@ClassicsAndVinyl Another adventurous upload, Bob. I came to the music of Mathias relatively late in my British explorations and managed to acquire an expensive second hand copy of this LP from, I think, Gramex in Waterloo. Was this actually written for Gervaise de Peyer? Either way, he gives a compelling performance of a beautiful work and is ably supported by the Argo recording. I don't think I ever found any of the recordings on this LP anywhere else so this really was a worthwhile purchase. A fine upload, Sah!

Yes, this was written for Gervase de Peyer and first performed by him (with David Atherton). This performance later appeared on a Lyrita CD (along with Mathias' 3rd Piano Concerto that I posted a while back from a Decca LP). A lovely work, that couldn't be better played or recorded!

@ClassicsAndVinyl -Well, Bob, you've really done it this time! I always think Arnold's symphonies to be hugely under-rated but, thankfully, there are now a few (more or less) complete cycles (another composer with nine symphonies to his name) to do justice to his strong orchestral writing. The 5th, in my opinion, is the jewel in the crown and this is the version to have; the CBSO surpass themselves under the assured guidance of the composer. The symphony also has one of those characteristic, but melancholic, 'big tunes' (second movement) which many English symphonists attempted but failed to achieve; Arnold succeeded seemingly effortlessly and it truly is a memorable tune. Concentration on the 'big tune' would, however, be to miss the wonderful music he wrote for the other movements. That lazy quick tune at the end of the third movement - marvelous! A real gem of a work and this recording of it will not, I think, be surpassed. Magnificent Sah!
@ClassicsAndVinyl22 күн бұрын
Thank you! I'm a relative newcomer to Arnold's "serious" music and there's such a lot to discover. A while back Decca released a (CD) box of Vernon Handley's Conifer recordings of Arnold's symphonies which I got and I was blown away by the range of the music. The writing is so accomplished - no doubt because Arnold was formerly an orchestral player himself. The CBSO at the time was on top form with Louis Frémaux as principal conductor and the EMI engineers knew how to get the best out of the De Montfort Hall in Leicester too. A wonderful collaboration all round!
@tonyobadinage664721 күн бұрын
@@ClassicsAndVinyl Those Handley recordings on Conifer are wonderful, I didn't have them all but those I did have were super. The Andrew Penny set on Naxos is also worthwhile and, being Naxos, are at a bargain price. I can remember I had Charles Groves conducting the RLPO on HMV in the 2nd Symphony. There were also some Lyrita CD released with composer conducting. As far as 20th Century British composers go, I'd put Arnold right up there with William Walton in terms of orchestral writing and I think your assessment is right, his experience as an orchestral player would have been invaluable. He had his demons, I believe, but he was also a great mentor for others. It was he who enthusiastically conducted the RPO in John Lord's 'Concerto for Group and Orchestra' and who defended Deep Purple from the condescending sneers of some members of the orchestra! Add in his film scores and, taken all-in-all, his body of work is very impressive.
@ClassicsAndVinyl18 күн бұрын
@@tonyobadinage6647 Yes, I agree with everything you've said here. It's hard to think of any composer who had a greater command of orchestral colour, and he could certainly write a cracking tune - something that would have been rather looked down upon by the avant garde musical establishment at the time.

the reprocessed stereo sounds a little mushy, i did some experiments with mono recordings recently using a conical stereo stylus and mono defeat switch on my amp, results were diminished interference and surface noise, it worked great on Rock records but Classical didn't really sound very good at all compared to stereo, even old ones. My advice is steer clear of Classical mono (especially these Eclipse recordings) and stick to stereo, even older recordings sound great.

Such an interesting recording. The speed of Mars surprised me but I suppose the conductor should know! Thank you.
@ClassicsAndVinylАй бұрын
Thanks for your comments. A possible reason for the speed of Mars maybe to do with the limitations of the 78rpm sides - set the tempo to get it all in! If that really was the speed Holst had set for Mars then Adrian Boult - who was there right at the work's beginning - would almost certainly have adopted it I think. But this is certainly an interesting recording.
@tonyobadinage6647Ай бұрын
@ClassicsAndVinyl. This release was an absolute corker with the newly rediscovered Adrian Boult showcasing the LPO in a feast of Holst. I love Vaughan Williams but even I have to accept that when it comes to 20th Century British musical geniuses, Britten, Walton and, especially, Holst stand out from the crowd. Holst's eastern stuff is rarely played, the emphasis being on either his 'English' compositions or 'The Planets' (which is semi eastern). This is a masterpiece, however, and his orchestral writing is simply incomparable. Boult gives it the special treatment and the LPO are on top form, all helped by the marvelous Lyrita dynamic - I assume this was one Lyrita's Decca recordings? A truly superb upload, Sah!
@ClassicsAndVinylАй бұрын
As you say - a real corker! And I think all but the very earliest Lyritas were recorded by Decca producers and engineers. Holst has always been saddled with the fact that The Planets outshone everything else he wrote in the minds of "the general public". Which is a real shame as there is so much more of genuine quality and originality.
@tonyobadinage6647Ай бұрын
@@ClassicsAndVinyl I like The Planets but there are works such as this or Psalm 86 (the Ian Partridge version) which appeal to me more. Maybe it's the unfamiliarity of these less popular works which, allied to the risk factor of trying something new, is refreshingly dangerous.

Wonderful, I love Lyrita recordings. Wished they recorded for other composers such as Beethoven,Brahms,Dvorak etc
@ClassicsAndVinylАй бұрын
Lyrita has to be my favourite label! Richard Itter, who founded and ran the label, really only wanted to record British composers who were largely being ignored by the major labels at the time. He left the standard repertoire to others as he knew his small label couldn't hope to compete with EMI and Decca etc, and their "big name" performers. He got agreement with Decca to provide the engineering for his recordings precisely because the repertoire he proposed to record wouldn't overlap with Decca's own recordings. I think the reason that Lyrita is so special is that they found their niche in hitherto neglected British music, recorded wonderfully well by (anonymous) Decca recording teams (you never see the producers and engineers credited on the sleeves - a Decca stipulation!).
