In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through why it's important to paint something just for fun and take the pressure off to keep the hobby fresh. I also paint a GIANT TIGER SQUIG. So there is that.

Whenever I'm in a slump or just need to feel like I've accomplished something I paint a skeleton mini. Quick instance gratification even if you just use Contrast you can get a satisfying result with no real "stakes" to add pressure.

Really enjoyed this video - I constantly see questions in mini painting groups - like how do you keep motivated..how do you 'plan' for your mini etc and I always feel a bit inadequate because I pretty much only paint for the sheer joy of putting paint on something. No armies, no competitions, no planning, no overwhelming obligation to try new techniques, or 'get better' - I just paint for the sake of it. It's good to know that you can be serious about this hobby and yet still appreciate that it's not all about an end product.

Sometimes I feel like, with videos like this one, I could just hear you talking about the project you are painting, and your excitement alone would be enough to fire my up for some painting time. It is kind of contagious xD Obviously, watching the mini get painted also helps, but I just wanted to share that is always a pleasure to hear you talking about the hobby. Thanks for another great video Vince!

Hey Vince, I just wanted to thank you. I am a 38 year old guy painting minis at home and having a blast with it. Painting Minis isn't for competition for me. It mostly isn't for gaming either. I do play sometimes but very rarely (around 2-6 times a year). I paint to paint! To be creative! To make something I am proud of! And other people tell me I am even good at painting. The process of painting is relaxing, fun and meditative. When others watch TV, I paint miniatures. The process is the goal in itself. The fun of the hobby is doing it. And as I have coordination problems since birth, praise from others feels especially good. My starting conditions were worse than other's were so I especially appreciate if others like my work and feel very happy about it. And you made that possible. I learned from others the standard technique (Base Coats, Washes, Highlights) and it never worked for me. I took hours and hours and put 40 hours into my first miniature and it wasn't fun. And even though my first mini looks really decent (many people don't believe it was my first but I kept fuzzing around with it until it was actually a good paint job), it took me over 40 hours for one. And then I found your channel and your guide to work with zenithal priming and transparent colors. And then it all fell into place. Today I mainly paint with glazes and Contrast paints over preshaded models and paint around 100-200 miniatures a year. And I love it! And I got there because of your videos! So yes, I think a thank you is in order! And as Julie states here in the comments: I also don't paint for competitions, I don't feel the need to "be the best" or to "improve at all cost". I simply paint the miniatures to the standard I am satisfied with and that's it. Of course when doing something a lot, you will get better and I like to explore some new options and techniques (for example I did my first snow bases a short time ago, but I don't feel the need or pressure to improve. I simply want to have my fun with my minis. And it works! So thank you again for giving me the techniques for having the most fun with my miniature painting and thus giving me the opportunity to have most wonderful hobby in my life!

I don't play any tabletop games nor will I ever enter a competition. I paint as it is extremely fun and stress relieving. I bought a resin printer and painting was the logical next step. Yet another great tutorial with lots of content….but I have to admit that my favorite/important parts of this video are the “have fun” and the “jarring” comment that you are under a lot of stress pointing an army…somehow, you are always so relaxed in your presentations that statement had me doing a double-take (in a good way). So thank you once again for an excellent video and for the priceless reminders you include within the show!

I just did some tiger stripes on 15mm scale helicopters. I may have even used the same stock photo. I decided to have fun by using a blue color instead of orange. As I laid down the stripes I did not like the contrast of black with blue, so I flipped the stripes to a red tone. It has been a fun project.

I haven't owned any space marine models since the 4th edition starter set "Battle for Macragge" I got as a kid. I recently picked up the smallest 40k starter box with no ambition of turning either part into an army. Painting little Ultramarine guys with no time pressure, lining every edge, making gradients everywhere, decals, as much battledamage and dust as I want and so on, has been weirdly satisfying and relaxing. Two weeks in and im only working on the second marine, yet I for some reason this little project has completely put the feeling of impending backlog doom on hold, and i'm very ok with that. I'm excited for the Lieutenant! Great video, it really hit at the right time for me.

I painted the tiger for scythe and learning it paint tiger stripes was very fun. Its one of those things that we know it if it looks wrong but we don't necessarily know why it's wrong. Also, without looking, I wouldn't have been able to tell you what colour a tigers tail is. I'd assume orange, but no, white with black stripes. That sort of 'really learning what an animal looks like closely' is very gratifying

Another great.....yet humbling....video, Vince. Your "for fun" project is better than anything I have ever done! Ha. But the overall message of the video resonated tremendously. Been too caught up in "public" futures for my potential projects and thus have found myself stymied and accomplishing nothing. As usual, your videos have a touch of Zen about them, and regardless of my current project, I find that leveling and a great "sanity check." Thanks!!

