So episode 1 and 2 of hazbin hotel have finally released. This video will be a little different from my reviews on helluva boss. Instead of doing a synopsis like usual, i’ll instead jump right into the things i liked and disliked. Since hazbin is releasing in batches of 2 i’ll cover episode 1 and 2 in this video, and then do episode 3 and 4 once they release on the 19th. The first segment will be on episode 1, the second segment on episode 2, and then i’ll finish off with some concluding thoughts.
Video Chapters:
00:00 Intro
00:24 Episode 1
03:41 Episode 2
06:20 Conclusion
06:46 End Screen

I love how Valentino is portrayed. He's just a temperamental little baby who screams if he diesnt get his way, and then switches and tries to apologize. I bet its how he was able to draw Angel in to begin with, and I love that Vox treats him like the childish baby he is, and is the true leader of the Vs.

The scene with Adam hits really different when you're a woman, I think. It's profoundly well-written. If you're focusing on _what_ Adam is saying, and not on _why_ he is saying it, then you're missing the entire layer of subtext as to what's actually going on. It's one of those scenes I could write an entire essay on, and all of the things it tells us about Charlie and her background and who she is.

You have a point there, I didn't think that it might even hit a little too close to home for the dudes out there to feel comforable with the character. 😄 I absolutely loved Alex Brightman's Adam. yeah like i don’t think that adam was a “rewrite of chaz” simply because i actually liked his character and i hated chaz. i think adam swearing is supposed to be seen as ironic as he’s from heaven yet he talks like he’s from hell. it also symbolizes that heaven isn’t what it seems and that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. adams an egotistical prick because he was the “first man” which explains why he behaves this way. he is also in charge of the extermination and since he’s in hell so often, i feel like he sees it as having free will to behave how he’d like. i can’t wait to see him later in the show and i hope he gets another song because i really like “hell is forever”

@@mikedebakker5820I 100% agree with this. I am a casual watcher of Vivzie’s work and I barely knew much abt Velvette or Vox prior to the show apart from their designs so I never held an expectation for them. Thus, I didn’t get whiplash hearing Velvette have a British accent and the whole accent thing with Valentino seems to be intentional so I don’t mind it either. It’s almost like he’s trying to put on this act for people to get what he wants which is where he has the accent while his true nature is a piece of shit, I think it’s cool conveying that through his voice since tone of voice does play a big role in how people perceive each other. @@Salza02 It's possible that it could've been an act, but I wouldn't count on it. Of course Adam is gonna be cocky and egotistical, but that can be expressed without excessive swearing. And I'm also hoping that Heaven won't be bad just because they're the opposite of Hell, if that makes sense? I want them to show that just like how not everyone in Hell is the same, not everyone in Heaven is the same either. I want to see the 'bad' people in Heaven be not explicitly bad, but more along the lines of being judgy and pious, with a holier-than-thou attitude, since that would honestly be more accurate, if being raised Christian is anything to go by. But we still have 4 more episodes to potentially show that, so there's hope.

@@Salza02 it's very likely an Act because of end of the episode. For an egotistical and very stupid show he puts on, he isn't impulsive with Lute who is so calm and collective is far more impulsive and emotion driven than him. It also makes sense the guy probably doesn't know the politics of hell very well and likely assumes Charlie you know Lucifer's daughter and the Princess of hell has some political pull and could create a defense or start a second rebellion against heaven. I thought the power-dynamic between the Vees was exactly what it needed to be. We saw mostly Valentino thanks to the comics and Addict, as well as Paranoid DJ's version of him, so I can understand a lot of fans thinking he would be the most powerful and the leader, but we never really got to know the other two so much. I always though that they should be equally powerful in their own areas. I expect we'll see each one take the 'Lead' over the other two over the course of the series, depending on the situation.

I like the "hidden threat" concept - you don't know much about a character but get easter eggs as to their true motives and power throughout the series. I get where a lot of fans are coming from with the Valentino criticism - older fans were familiar with Paranoid DJ's voice which is more raspy, suave and intimidating and lends itself well to his character and lore as someone who could both captivate and dominate you. However the voice and performance we got in the episode was not that at all - it didn't give a vibe of someone that you needed to be careful of OR really would be drawn to. That might change in later episodes as his character is developed, but it was a bit of a letdown. I wanted to be afraid of Valentino, instead I was wondering how he managed to be an overlord at all.

