Rhonchi are coarse, rattling respiratory sounds that are caused by secretions in the bronchial airways or by obstructions. Rhonchi can often be heard in conditions such as chronic bronchitis or pneumonia. They may clear with coughing, indicating that the cause is movable. Check for any productive sputum and fever or chills in your patient while you gather vital signs.
