I'm continuing the early work redesigning my small Hawthorn bonsai. A deciduous bonsai redesign can take many seasons, especially drastic work that involves completely re-building the branches and apex from scratch. In this video I carry out post-chop branch selection, some carving to add natural detail to the deadwood hollows, and I also ask for your advice on pot selection.

The trunk is really cool, I think you did a good job hollowing it! It will be a very nice tree when it has more ramification.

Nice trunk, it will be a great tree when the canopy develops. I’d probably say pot 2 is what I’d go for. It also looks like you have a few treats hiding at the back of your garden by the shed, can’t wait to see what’s down there

Haha I'll have to check the video again to see what there was! To be honest it's mostly stuff I'm growing on either for mame/shohin, graft scions, or stuff I experiment on. Thanks for watching :D

Pot 2, also id tilt the tree forward a little so the apex is more over the center of the tree if not even a slight lean forward, it would help been able to see more into the hollow as well once tilted.

I’ve done a bit of backyard yamadori and I usually rub off the low growing buds when they appear. Any benefit to letting them grow wild as you’ve done here? Thanks
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 5 жыл бұрын
In the post-collection recovery period I personally wouldn’t remove any growth. On a healthy tree with primary branches in place I rub out unwanted buds. With this tree I let it grow to give me future options for grafting, but in all honesty the obviously unwanted buds could have been removed before they extended, it just got away from me. And once they started oh boy did they go for it! Once they were growing I decided to wait until they had hardened to let the tree gain some energy from its investment 😀 So I guess for me it depends on the tree and what I’m doing with it...

Hi Darren, as you know I am still catching up with your videos and so I am six months late on this. I haven't read your viewers comments but I wondered if you had considered "approach grafting" on of the vigourous branches into the spot where you are hoping for a bud?

The striation on pot no. 2 goes subtly well with the trunk bark, the dark grey pot will also highlight the whitish bark. The pot no. 1 is too dark & too distracting.