This resonated with me since as of now, my painting is all I have to keep my mind off of things in general. I've been having technical difficulties with my airbrush the last couple days and it's been really ticking me off since what's on deck right now I was hoping to airbrush the skin (it's an ogre from Reaper Bones Black, so skin is the majority of it). Until I get those issues resolved (airbrush only spraying air, nothing else) it's going to have to be hand brushing, and I don't know why I've not been able to just buckle down and do it?! Good work as always, sir!

@@VinceVenturella Thank you, sir! I did just that last night, I busted out the brushes and actually took it up a notch by making myself roll a d100 to choose 3 random paints, no metallics/inks/washes allowed a la Ninjon, and it got me inspired in no time flat. Thankfully I also got three colors that are playing nicely so far with each other (though there is also pure black and pure white on the palette for saturation/desaturation purposes).

Great video. "I'd never really tried that yellow brown recipe on teeth before" - this served the same purpose for you as a sketchbook, or a writer's freewriting journal. Letting your creativity loose after doing so many technical or goal driven projects is not only freeing, but also becomes self expression. A pro artist maintaining a balance between work and play can in the long run be good for their mental health and make them more productive by not falling prey to a burnout that can ruin habits.

I will say this for myself and I am aware this is a very unpopular opinion. The most fun I have is when I paint for competitions. I personally view competitions as something, especially if I have a rival or 10, that forces me to try to go way out of my comfort zone in order to stay competitive. The pieces I participated in competitions with are those where I tried the most intricate patterns, the fancy fancy blends and light effects, the unusual tints and whacky bases. I personally only paint for the heck of it. I have armies and I do think I will enjoy the game but I don't really play. To me, having this amazing looking army and characters is the primary drive, while the possibility of using it for something else is secondary. Coupled with lacking all the time I would wish for painting, especially big armies, as well as lacking an airbrush, to me the process makes it all worth it. As a result, the thrill I feel when I have to beat my own standards somehow to stay competitive is the biggest joy there is to my painting. People really appreciate it, I challenge myself and as a result tend to advance massive leaps and bounds (I am a concept-based kind of fellow, where the thinking, decisionmaking and theory for the composition, materials, etc. are much more important than the technique in itself) and have fun with my peers, whose works I respect. I may not be some master and probably hold no candle to a proper international competition painter (and really suck at taking photos), but for my locals I know pretty much all the good painters there and love the struggle, with each having to keep up the game for the top places. Painting should be fun.

I paint rando AoS models to de-stress. But one thing i'd like to add, if you're finding yourself with more stress than anything else - deactivate/pause your social media accounts. I've found by doing just that, i've been able to let go of mostly all of the line items that cause stress around this hobby, and just let it be what it is, in the privacy of your own home, and without that massive boulder of self-doubt and etc, that might be residing upon your shoulders. Hobby time is about you, and the model. Fuck what the rest of the world does, or thinks.

@@VinceVenturella What i mean by that, is avoiding all the negativity in the hobby, surrounding GW. It easier to avoid on KZfaq, whereas its prominent via any hobby/fan group on social media. Its nice to see what everyone is working on, but if you dig into the comments, you'll see what i'm talking about. The way you handle it via your Warhammer Weekly show is pretty decent though. Its not toxic.

This is like the Bob Ross of miniature painting. Almost like a Zen painting method. I have a similar fig for the Warcry game that I went with a Tiger pattern on and it came out good. Same idea as you, kept just pushing in colors and not worrying about it. It was a tiger goat model so it was just fun to paint. I have more Daler Rowney inks now and love playing with them but I tend to seal them a lot to not reactivate them. Did you seal it before you did a specific step?

Great video again. I picked Gitz for my first army (after playing Underworlds and Warcry) so I could paint lots of squigs. I started airbrushing a few months ago and have a general question, what adjustments do you make when when getting in close to the model? I recently realized I have been keeping the airbrush about 12 inches from the model.

Hey Vince, I'm sorry if this is in another video but what primer (black) do you use, usually? I've found that now that I've learned from Vallejo how to use their surface primer (multiple, generously thinned coats, spaced by about 15-20 mintues) they are incredibly resilient (no sanding), and preserve a lot of detail. Do you have a favorite? Something tells me you're a Stynylrez man, but I can't be sure. Also, and sorry for a two parter, do you know the difference between acrylic resin varnishes and polyurethane varnishes? I've been led to believe the polyurethane are stronger, but for our mini painting purposes, does it make a difference in respect to longevity and protective properties? (I ask because i've been painting for about 5 years, and I want to actually start playing the games; I have lots of pretty nicely painted miniatures that usually have AK ultramatte, and I worry if its got enough chutzpah to protect their paintjobs). Thank you for everything you do for the community, I really appreciate your hard work!
