The Little Man/prisoner/Gus is voiced by Candy Candido, who is also the voice of one of Maleficent’s goons in Sleeping Beauty, the Indian Chief from Peter Pan, and the captain of the guard crocodile from Robin Hood 🐊
Gus’s inspiration goes back even further to a man in Athens from 62-113 AD who was called Pliny the Younger. He was a philosopher who heard chains rattling, and would follow the sound until it stopped and the ghost vanished. Then he marked the spot and when they dug up that spot, they found remains. That’s the origin of the idea of ghosts rattling chains, which Gus is holding in the Haunted Mansion in his second appearance.

A cast member told me that actually, Phineas is Gus's Doctor and Ezra is his Lawyer. They follow him around because he's trying to get to court. Not sure that's true but cool nonetheless and kinda funny.

Haha that for sure sounds made up by CMs. There is a lot of backstory of the HM that isn’t official but gets passed around as such.

That’s the Ghost Gallery backstory which isn’t all canon (it was written by Cast Members). Disney has taken a few details from it though and made it canon, like the first names and professions.

I have never seen any evidence suggesting that any of the Haunted Mansion houses (or the houses that inspired them) are confederate.

@@disneycicerone the one in California is definitely based on New Orleans mansion designs. Can't say if it is particularly _Confederate,_ as New Orleans was a thing since before 1812 and Andrew Jackson and LaFayette kicked British butt.
