I enjoyed this adaptation overall. I agree that they captured today's high school experience well. The addition of social media/smartphones makes all the drama soo much messier! I also think they did a good job at choosing people who look like they could still pass for high-school age, unlike in the original movie. Renee absolutely killed it. Best member of the cast, hands-down. But honestly the casting choices were all pretty solid. I do think they should have chosen a stronger singer for Cady. Also didn't get/enjoy the scene for Someone Gets Hurt. It was so long and the artistic choices were weird. It's also not clear at all how Regina got Aaron to take her back 🤔🧐 And at the end, Regina didn't actually apologize to anyone. I've seen the stage musical and I don't recall if she does in that version or not. But Karen, Gretchen and especially Janice deserved an apology.

Idk I think Janice lost her right to an apology when she got revenge instead 🤷🏻‍♀️ She even says in the movie - they got even. Gretchen deserves the biggest apology imo 😭

Cady’s actress actually isn’t American and has an accent so she had to mask that even in singing which toned her down sadly

I like *some* of the decisions in this movie. I actually think the "TikTok" scenes, while they definitely date the movie immediately, were actually a pretty inspired decision. The biggest problems are 1) They adjusted song compositions to make up for weak singers, and 2) The movie was paced waytoofast, and I feel like it relied very heavily on having seen the original to know what was going on at all. I had a hard time connecting with the characters, which is a death sentence for a musical. The thing had so much potential since I love both the original movie and the musical, it just missed the mark for me. You say you heard the original cast recording of this musical already so you may have seen more than the average person. But just in case any of it slipped by you, there's Wonka, Matilda: The Musical, In The Heights, Tick Tick Boom, and Inside which are all from the past few years and absolutely fantastic. Then there's older ones that wouldn't get too many views but might still be fun, like Little Shop of Horrors, Hairspray, and Reefer Madness. And if you ever do series reactions (again, will probably get no views and be even more work so probably no shot lol), I adore Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Schmigadoon

Old fogey here who was in 9th grade when the original movie came out, and can confirm: those cliques definitely existed, although I'm pretty sure the media that kept PUSHING those cliques made it worse. Glad you reacted to this, because I didn't like the original movie enough to want to watch this, but it was interesting to see pieces of it.

You guys should react to Hazbin Hotel! The voice of Charlie is Erika Henningsen, the original Broadway Cady! As for other movie musicals, here are my recommendations- Hairspray (the 2007 version) Rent Hamilton Sweeney Todd Chicago Into the Woods (the original Broadway cast version) Grease Dreamgirls The Sound of Music Little Shop of Horrors Legally Blonde the Musical (I believe the whole thing is on KZfaq) Rocky Horror Picture Show Cats (just because I think it would be hilarious to see your reactions) Cabaret Pitch Perfect Also, it’s not a movie musical, but I’d love to see you two react to the original “Heathers” film. 😊

I second _Hazbin Hotel_ I think Hayley and Stella would definitely enjoy this adult animated musical and the voice cast is impressive, but I definitely think they should watch the Pilot episode before doing the series. Finally besides the Musical films you mentioned, the both of them should react to- _West Side Story_ (both the 1961 and 2021 versions respectively) _Les Miserables_ _Into the Heights_ _The Greatest Showman_

@@glory1356 i mean, it wouldn’t just be her choice, but yeah. Angourie Rice is a really great actress, but you can tell that she isn’t a trained vocalist. there were a lot of choices made with this movie in an attempt to make it appeal to a broader audience. the guy they got as aaron samuels being a perfect example. aaron (while he doesn’t sing a ton in the musical) does have solos, but they chose to cast a well-known actor who’s popular with the choice demographic and can’t sing. i have all the respect to Tina Fey and the rest of production, and as a whole the movie isn’t a bad adaptation, but i personally feel that they missed the mark on a few things.

@@daytonnicholson4879 i agree -- cady has an intense vocal track in the show, equally as difficult as regina in my opinion. she doesn't have the really high notes or the flashy riffs, but she's singing almost the whole show, and most of the songs are very belty and require a lot more range than what angourie was able to deliver. who knows though, the producers clearly wanted a poppy "streamable" sound for the songs so it's possible angourie can actually belt but they didn't want her to.

I have little to say about this movie as I'm ambivalent to it, but the reaction was good! No, the cliques shown in Mean Girls weren't even remotely real in 2004. They were exaggerations of already movie-exaggerated cliques which half-existed when you went far back enough in time, based largely on sporting prowess or wealth - but even then it gets overstated a lot. Bring on the musical reactions! Try and go a little rogue, as there are quite a few people don't react to very often...

