I absolutely loved it. Instead of the conventional “falling in love” journey, the characters have already fallen in love and it’s like “life after”

This is from the guys who made Furi, so I hoped the narrative was going to be interested. Glad to see these guys continuing to make interesting games. Best luck to The Game Bakers in the future!

When i first started playing this game i noticed a cooking feature. you get to cook meals from stuff you find in haven with your significant other. I thought "cool, i cant wait to see what kind of critters i can hunt to make delicious meals with, with my partner".... after i reached the middle of the game i realized youd never eat the critters you fight, you just kick their ass and send them on their way. It was then that i realized i was playing a couple of vegans in a survival game! LOL

I don't know if I'd call it a major selling point. The devs said it's designed as a single player experience, and that the co-op mode is more of a novelty

It's honestly cringe inducing to play with your SO. Maybe it's just me, but I like experiencing the quirks of a relationship with an actual person. Watching a digital couple go through makes me uncomfortable, SO and I were like "Is that what we're like lol"

That is because it's not. It's a chore simulator. Game play is so tedious and boring that I dropped it four hours in.

Thank you for reviewing this, Brandon. I've been waiting for this, as it looks fun for me and my girlfriend. Would've hoped to hear something about the co-op but I bet we'll try it anyway! And thank you for Cat Quest 2 review that you did. That has been one of our favorite co-op experiences!

I really didn’t expect this game to have so much narrative and great performances. I remember seeing this for the first time a few years ago and thinking “oh that’s pretty.”

I really loved playing through this game with my gf. Yu and Kay are so cute. Zooming around feels fun. The combat isn't fantastic but it's not annoying or tedious either. The soundtrack and artstyle are fantastic. One of my highlights of the year honestly.

If you are on the fence about this game it’s a pleasurable game. It doesn’t over stimulate any of the normal feeling of a game but more of a good book where once you get to a certain chapter you just keep rolling through just engaged. Minor bugs and issues are there but nothing very unsettling because there are so many saves in the game any time I’ve died or had to reset the game I’m right where I was.

Never knew about this game until today. The method of traversal and setting are very much like an idea I've been mentally conjuring lately (something like Mega Man Legends but with more verticality, and different "floating rocks" you can visit). Damn, I really need to finish my main project so I can move on to something like this.

@@Ayoul It's edited with care and the message that these characters are interesting and well written comes through, Jones clearly was affected by them; this isn't a major release and so if none of the Allies had ended up reviewing it I don't think it would have been a problem, Jones reviewed it because he had something to communicate and he DOES raise interest for the game while noting its failings. Check out Ben Moore's Metal Wolf Chaos Don't Skip and you'll find a similar tone, praise mixed with criticism. Also, it just so happens that Haven IS on Game Pass

Been playing this game with my girlfriend. It's a fun co-op game for sure. There could have been major things done to this game to make it better (gameplay-wise), but I love the interaction of the two characters. I do love the music though, my lord the music. The opening theme is awesome.

I didn't have problems with the writing errors, spelling and punctuation. Probably because I played the version translated to my language. It's likely, the developers wrote the english text themselves and let some experts write the translated text.

The transportation modes (walking like you're 100 years old, or flying 100 mph) was one of my biggest complaints as well. Really enjoyed your review! Keep up the great work 😀

After playing the demo, I was enjoying the gameplay for what it was but the dialogue and its delivery felt really terrible to me. It seemed like a relationship that was bound for a breakup from a lack of chemistry or a solid foundation. I was hoping there'd be some improvements in the release but it just seems like that's the game's standard. Probably great for some but it was a huge turn-off for me. Great review though!

Got to admit these procedural jrpgs often lack a bit of heart and there are far too many of them. The whole area could use a bit of shaking up. Even if you don’t innovate, there’s no reason you have to be predictable. That’s always a way to reinvigorate a genre. Say, something like Shadow Hearts. The recent paper mario is a good example of mechanical innovation, but they packaged it with being more formulaic in the rest of the game.

I’m all for developers trying new things but Furi was such a fantastic game that I kind of hoped for a follow up game closer to that, than what we got here. Haven looks interesting, but it seems like there’s not much to it.

Oof, 7.5/10? Did he actually delve into the gameplay, the story, and the characters? Making it seem like following the flow is hard, it’s incredibly easy. The fighting takes some getting used to but that comes with any game with trial and error. Having thoroughly played through the game I fully enjoyed myself. It has some challenge with end game enemies and their move sets. But it’s not something you gotta do, only if you’re trying to 100% everything.

Just letting anyone know that's thinking about getting this game, I'm pretty sure there's been a lot of updates since it's release and I haven't found anything that takes me out of the experience tbh. It's very immersive and on the subject of the relationship being cringy, you definitely get used to it very fast so don't worry

Once again absolutely nothing said about the soundtrack, what looks to be just the two people talking throughout I think the soundtrack would be important to help immerse the player. Doesn't brandon have a background in theatre? Surely he should understand how important music is to help tell a story.

Gave this a playthrough because it was on gamepass. Bore almost no resemblance to Furi, total let down. I played and championed the living dickens out of Furi and I found this game leaned out of every strength and into every weakness they have as devs. 7.5 is generous, one of the worst of the year for me.

Ugh. I will never understand the point of putting combat unchallenging games. Mandatory unchallenging requirements is basically the definition of “tedious”. Either make it challenging or get rid of it entirely,

While I won't speak for this game as I haven't played it, I would argue that sometimes combat works from a narrative perspective without necessarily being a big part of a game. Sometimes you don't need a lot of combat, or for it to be hard, but a climactic boss fight can really push an already good sequence over the top even if the combat itself isn't actually hard. A good example of this takes place in Final Fantasy XV. Overall the game is a bad example since there's a lot of easy combat in it and it's mostly pretty bad, but a good example of what I'm talking about is the Leviathan boss fight. The fight is more or less impossible to lose, but a lot of shit has just gone down in the story and it feels a lot more impactful to beat the shit out of Leviathan yourself rather than watching Noctis do it in a cutscene, even if there's functionally no real way to die. There's another sequence with a similar payoff late in the game, where Noctis has been brought to his absolute lowest point and has been forced to sneak through an abandoned fortress crawling with monsters, bereft of his weapons and the help of his friends. After a long time you finally find a weapon that kills the monsters very easily, but since this comes right after Noctis undergoes some character development it feels really cathartic to be able to easily destroy the monsters that previously hunted you through the pitch-black corridors of the fortress.

Who is the target audience for this game, people who are interested in romantic narrative story telling don't normally dig turn based combat, people who like to explore vast open world ala journey or flower don't care for dialogue heavy story and turn based fans are more strategist than emotional players, kinda weird

Okay so it takes two seconds to think of an already infinity more complex and intriguing storyline for the world set up here. And find it mind boggling how literally no one thought about it. Not even difficult, and might’ve been something to make me interested in the game. The premise, from what I can surmise from the description, is two ‘lovers’ sent on a mission. But the implication could be that it was a forced encounter. So let’s say, either one or both of the main characters are homosexual. And during gameplay you get to witness, or preferably choose, how the two have to bond under inconvenient circumstances. You get to see not the most drab, dull, surface level player interaction of the most basic and uninteresting interactions between two people. Like if your interest is supposed to be deemed by the growing interest of two extremely conventionally attractive straight people getting to know each other better. You may as well show me paint dry. Ah yea that plot that has existed since the creation of christianity, and since forced creativity and complexity out the window. Cool.

No it isn't lmao. There's plenty of modern games that do turn based combat and are incredibly complex. The smt series is known for it and it can be brutal.
