Probably my fav Mad Tea Party is the one they did on the Muppet Show. Brooke Shields plays Alice and it starts out "normally" enough, though the Dormouse is played by a chicken. Things "start" to get weird when the Tweedles (Statler and Waldorf) just show up. Kermit runs in, claiming the party's gone too far. Brooke suggests they sing a song. Cue Fozzie as the Tin Man starting a rendition of "We're Off to See the Wizard". Why was Fozzie dressed as the Tin Man? He thought they were doing Peter Pan. Yeah, this episode is nuts and I love it.

Throwing in random things that have nothing to do with AIW ironically makes it even closer to the source material with it’s absurdity

Jan Svankmajer’s Alice is probably one of my favorite adaptations, mostly because it’s just one of the more unique and interesting takes I’ve seen. There’s only so many times you can hear people in costumes recite the book word for word before it gets boring, while the stop motion film gives it a completely different tone and atmosphere. Though the 99’ film looks pretty interesting. Had no idea Gene Wilder was in one of these! It seems like he was born to play a Wonderland character lol

When I first saw Jan's Alice I thought it would be just a short film with creepy alice inspired imagery. I aprpeciate how the film really fully commits to the weirdness in unique and surprising ways. Good film to turn on and just zone out to and appreciate the insanity.

since I was a little kid i've been OBSESSED with alice in wonderland. half of my bookshelf is different adaptations or publishings of it and I have ridiculous amounts of dvds of different film adaptations of it. Glad this video found its niche! my favorite film adaptation is the 1972 live action (the second one shown in the video)

I didn't know there were this many adaptations. Fun fact about the psychedelic stuff, I actually watched the Disney adaptation (which was the first time I even seen anything from AIW) while I had my first psychedelic trip. Anyways, some of these look pretty interesting and worthwhile of checking out, so thanks for this video. However, I wouldn't have been mad if you left out the... NSFW version

5:50 I get the feeling that this movie REALLY wanted to be the live-action equivalent to 1939's "The Wizard of Oz". 7:50 Alas the same fate befell Puff the Magic Dragon. Can nothing be left wholesome and untainted? :/ 15:10 That's because Disney did it in theirs and everybody just has to copy Disney.

I recently got a hardcover copy of Alice in Wonderland from the Tate museum featuring the illustrations of Finnish artist Tove Jansson (the creator of the Moomins) and, to be honest, they made me enjoy the story even more than Tenniel’s creepy original ones. Jansson’s artwork and style is so soft and whimsical, and her Alice illustrations gave the story a feminine and childlike tone I had never even imagined before. I would love to see a film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that takes inspiration from Jansson’s depictions of the characters and has the same flavor as one of the many adaptations of the Moomin books and comics. I remember seeing a short adaptation of Alice in Wonderland made by Rankin/Bass as a part of their Festival of Family Classics series (which was animated in a very similar style to Frosty the Snowman) and I absolutely loved the colorful aesthetic and cute character designs, even though they were unfitting for the original story’s tone.

@@alegendamongmen I can understand OPs feeling. When I was a teen I remember really wishing there was a scary Oz or Alice. The older I get the more I started to appreciate the source material and original vision. Alice is so weird, it doesn't really need to be horror and when people try it often loses its soul in the process. Plus, this has already been attempted in various types of media like American McGee's Alice. If you really want horror versions, like in the video or Kim Jong Il said, just watch the Czech Alice or Return to Oz. They're both pretty demented in their own ways(Return to Oz, the Hall of Heads, Dorothy receiving electroshock therapy, etc.)

A thing that I really despise about Disney’s Alice in wonderland is that it basically Brain washed everyone into thinking that it’s the actual story of Alice in wonderland like there are so many adaptations now in days that are just like Disney’s and it’s just a pain that not that many people now the actual story and are just Lazy and copy Disney, I asked my friend who “claims” she’s a fan of Alice in wonderland and Lewis Carrol questions about the book and she got most of them wrong

It sounds like he may have what’s called Autism. I have it myself, and people say that I can be quite monotonous. Ironically, people speculate that Lewis Carrol had autism as well, and that much of the Wonderland story can serve as a metaphor for autistic experiences, whether intentional or not.

Good presentation. I have the animated Disney film as well as the Seventies porn version. Certainly makes for an interesting double feature! I also have “Dreamchild,” which includes moments inspired by the books as the elderly Alice Hargreaves (nee Liddell) reflects back on her childhood friendship with Lewis Carroll. I’m a bit surprised that you’re not familiar with some of actors in the 1985 version (Martha Raye, Anthony Newley, Steve Allen, Merv Griffin, married singing team Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme), but I’m much older than you. BTW, I have that annotated edition of the books and a Carroll biography that provided a lot of interesting background information on one of our favorite authors. I also have a beautiful book by Catherine Nichols titled “Alice’s Wonderland” that covers nearly everything Alice, at least up to that point. I’ve seen Jan Svankmajer’s version and would like to get it on DVD someday. That’ll probably be it for me.

Now we were poor when we were children and we had seen one that the movie we are looking for was on the afternoon TV channels it was long before sky TV was everywhere.