I feel like Mean Girls doesn't work in 2024 because everyone is so much more accepting of each other's quirks. I went to high school in the very early 2000s, and if you didn't fit the exact norm of what a 'regular' person was, you got bullied for whatever your difference was. I feel like the paradigm has shifted to the point of reversing itself, to where now, being different is the goal rather than the obstacle to surmount - stripping someone like Regina of the power she wielded in a 2004 high school scenario.

I can't speak for 2004 high school as I was still in elementary, but by the time I did (2007 -2011) cliques weren't really a thing. Most "jocks" were also into nerd shit, and most "nerds" also did sports. Some of the "popular" girls were also straight-A students and were generally nice. It's part of why I've never related to most high school situations in most media. Also by the late 2000s teens were already getting pretty tech savvy. We were already starting to use our phones a whole lot, and using them to film stuff wasn't out of the ordinary. Granted, I grew up in Hawaii, and I've always got the impression that high school on the mainland was different in some ways. Also, speaking of Hawaii, Auliʻi is pronounced like "Ow-lee (short pause) ee"

I honestly am not very familiar with the main cast except for Tina Fey (Ms. Norbury) and Tim Meadows (Mr. Duvall) who each played the same character in the 2004 movie, along with Auli'i Cravalho (pronounced OW-Lee-ee Cruh-VAL-eyo) from Moana. I've seen Reneé Rapp's name but haven't really listened to her music. She has an amazingly powerful voice and I think she did a great job (Sidenote: She reminds me a lot of actress AnnaLynne McCord from the remake of the TV show Beverly Hills 90210). Regina felt more evil and manipulative in this one while Rachel McAdams' version was more mean and fake, if that makes sense. But I can't even imagine having to live up to that iconic performance. Or Lindsay Lohan's for that matter. Angourie Rice (pronounced Ang-OW-ree) was okay as Cady and I like her soft voice but she was kind of bland and I didn't find her very believable as the bitchy Cady, especially because it happened so sudden. Auli's as Janis, Jaquel as Damian and Avantika as Karen were incredible (though Janis as a character wasn't as strong or likable in my opinion). I didn't really feel much with the actress portraying Gretchen or the actor portraying Aaron though. I don't know what it is, I just like them better in the original. I also felt no chemistry between Aaron & Regina or Aaron & Cady. I felt more chemistry between Regina & Cady and even Cady & Janis. I do like that they kept a lot of the iconic lines and I actually miss a few (like "So if you're from Africa, why are you white?"), but some of them don't hit as hard. I think overall they did a good job at keeping it similar but not the exact same. Now, I haven't seen the musical so I don't know if some of it is taken from that (except for the songs). I think Janis and Damian are supposed to be narrating and they consistently break the 4th wall in the movie. I personally love when movies and shows are self-aware like that. But I can see how some people don't like how they shot the musical performances since it was more like different music videos than a musical. As someone who is not from the US, I've always wondered how accurate the portrayal of high schoolers is in these movies. Obviously it's exaggerated but from what I've heard it's pretty common to have cliques like that. It's a lot different in Iceland where I'm from. Sure, everyone has their own friend group and there's definitely a problem with bullying but it's not like THAT. When I went to school I went there to study and see my friends, that's it. There wasn't this desperate need to be "popular" and we also don't have jocks or cheerleaders (thank God). But with bullying, I feel like girls are definitely more backstabbing and manipulative while boys generally tend to be more violent and aggressive. Some fun facts: There are several instances of costume references to the original. Many of Ms. Norbury's outfits pay homage to it, including a vest and the polka dot shirt. While Karen is looking through outfits, there is a brief shot of the white tank top and purple bra outfit with the holes that Regina made trendy. Cady's revenge party outfit is similar to that of the original house party outfit. Regina's mum also wears a pink tracksuit like she did in the original. 14 songs from the musical were cut for the movie but almost all the songs in the movie are from the musical. Cady's first song What Ifs (co-written by Reneé Rapp) replaced It Roars. The reprise of Stupid With Love is performed by Cady and Aaron in the musical but in the movie it is performed by Cady, replacing Do This Thing (Kevin's use of the word "squills" is a reference to that song). During the gym scene when Ms. Norbury appears to be about to sing, the music is Where Do You Belong?, Damian's cut song from the musical. Only a short snippet of Rockin' Around the Pole is in the musical (replacing Jingle Bell Rock in the original). Janis and Karen's last names were changed to reflect the backgrounds of the actresses playing them. Janis's last name was Ian in the movie (a reference to At Seventeen singer Janis Ian) and Sarkassian in the musical but in this movie it's Imi'Ike because Auli'i Cravalho is Hawaiian. Karen's last name was changed from Smith to Shetty because Avantika is Indian. Mr. Duvall is seen wearing a cast throughout the movie as a joke, since in the original he had it in the second part of the movie because Tim Meadows had broken his hand prior to filming.

