Hey there guys!
Molina here with another commonly asked question for you all. I know everyone wonders about the little things (or at least I know I definitely did before joining) and one of those was if I could wear my contacts throughout boot camp. From boot camp to after graduation and now actually being active duty in the navy I have learned the answers to most questions on glasses, contacts and corrective surgery info! So here's what I've learned since being in. Enjoy loves.

The only thing that’s scaring me from joining is not being able to wear my contacts i hate glasses because my prescription is so strong they give me a headache 😒

How does glasses and contacts differ in terms of headache inducing? Wouldn’t they be the same prescription?

@@MitchtopiaTechnologies Sometimes the prescription isn’t the issue, the way they sit on your face/ how far away they sit from your eyes can cause dizziness and headaches.

At reception what test do they run for vision? Color blind and chart? I wear glasses.

I have astigmatism and myopia in both eyes, the diopters in my right eye add up To -8 and in my left -7.25. Would I be disqualified at MEPS if I tried to enlist? Just want to know because I’ve always wanted to join, but if my vision is gonna be a barrier I’ll look into getting an ICL eye surgery.

mine are broken and im worried that i wont be able to see thing from far distance like reading a sign, do they make you read anything from far away at bootcamp

Well, my meps is coming soon. And I have to wear hard contacts( not the same as regular contacts) do you think I'll pass without them? I don't have them yet and meps is this week

So I’m enlisting in early June, delayed entry, and while contacts aren’t an issue (I’m allergic to latex) but for things like graduation and instances where I’d be doing navy things but not in uniform? If that would ever happen for any reason? Can I wear my own glasses? The military issue ones are ugly as hell and make me feel like I’m a 60 year old man, which isn’t a concern during actual work, but definitely not something I’d like for 24/7 use.

So during boot camp you will not be allowed to wear contacts other than on graduation day. However, once in the navy you are allowed to wear glasses that are either issued to you or within regulation. Usually these limit faddish looks and crazy colors or design, but depending on how strict others around you are is what will usually determine if you could wear it. Some sailors are more strict on what looks are or aren't within regulations so it all depends, which is why the ones given out are so simple and in my opinion not the prettiest, but they are so simple that they wont stray from regulation.

I have anxiety and cannot bare not seeing without contacts. Will I be able to first show up wearing contacts? And then they will check my eyes and issue me new glasses so I can function in that fast order or will I need to throw my contacts pretty much as soon as i get there in "reception week"? I dont want to be without contacts or glasses in any time and am ok with the Military gives you but unsure if i will be blind lol

So they don't want you to arrive in contacts, but if you do they will ask you to throw them out and put on your own prescription glasses. During your processing days (or P- Days) you'll be wearing your own glasses and they will give you all your shots, get your vision and hearing tested and will issue you your first pair of military glasses based on your prescription. Once you get those glasses they will require you to wear those for the rest of boot camp so everyone is uniform. HOWEVER for graduation day ONLY they did allow contact users to wear contacts, so if you want to bring an extra pair with the personal stuff you plan on keeping definitely do so. Just know you only get to wear them on graduation day and not during actual boot camp.

Bryanna Molina i have a question, if a recruit has extremely crappy eye sight ( without prescription glasses ) but it is corrected with prescription glasses will that recruit be able to continue on in training or will they be seperated ?

@@stevenmajicmike well, they give u an eye exam when you get there along with ur shots and dental exam. Then they give you military glasses of you need them

Please make a video after you get eye surgery. I’m a contacts person and heard that you have to wear these big goggles in the military. Also, after boot camp do they allow you to wear contacts then? Or do you still have to wear glasses.

I still haven't been lucky enough to have any offered eye surgeries, but hopefully i will be able to before my time in the Navy ends! And you can absolutely wear contacts once your out! However, I do not know if this is also the same if your actually on a ship. I imagine it wouldn't be a problem but it would be something you'd find out while on your ship.

can u wear glasses/goggles during swim/pool day in boot-camp? like i cannot imagine swimming with blurry vision at all

So you'll be allowed to wear your glasses to swim (on the walk, while you change into your bathing suit, on the walk to the pool and into your designated line to begin actually swimming) BUT once you get all the way to the diving board and are next in line you'll be told to put your glasses into your inner short pocket. I have extremely bad vision and I still put my glasses away and swam through the pool pretty easily. It definitely not the best part of boot camp, but in a few cases such as swim or firefighting (because you have to wear a face mask) you wont be able to wear your glasses.

I'm nervous about the Vision test at MEPS, Like my left eye is kinda blur but my right eye is completely fine, u think i will pass the vision test?

Same here. My right eye has scarring (which can be corrected by surgery) but I don't usually wear glasses at all but I just had to get them for my driver's test. (Even though I don't need them to see while I drive) I'm hoping I don't have to wear the big blocky glasses but after boot and graduation I'm sure you can wear contacts. Just definitely don't wear them in boot.

Can you wear your own glasses in A school or do you have to wear the ones they issued you?

A school can either be very strict or a tad more lax compared to boot camp depending on which school you go to, the base you're on and your instructors and school house policies. For my school we were allowed to wear our own glasses, but they had to be 'in regs'. According to regulations glasses can't be 'faddish (so anything that is flashy, or a style that is considered to be 'in' style meaning something that is not 'traditional') so it limits what you can wear and usually just allows simple all black glasses without anything too different or loud. So technically yes you can (as long as they fit the rules) and most won't give you a hard time for wearing your own glasses but there are some by the book fellow service members who might push for uniformity and will prefer military issued glasses or super simple ones if they are your own.

I have met a few MM's and they tend to definitely be at work a lot. It requires a lot of in person, hands on work and is a crucial part of a running ship or sub.

Yes and it was rough, because I have terrible eye sight so firefighting classes and things where you cant wear them throughout, were difficult and stressful, but you get through it.

Can you go active duty with a child in the Navy with a family care plan ?

I honestly don't have any kids so I don't know the process of getting in, going to boot camp and being active duty with children. I do know people who do have kids prior to the joining and have gone in and through boot cam p and are active duty, so I'm sure the avenues are reachable. I would definitely suggest talking to a recruiter or someone who is active duty and entered when they already had a family.