I can't help but compare how they handle this abusive relation vs how they handle the fizarolli-mammon stuff in HB. Both are very clear abusive examples of employers, but I think they handle it better in HH, mainly because of two things: First is that they make totally serious this situation, and second is that, unlike Fizz, Angel didn't get inmeditaly out in the episode we are presented the problem, so it acknowledges that healing and getting out of abusive relationships is a hard and long journey, which makes feel more believable
@mulqueen2023
@mulqueen2023 4 ай бұрын
@@arturouribebertolotti1169 Well when both are made by the same person, comparison is pretty much warranted. And both do stem from the inherent power dynamic of a boss and their employee. Just Fizz and Mamms isn't sexual which I'm thankful for, Fizz already went through enough. But I do enjoy also that Angel isn't "free" yet too. I've seen endless comments of people critiquing Angel for "getting in the situation" in the first place. Just the endless victim blaming and dehumanizing is depressing and horrible. So far in my opinion both represent different yet similar abusive relationships very well. However the same could be said for Blitz and Moxxie but they're main characters so somehow Blitz beating Moxxie is for laughs and calling him fat is funny while Mamm doing the same is wrong. I feel like in HB the distinction between villain and good guy isn't clear at all.

It came across to me more like the lead singer of a band who is only confident because he has groupies wanting to f*** him at every show and he made that his whole identity. I like the ego and the "poorly written confidence" actually. I'd like to see what happens when that confidence gets shaken or taken away, if there's an actual level of threat to the character as the first man and the leader of the exterminators.

I think the whole point for the VAs and how the characters are portrayed is so they won't be predictable or cliche people saw velvet and immediately thought "Harley Quinn, bratty influencer" people saw Val and thought "Deep voiced manipulator who's incredibly intimidating" people saw Adam and thought he'd be portrayed in a more angelic way with no cursing n such Viv is trying to make characters that aren't predictable, while I won't say that this is good or bad I think it's probably worth the thought to see the likely intended vision was to avoid falling into any overdone stereotypes for characters

For some reason, Katie's voice doesn't sound like it's actually being spoken by Katie, but just dubbed. Characters like Angel dust actually sound like they're... well... speaking. But Katie sounds like if Brandon Rogers dubbed a random news article. Which reallly sucks.

@jadee991

Which really does suck cuz everyone was hyping the idea of Brendon voicing Katie as Bryce which everyone me included thought woulda been a perfect fit. For some reason that I can’t put my finger on,…it doesn’t fit. It feels exactly like what you explained. for a sec when I heard Brendon’s voice I was wondering who was speaking even tho Katie was right in front of me. Idk if it’s just me being so used to the Katie from the pilot. I do feel like once everyone gets used to the idea that Brendon’s voicing them it’ll fit more ig. Either way I absolutely loved the episode definitely some issues with dialogue but every show has its small faults. I personally think the dialogue coulda been utilized more to say more. Sometimes I feel like they ramble too much for the sake of making things clear making it a little too repetitive or for a joke that doesn’t quite land. I was also wanting to see just more happen in terms of dialogue between the characters rather than just all jokes and small talk. Like with angel repeatedly just saying he’s a good porn star in 5 different ways. I was hoping he’d have more dimension in his dialogue. Then again it’s legit only the first eopisode so I’m definitely jumping the gun. I was looking for maybe Husk saying “can you cut it out with the horny shit”, angel in response then shrugs and basically leaves him alone for the rest of the episode which woulda been cute and funny and shows a little dimension to how these guys haven’t been living with each other forever so their dynamics keep changing. I just felt like all the dynamics were way too extreme all at once with the same emotions and tone throughout. Idkkk like moments when I was watching and they were talking I was thinking, they could’ve really been talking about something else here. Idkkk. But I genuinely do love it, it holds a special place in my heart and I love analyzing. So I analyze the good and the bad of any shoe I’m a fan of. Like emotions that I genuinely liked outa the characters were when Charlie came back upset and was cheered up by the commercial cuz it’s a break from her extreme happy personality and angels annoyed face when he asks if Vaggie even knows what “fix in post” means. Idk if what I’m saying even makes any sense. I just feel like there could’ve been more in some places and less in others.

Maybe they should have made Adam some type of entitled person who uses his title of being the first human on earth to get what he’s wants. They could give him high manipulation skills which makes Charlie think he’s a nice person, then Adam can use Charlie for the sake of it. I hated the way the portrayed Adam here. I would have been fine with him being a one time appearance but seeing how his character is so relevant it’s likely that we’ll see him more. My thoughs on Episode 1: It was ok, nothing Amazing and the scenes with Adam drag out a bit too long for my liking, but nothing that bad, i loved the scene with Alastor and Vaggie My Thoughts on Episode 2: Quite a bit better. I loved how Sir Pentious is portrayed here. As for the 3 V's, I'm conflicted, On one hand, i adore how Vox is pretty much the Glomgold to Alastor's Scrooge, wished he was more intimidating tho. On the other hand, I'm kinda disappointed by how goofy and almost childish they made Valentino ngl, idk i guess i've become spoiled by the Fandom's portrayal of him. Really thought he'd be the conniving, manipulative mastermind who was a legit danger to everyone associated with him. Instead, he's a simple-minded flouncy... spoiled brat? I’m personally a fan of Velvette’s voice because while I expected a bratty influencer voice as well I think the voice she has emphasizes her as a cutthroat industry woman, more the devil wears Prada than mean girls, which fits with how she’s suggested to also hold control over the fashion industry.

