I'm not over-enthusiastic but after listening to Brian I want always to hear more. Somehow he gets you. As you said he's almost mainstream now, and easy available. In any case thank you for this quality recording.

Brian may not be a great symphonist, but his music is strangely appealing!😀

@ClassicsAndVinyl - Hi Bob, a wonderful upload! I can remember buying this HMV Greensleeve re-issue when it was released, it came out at much the same time as the Mackerras recording of Symphonies 7 & 31, again on HMV, which I bought at the same time. These, together with the Leicestershire Schools SO recording of the 22nd Symphony, were all purchased on the strength of the Lyrita release of the 6th and 16th Symphonies which you recently featured. I think, at that time, these recordings were pretty much all there was available of Havergal Brian's music (how times change, he's almost 'mainstream' now!) and they all presented a compelling case for his symphonic music. A great upload, Sah!

Hi Tony. Yes, recordings of Brian's music were pretty thin on the ground back in the day. The Leicestershire Schools disc kicked off the revival as far as commercial recordings were concerned. You mentioned the Mackerras 7 & 31 - coming to a channel near you in a couple of weeks ;o) Brian's symphonies are quite quirky really. I wouldn't say he's a "great" composer, but his music is definitely worth listening to.

@@ClassicsAndVinyl- I shall try to ensure my channel-viewing on KZfaq coincides with the next Brian installment! You're right about both the quirkiness of his symphonies (the sheer variety of styles in his symphonies is certainly quirky) - I liken him to another English symphonist, Edmund Rubbra. I also agree that he isn't a great composer (although, how do we define 'great'?); maybe if composers were in the English Football League he would be in the upper reaches of League Two! To put that into context, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and a few others would be in the Premier League!

@@tonyobadinage6647 I feel League Two is a bit harsh ;o) Mid table League One heading up to the playoffs for the Championship maybe . . . I think Rubbra had a much more cohesive style than Brian - you never know quite what you'll get with Brian, he was quite episodic. But it's interesting what, or who, is considered "great". Is popular music popular because it is great, or great because it's popular? Do you have to be well-known to be great? I would say not to the latter, but if you're not well-known you won't be popular . . . But does it matter anyway - just listen and enjoy (or not!).

@@ClassicsAndVinyl- I fully agree with you about popularity, or even fame, not being a pre-requisite when assessing greatness. In all honesty, it's a pointless exercise anyway; rather like those 'Rolling Stone Magazine' Top Ten guitarists of all time lists that they are wont to come up with depressingly often. Who the hell cares and how could you compare, say, Jeff Beck (a favourite of mine) to Segovia or Django Reinhardt or BB King anyway? As you say, listen and enjoy (or not). I think that we need a VAR intervention to arbitrate on the possible promotion of Havergal Brian from League Two to League One!
