My man! what an achievement, every house is different, and so are their budgets but I'd love a video breaking down the budget, you've mentioned throughout videos how much certain things cost but a collective total of expenses would be very interesting and a video I think many will like, including me

@havesomevision this is a great series. I wonder if you'd feel able to make a short video on how you went about finding the land for your tiny house? I'm based in England and this is something I hope to achieve in the next few years, but am finding it a bit difficult to navigate finding land you can build on etc

Im a 50 year old carpenter and enjoy your attitude and approach , well done on the projects so far . But please start to think about health and safety . Watching you fall and get kick back from saws etc. , on a 20 minutes video means they must be happening a lot. A life changing injury is just that . I mean this in a positive way. A tidy site is a safe site. Best of luck ... cheers Barny

Hi Chris, I’m a 27 year old woman, born in Nigeria, raised in Ireland and I’m on a similar journey to you. Trained as a hospital doctor and hating the grind of public hospitals and call shifts looking for a way to my dream life. Which is a few acres of land, a small house, community and peace. Just got on the property ladder 3 months ago and renovating my first investment property in Dublin City, on my own with every penny I have 😅. Just wanted to say I resonate with a lot of your philosophies, my motto is “Anything you don’t change, you choose”. You’re so inspiring so stay the course!

Hi Chris. About 98% of what goes into a septic tank is water (even poo is 75% water). A septic tank breaks down its contents by natural biological process. The solids sink to the bottom of the tank, while the water runs off into the ground via a soakaway. So it's only the solids that build up in the tank, as a slurry. It therefore takes a long time to fill a septic tank to the point where it needs emptying. I built my own septic tank while building my house. I got the digger guy to dig a large pit while he was doing my landscaping. I poured a concrete slab in the bottom, then built the tank from concrete blocks, with a baffle in the middle. I skimmed the inside with motar+waterproofing mixture. It was about 2 x 3 x 2 metres in size and I topped it with a reinforced concrete slab, with inspection covers, then covered it with soil and backfilled the sides. It was still cheaper than buying a ready-made tank. I've only had it emptied once in 25 years. I dipped it recently and the solids are only about 30cm deep, so I'm in no hurry to get it emptied again. It probably cost me about £500 to build (25 years ago), including the soakaway. That's about £7k saved in sewage charges over 25 years. Keep up the good work.

Uh the soak away as you called it is a leech field, which needs to be properly sized and maintained to properly handle the bacteria laden water that’s running off. I hope you at least consulted a civil engineer and that you have the space on your property for said leech field and that it’s set up properly. One does not just put in a tank and let the water leech into the nearby soil.
@njipods

depends what type you get. they don't all have leach fields. this guy probably won't have one as he's not got enough land.

Planning permission is complicated. If it’s agricultural land, just an acre somewhere in the countryside, you’ve got no little hope unless you can pretend it’s for tourism and then try and get away with it or there’s existing structures on the land (not agri) that makes the last considered as brownfield or previously developed land. People tend to put these on their parents land, you can legally put a caravan within the residential curtilage of the main property if it’s classed as not independent of the main property (in reality it will be). I’d expect he’s not gone through planning for this but could be wrong. You can also build garden sheds etc and again live in it for 10 years without the council realising and you’ve got planning (if you’ve got the right proof). Only other option is one planet wales, but have to on going commit to a way of life

You’ve learned a lot at a young age. I was 38 when I paid off my house and I tell people all the time they have no idea what that feels like. The weird psychological phenomenon that occurs is incredible. To know you’re ok, no one can take it, you own it, you owe no one, you’re free. It’s absolutely the most amazing event someone can have and I wish society just knew how stupid our consumer lifestyle really is. Food is our largest expensive. With just two of us, my wife and I in our mid-40’s with eating out a couple of times a week, we spend a grand to $1500 a month on food. As you know eating healthy is also more expensive than eating crap. Good video! I am in IT with a minor in Finance and I think the more you’re around money (and tech) the more you realize what a game life truly is.