The OG Movie Is Better, But I Must Say The Music In This Movie Is Bopping

Watched this movie and thought it was so inferior to the original, but still serviceable and fun if you take the original film out of your brain. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me is Janis’ song in the gymnasium. It made NO SENSE AT ALL for her character. Uhm.. JANIS IS A MEAN GIRL. She’s like a Regina George without the glam and the power. I adore the actress who played Janis and her voice is out of this world amazing but her portrayal of Janis totally turned me off from this remake. And the costume design is ABYSMAL!!!

I actually loved this movie. It had its flaws but I thought it was so fun, and as someone who saw the og movie and the musical, I think it did a decent job combining elements of both. And it is giving Ms Renee Rapp her MOMENT so I’m here for it

This is kinda like Hairspray. First a movie, then a musical based on the movie, and then a movie version of the musical.

Funny thing is that for the longest time I thought the Musical of _Hairspray_ came first before the Movie Musical adaptation, and I didn’t even knew about the original Hairspray movie that came out in 1987/1988.

Seeing the burn book in a modern day movie with social media is so crazy to me. Like, back in the 80s/ 90s (in the Chicago suburbs where the story takes place) there REALLY were burn books/ slam books. They were a common well known trend that started in elementary school. But they weren’t personal secret journals. They were the precursor to the comment sections on the internet and internet bullying. Lots of people would make one. They took a notebook and on every page put a name from their class or grade. Then they got passed around. When you got one you were supposed to write anonymous comments under each name, saying what you REALLY thought about them. Some were really cruel, but some were secret confessions of crushes/ compliments. Not only did you write your comments, but you read what others before you put. And what people put about you. Then you passed it on. There were usually several going around at once. When the first mean girl movie came out I laughed because the writers (who grew up in the 80s/ 90s) changed it. They made it personal so the big reveal later would have plot impact. I got why they did it, but it also was a little weird to me, because it was hard to imagine kids going to the trouble of making a private burn book just to have? Just for themselves? Why not just say mean things to your friends? Why write it down? But in reality when social media was invented and public comment sections were used for anonymous bullying, that was REALLY the modern day burn book. And now a film in a time with actual social media but a private burn book, that is “accidentally” found instead of publicly posted through flyers like the first film. I assumed they would use social media to spread it, (instead of flyers,) but then went another way? Let it be found then spread on its own? I find the whole evolving concept fascinating. 🤷‍♀️😂

Hollywood seriously needs to stop making sequels of classics and reboots. They’re just cash grabs. Every single time. Use your damn writers and make new stuff.

she is a good actress, but i dont think she was right for this role, not her fault, but the movie suffered because they had to adapt the songs to be less energetic to fit her range

This movie trying to be “of the times” is a messy process. The 2004 film was written by women who were teens in the 90s and the movie had a 90s feel despite being set in 2004. Then the musical debuted in 2017 so was probably written in 2015 ish? But tried to build on the 2004 film? And now this film is trying to be 2024 but built on the 2017 musical? Honestly, the vibes are all over the place. I don’t think we should think too hard about how accurate it is of the “teen” experience. 😂

You’d love it! The stage sets are amazing, the songs are bangin’, the performances are incredible! It stars David Bedella as Frank, Ben Forster as Brad, Haley Flaherty as Janet. Guest narrators were Anthony Head, Emma Bunton, and the legendary Stephen Fry! 😱🥳🙌 also special narration by the guy who wrote it, Richard O’Brian 🥳🤠😎🙌

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a good musical. Despite the name, at times it's an uncomfortably accurate depiction of mental illness. And the comedic parts have a manic edge or a subtextual acknowledgement that what the characters are doing is messed up, which makes it gel with the serious parts. It is a TV show, though, so a big commitment for a reaction channel.

I quite liked this adaptation despite the OMG being more iconic. I did love the musical numbers and to me Regina, Janis, and Damian stole the entire film!!! I really do wish we could’ve heard Damian do Stop, but I was glad he at least got his boyfriend. Yes the bathroom scene was deleted in the original, so I was glad they kept it. My favorite songs is obviously Revenge Party, Apex Predator, I’d Rather Be Me and all of Regina George’s songs especially I Want To Watch The World Burn. 👚👄💄🫦💋📒🩷💖💝
