My older sister drove me and my younger brother in to see that game. We found spare seats just around from the Collingwood cheer squad. Amazed that 92,000 could cram into an all seater stadium with a 70,000 capacity. Great atmosphere, but leaving in our light blue Datsun 180B took hours. The game went as long as the time it took to get us home up Springvale Road to Box Hill. Thanks for sharing this! Keep these little gems coming!!!

We contemplated driving to VFL Park for this game, but changed our minds on the saturday morning; glad we did too.

The last cars only left from VFL Park in 1999.

If you kept every single car from that day and sold them today you'd have 1,000,000,000,000 dollars. Maybe more if there was a GTHO or 2.

Tim Mackie Oh god that must be a nightmare. That obviously means you don't go to the footy that often. I wouldn't be bothered with a three hour drive every weekend.

great idea building a stadium there - you could walk there in less than 40 minutes if you lived in Mulgrave
@darrenmiles-morland8038 Жыл бұрын
You could walk there in 20 minutes if you drove your car to the nearby Waverley Gardens Shopping Center and parked it in the carpark there. It was free parking at the shopping center too. No-one would even know that you'd gone to the footy game while it was parked there.

Terrible ground without any atmosphere in the middle of nowhere. Thanks Kenneth Luke.

@TruBluHeeler A fair way but it was also as much as it not having a train line. They could see in the 50s that the area was going to increase in population so thought it an ideal place for their base. Concrete monstrosity plonked in the middle of nowhere with negligible public transport and right in the middle of a rain belt.
@jecos19662 жыл бұрын
@TruBluHeeler You got the Primers of Victoria that were MCC members for that they were going to have a train to Rowville then a bus to VFL park all under the one public transport ticket
@darrenmiles-morland8038 Жыл бұрын
Don't blame Kenneth Luke, blame premier of Victoria John Cain. Kenneth Luke had a vision to build a 157,000 capacity stadium that would have had multi level grandstands going entirely around its perimeter, not just in the spot where the Sir Kenneth Luke Stand stood. He also had a vision for a railway line to be built to Rowville that would service the ground. John Cain and his government canned all of those plans. John Cain was a member of the MCC who saw VFL Park as a major threat to having the Grand Final taken away from the MCG and moved there. Cain also quashed plans to build a railway line to Rowville, which still hasn't been built to this very day.

@@darrenmiles-morland8038 Ask yourself tho, why would Melbourne need the Maracana 2.0 in the middle of Glen Waverley? And were Luke and Cain on the Same Side, i.e. that against the taxpayer?