Just love your channel! Get a wood store for seasoning it for a year before you burn it, otherwise your going to get poor burn. We are one septic tank / treatment plant, it is about £250/cubic meter I think we paid last. Oversize the solid chamber then you only need a change once every two years. We are putting in a non electric one in our next place so zero electricity. 😊

Unbelievably inspiring. Hope it all goes well. I've for years wanted to start tiny home and shipping container home business since I was about 16/17. I'm now 32! My life took a different route though, Im a single parent with 2 kids And lost my money into a previous home with the children's mother. Now at the stage where I need a home for me and the kids to start again, having to rent and save is very challenging with kids. I previously have lost 2 jobs, one through covid which I had to take a big juno to get a new job, then prior to that I had been medically discharged in the army. So I've had to readjust a few times to get to where I am today. But still don't feel like I've achieved anything to show for all the hard work. I would love to be able to build a shipping container home that would be sustainable for me and my 2 kids to live comfortably, don't need huge space, just the space to have my little family together with me and some little outside space. Hopefully I can get there one day. But your videos have been truly inspiring and hope you truly take off on KZfaq too, I'm sure you will!

Seek out grants for ex service personnel. Get your vision set out as a scaled plan. Go ask local farmers if they rent out barn space - somewhere to work that's under cover and you can store your tools. Buy a secondhand container and tools and start. Once you have made your own home, look to make others for resale. Before you know it, you'll have your business, your home, your skills, your kids' respect - your self-respect. Go do it. 🎉❤

The containers used to sell for very little if they were used.. depending on size.. like 1K - 3K per container.. and remember you can stack them to make additional levels, not sure how much they go for at today's prices though.. The cool thing about shipping containers though is..the basic building is there right away (once you have a foundation or supports set up) and then kit out the interior, add windows etc. You can do it! Don't look at the whole project which can be overwhelming.. make your plan and do it piece by piece then one day it's all done. Cheers.

Leaving aside your determination and your building skills, your attitude is what will make you a success. To have realised the difference between what you might want and what you need, to know what you NEED to be happy and what makes you miserable. These are realisations which most of us don't have until much later in life. If ever. More strenght to you and the best of luck with everything you do going forward. Wherever you end up you will totally have earned it.

100% agree with all you said. I don't know how tall your ceilings are. IMO for tiny house furnish vertically. Have drawer storage or other storage built into your bed. Instead of having night tables build bookshelf type storage headboard with lighting. Above your head add wall hanging storage or whatever. See what I mean by furnish vertically? The mistake I see tiny house builders make is #1. No front closet and #2 not enough storage to really have a livable space. Sofa/couches (I'm Canadian) can also be made with storage. Ottoman with storage. Front closet should have electric outlets for alarm systems, for plug in stick vacuum, phone charging, and possibly your WIFI. I also think having an external door on your mechanical room for easy service access (but no external handle) is a good idea so service person is not traipsing through your house. Trust me you're going to need a broom in your front closet. To me it's absolute insanity not to have a front closet. BTW...I can't believe you're not wearing workboots nor work gloves. I'm looking forward to the finished house. I saw your 1yr video on the London build. Beautiful... Outstanding

I moved from London to Cornwall 3 years ago to live with my partner. We built a tiny home together using a caravan base. It look a good 9 months to build as we were only doing it at the weekends. One finished we were lucky enough to have access to a small plot of land we rent off a local farmer. We live very minimally with only a compost toilet for our waste. The first miserable Cornish winter was hard but we got through it. We are two years into living on the land now and have just finished building an extension on the side giving us a bigger space for a living room which has made a world of difference. We currently pay £125 a month each for rent and our electricity is free. Our next step is to make an offer to the farmer on the land which we are not far away from doing. The similar point I’m making is you really don’t need much to live, it’s just this crazy society we live in that makes you feel like you do! To answer the question at the start of your video I would definitely prefer the plot of land! Good luck with your tiny home. P.s. we have gone through a lifetimes worth of paperwork regarding planning etc and have found a loophole that will grant you planning rights within 4 years of living in a structure on that land.

Lol its clear the aim was never to keep the London house. It was a flip but for tax purposes of course you lived in it for a bit. Good on you tbh! I hope the next build all goes well.
