I just think the people calling him a bad manager is ridiculous. I'd say he's more out of his depth. What you are all saying is true though. I'd class Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe as good managers for both managing to keep their teams in the Premier League for aslong as they have/did with the squads that they had. But if you put either one in charge of a Real Madrid or a Man City it wouldn't work. Just think it's harsh to call people terrible managers when they are simply just out of their depth.
@fimmyk
@fimmyk 2 жыл бұрын
@@J-CG Yup, true. I think he's out of his depth but it doesn't mean he's a bad manager. He can still potentially be very successful at clubs that will allow him time and freedom to sell players and buy the ones he want etc. But going to ready made clubs that expects him to win the UCL with what he has, it'll be difficult. But with all the criticism he gets, the main reason is his use of Messi, its seems like he wants Messi to change from doing what he has been doing through out his carrier that made him the best player, and turn him into a winger. To see him not being able to know what to do with Messi on its on is a sin and that alone can get him the sack. More so, Messi and Neymar have already proven they can form a deadly partnership if used right (as proven from their time in Barcelona) but yet, under Poch, those 2 don't even seem like they've ever played together.

I’ve been watching PSG a lot this season mainly because of Messi. And they just don’t play good football, they fail to create many clear chances and defensively they concede too many crosses which lead to goals. Messi has struggled to make an impact and I believe it’s because he isn’t receiving the ball in areas which he can be dangerous in on a consistent basis. I also think Neymar just looks a shadow of the player he was 2+ years ago. I personally don’t think Pochettino is good enough for the job, I think PSG need a manager who can control the ego’s in the dressing room. Someone like Peo Guardiola would thrive at PSG.

As a City fan I beg to differ, Pep would have the same problem with Pochettino. Pep and Pochettino play high pressing football, but PSG's front players don't press, so unless PSG's front players press, then even Pep's system, or even Klopp won't work well. I'd even go as far as to say PSG and Pep are like oil and water. Pep would fight the star players for not working hard enough for his system, and the players want to show to Pep that they are bigger than the club, the club will obviously support the players, and it will result in a big fallout. I think PSG need a manager flexible in his systems, a manager that doesn't use high pressing. Most of all someone who is good at man- management. I think Zidane would be an obvious choice.

this is why more clubs need to implement ideologies similar to gasperini at atalanta. just fill your squad up with hard working, box to box, physically fit players who are sure to put the team ahead of themselves (a good way to find those players is to do what they did and focus on players from the belgian, dutch, russian, and other lower leagues). Look at duvan zapata, he went from a serie a bust to one of the best strikers in the last few years, all because he’s part of a selfless system that compliments the TEAM over one player. Agreed on all points Alfie. With PSG they are too heavy up top,their forwards are brilliant with the ball but futile without it,the lack of physicality and ground duel ability is of major concern.They need to balance out their team and put players were they can contribute the most and be able to help out without the ball.So starting all 4 will never work,given their ages plus lack of physicality,so I say play 3 and find a strong midfielder who is strong in the air to win aerial duels at mid of the park.Then have a back 3,so wingbacks can push up to help the forwards recycle possession outside their half. But which ever way,Poch is expected to win every game and if he fails to reach Champions League final,then he will be shown the door. Its so hard managing a heavily financed team that is obsessed with winning UCL.

I've done it so many times in Championship Manager. You get the best squad together and then pull your hair out trying to fit the attacking talent into one team. Eventually you play most players out of form and into disenchantment by trying to keep everyone happy. Messi needs to be in the #10 role and Mbappe needs to be the pressing striker. If there are too many attacking talents then one (Neymar/Di Maria) needs to be on the bench

@@oswaldjames6295 I love Di Maria. The problem is not Di Maria but fitting Jr, Messi and KM in the same side. The video is about maximising Messi while minimising his defensive weakness and the general lack of high press (Poch's fav strat) in the PSG team. Neymar has taught Mbappe bad habits. Mbappe has so much pace and stamina he should be like Tevez on Maradona's 94 WC formula I like your formation but I'd go 3-2-3-1-1 with PSG's current squad. Their squad is stupid they have 3 world class GKs and 5 GK in total but only 4 forwards. If everyone is fit their best XI to balance out their weakness against a quality side while still being incredibly dangerous going forward is: Donnarumma - GK Kimpembe - LCB Ramos - CB Marquinhos - RCB Gueye - DMF centre-right Verratti - DMF centre-left Di Maria - AMC Neymar - LMF/LWB/LWF* Hakimi - RMF/RWB* Messi - SS/#10/Free* Mbappe - Striker/LCF* * are the preferred positions The team is still unbalanced this time with Neymar but that setup is compensated by the two holding midfielders and the extra space this would create for Hakimi and Messi on the RC and RWF, Hakimi being an expert crosser I'd rotate Neymar with Di Maria on the left, maybe sub one for the other every game to enable them to play that defensive position, or just drop Neymar or Di Maria in favour of Gini. Neymar would then become the super sub in the AMC/SS/Striker/LWF role. Neymar like Messi is more dangerous in central positions but he is now competing directly with the other 3. Can Neymar be trusted to play AMC or LMF? Probably not so acquiring Messi means Neymar is on the bench this season IMO

