Gutting a short bus can be difficult. We have taken demolition to the next level and stripped the bus to the frame. In this video, we finish up removing the windows, welding side guard holes and prep the inside for the rebuild.

If I did a schoolie conversion, I would remove the rub rails temporarily and take the rub rails to a chrome shop for chrome plating and then reinstall them.

I wish I had enough of life left to spend the time it takes to do a build. I drove school buses for 32 years. Fun to watch and love the design of that bus you did. Got a trailer but prefer a bus. Have lots of fun!

I’m happy to see you at least had a little bit of struggle with those four bolts on the back as I’m sure you know bus conversions never come easy there is a step after step just fighting at least that has been for me It sounds like it was for you in your first one anyways love in the series so far getting a lot of good tips hopefully I see you on the road someday

Elbowgrease! Looooots of it... 💪🏼 It's always the little things, most of them easy but booring and time consuming and not really fun, that make the the finished project outstanding and a feast for the eyes. Use awning type windows if you can. All the new RV van manufacturers are using those. Seems perfect for a bus. I would love to have you guys make my Skooley. I actually know how to use tools and know how I would plan the floor plan. BTW, I would want a short bus too. It would be so much easier to find and get a parking place than a full-sized school bus. Where I live, they have some short buses that are not school buses, and if I decide I want to convert a short bus, I will put together a floor plan that will make the best use of limited space. Murphy beds are part of that.

I have seen some bus conversions that still have the metal roofing. I would like to do that in mine so I can use magnet hooks to hang things from the ceiling (a few plants, maybe pots and pans). Anyway is there a way to pull them down, insulate and put back up? Or do they pretty much destroy with removal? Thank you

This is fantastic! I’m loving your build and thanks for all the details. I’m working on my own at the moment and it’s so helpful. Quick question. Was just wondering what grit sandpaper you use on the outside for the Bondo?

It stages up so that it gets finer and finer. It will give you a smooth finish. Key to bond is don't put too much on... saves a lot of sanding.

when you buy bondo, look at the label and make sure it says "Non Staining", in 6-12 months you may have a spotted bus, it does not pay to use cheap bondo (35+ years experience). Same for your paint, do not use rustolium, buy an epoxy primer, or at least a 2k, but if you use 2k then you must buy an etch primer also.

if you do this work often it might be a good idea to get one of these big tents to park the bus inside in , think those surploss army tents should work , you just have to set it up around the bus instead of driving it inside

Why did you remove the rub rails on the outside? They are part of the structural integrity. For looks?

They are not structural to the bus holding together they are added for safety to protect children on board. Now that we are converting to an RV they are not needed by specs so I decided to take them off for looks.

Hey Mike. After removing the rails and cleaning up the holes in the exterior, did you then rivet the exterior skin back to the interior sheets with new rivets? Or...just use the vertical lines of rivets left in?

I spot welded the sheet metal to the rib so I didn’t have to have any rivet reveal

It is a HD Lincoln Electric wire fed Mig welder. Nothing special.

I will not be worried about it at this point. Any rain that falls inside the rig dries up fine. Once we get to wood and waterproofing then it will be something I will look out for.

Are you concerned about heat or cool air loss to the glass windows?

It will be a heat and cool loss. But, I am not that concerned because I will add insulated shade and the rest of the bus will be spray foamed

You can always sheet metal the outside and replace with double pane rv widows. I have installed them before and they are really nice and easy install just close a bit upfront.

I know you are busy but have contacted you a couple of times about building a transporter bus for small animals with a second split floor so it would double the area and a small area for bed/couch kitchenette.
