We got a united Ireland anyway….joke!…….not that long after that, it was a revamped Stormont that was accepted, not sure what the alternative was…….Ireland and Northern Ireland is the common parlance now….

@@runningamok2825 we will see, you’d wonder could same have been achieved with a mass peaceful movement, considering the amount of republican feeling in the south in the 70s, one for the historians…..

@@RaeKearns Agreed on the mass peaceful movement prospect. We know how the war went - long and costly to all involved. An interesting counterfactual to explore at a minimum. However, I really believe unionist politicians created the war by beating peaceful civil rights protestors off the street while Ian Paisley's finest ran around blowing up power stations in false flag attacks to blame the IRA and coup the reformist unionist wing out of power. The nationalist community did not introduce the gun to the political situation of the late 60s. I wish it would have stayed peaceful and achieved gains too. I think most of the nationalists wanted that too and the militant argument had more teeth after 71/72 outrages by the BA. For a few years it was basically the only argument left. Took a long time for people to come around to alternatives to war.

@@runningamok2825 take the point about the unionists, think though part of the ‘Provisionals’, strategy was to harass and provoke the Brits into retaliatory action, thus radicalising the nationalist communities or enough of them to sustain a war of liberation to complete the unfinished business of 1922, a few angry young men with bruised heads found a ready vehicle to expunge their anger on the state, I’m saying this as an ex participant.