The time is coming where Football is going to price itself right out of existence. The Transfer Market and Wages etc. has got absolutely bonkers and even the most mediocre Player is costing a Club and arm, keg and both balls to buy. Maguire is the perfect example. £80m plus, for a Donkey that is worth £45m on the Transfer Market, getting a flat wage of £180k a week, who is no better (if not worse!) than Tyron Mings...Both English. Both the same age. Mings would cost £27m No doubt add another £10m, just because he is English and HG), to buy and would command a wage of no more than £85k-£90k a week. I would say 3 years ago and before the Transfer Market went nuts, you could of got Maguire for about £30-£35m and on a wage of £70k a week tops. Mings would have cost £20-£25m and about £45k a week. I do not care who they are, or what value they bring in endorsements, is Neymar really worth the £480m paid? (now with a worth of £105m).Messi is valued at £80m by PSG and he is knocking on 35 ffs. Something has to be done and a Cap has to be introduced, before all of Football ends up like the old NASL in 1985.

Sacchi - despite not having won any major trophy prior to his time at Milan - was a visionary who reinvented the way the game was played in the 80s and once he got the visibility at Milan, he got the entire Europe trying to copy him. He set himself apart back then sort of like Guardiola in the present time. Pochettino, already visible for years, is not, nor will ever be on that level. In fact, PSG should have added signing a top manager to their unbelievable transfer window, because if you have a F1 car and want to win the race, you better let a F1 pilot drive it. Also, they need someone strong enough to set the records straight with the ownership, to the effect that players only refer to the manager for anything other than contractual matters, since it looks like there are discipline issues related to management of the individual players and confusion about communication channels

Why people are expecting PSG to be unbeatable ? Yes the do have great players but who are those great players ? -- Messi: I am a die hard fan of him, the GOAT. However, I dont need to clear my eyes to see that he is not the same as he was once, Messsi does struggle playing against quality opponents and also struggling with his fitness now a days. -- Ramos: Same as above, one of the best CB for more than a decade but not the same and also struggling with injuries. -- Wijnaldum: Certainly a good option and very experienced but not one of the best CM currently. -- Neymar , Mbappe, Di Maria, Icardi were playing together before this transfer window . PSG did not win any UCL even with that attack. -- Hakimi , Mendis and Donnaruma are surely good signings. Managing a team that has all of these high profile players requires a different type of coach which PSG lacks currently. Also, a team needs to be in cohesive , which will be very difficult as the type of football they have played is different. Its gonna take time.

Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 221) I will not give up until the video is made or Alfie himself tells me to stop. Everyone else telling me that will be ignored. If you don't believe my number, just go back to the previous videos. I'm at the bottom most of the time, but I'm there.

Man city would have turned into this had it not been for Pep
@kb9889
@kb9889 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that is the case. Man City's board has members who were part of Barcelona's board (when they were good), and I think Man City has more of a vision for the future, with the academy and facilities and stuff. I see PSG as a club trying to replicate Real Madrid's Galacticos, and I see Man City drawing inspiration from Pep's Barca. One a star studded team with big egos, and another a hard working team. But yes Pep does play a big part in that, seeing as our academy plays the same type of football as the first team. The day he leaves I hope we never turn into Galacticos.

Pochettino has the worst win percentage for PSG in Ligue 1 since the QSI era, he is a decent manager but PSG don't suit him and they won't win the champions league with him

The expectations are too high there. Tuchel couldn't shine there, immediately after he was sacked, he won the CL at Chelsea. The same Will happen with Poch, he'll be successful after he's inevitably sacked. PSG is a poisoned chalice.

The thing about PSG is that they remind me of that old adage, "Too many chiefs, not enough Indians." They have many great players, but they haven't assembled a great team. When signing players, you have to take a holistic approach, see how they fit together and how they fit with the club's philosophies. What you have in Paris now is a bunch of divas who all think they're bigger than the club and you can never win with guys like that when they're the ones dominating the locker room.