I agree that episode 2 did a better job than 1. However, I did like the voices for the other two Vs. The bratty voice would be too stereotypical. You can be social media savvy without being a brat. I love that she's boisterous and pompous. It gives a different female character to follow, with Charlie being sweet and Val the angsty tough one. The pacing is an issue, and I think it will be as long as they want to cover a lot of ideas in 20 minutes. I think they need to make the episodes leaner or increase to 40 minutes.

When it comes to character writing, so far I dislike Adam. I found it unnecessary for him to swear so much and act immature. I imagined him being serious, calm, strict, composed, while also being ignorant. Maybe even a sadist towards sinners. He just felt like a Helluva Boss character, but he's not a Helluva Boss character, and I think Hullva Boss gets a pass with that characterization because it already established itself as a raunchy show from the start. Hazbin Hotel in the other hand wants us to take it more seriously. I just thought high level or important angels would've presented themselves as "pure" or "divine" while also having a few instances to swear, just to show that even they can be flawed, or because we know how much the writers like to make characters swear. I guess Lute is a close example of what I expected of Adam's character. I also don't necessarily hate Velvet's voice, I just expected a stuck up social media brat voice. Almost like one of the Glitz and Glam twins (specifically the wild one, Glitz). She just sounds like the fashion Gordon Ramsay.

Huge disagree on Adam, Velvette and Valentino. A lot of people seem to have an issue with how Adam is characterized, but I don't really see why TBH. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but I think the dichotomy of the Princess of Hell being incredibly sweet compared to a high-ranking angel being a total prick works perfectly. As for Vel, I don't think a character really "needs" a reason to be British. She's British because she's British. Plus I think the cockney accent just suits her really well. And while I dislike Valentino as a character, I love his constantly shifting accent. I did initially think it was a case of bad acting/voice direction at first, but it quickly became obvious to me that it was an intentional gimmick, and I can appreciate how unique it is.

My take: episode 1 is decent enough but tries to do a little too much. First episodes are usually burdened with exposition so I can't hate on it. However I think the reveal at the end and the true reason the extermination exists in the first place should have been saved for a later episode. Episode 2 is the superior episode. We've been waiting to see Al and Vox have a face-off for years and this rap battle did not disappoint. Now that a lot of exposition was out of the way, the show is allowed to be what it wants. I don't mind Vox being the leader of the Vees and that his dynamic with Valentino has changed. Those defunct Instagram accounts implying Val abusing Vox was a long time ago and things will change during development. I agree that Val's voice was problematic. I get that some people with accents will learn to hide it in order to be taken seriously (like Alastor); then slip back into it when they get emotional, but Val was switching so much during his tirades that it was rather disorienting. Props to the actor but the director needs to make up their mind on how Val should talk. I'm not ready to judge Velvette but I certainly liked her outfit in the episode a LOT more that that weird mess she was wearing in the promos. Important to note: when she's changing outfits on the model standing in front of the mirrors, she stops on the outfit that is none other than Velvette's pilot dress :)

Also, a lot of the characters line art will noticeably change in scenes and as someone with OCD and who is an artist you notice things like that. I like it personally. Honestly with how much the culture mixes in hell it doesn’t shock me that his accent probably changed over time there

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Zestial. He's the coolest overlord, with Vox and Alastor following right behind.

Fun fact: vox is voiced by Christian borle, which is a name incredibly similar to Christian bale.

The first two episodes for me were pretty good... if I talk about the stuff I liked this comment would be long asf but I feel everything more alive than Helluva Boss... there's one scene were the characters are talking to each other and it feelt really nice, in Helluva Boss the characters tend to talk to each other too fast sometimes and it's hard to find a conversation with more than two characters in it (without a third one being used for a joke). I don't feel like everything goes too fast, it's more like everything that's happening makes the episode feel short... and my first "bruh" from the show was again, a blink and you miss it scene with Angel Dust and his phone... the one were Valentino is sending him messages, hopefully we wont have this kind of scenes anymore, because Helluva Boss kinda pissed me off when too much of that happened... What I didn't like was probably Adam being too.. over the top with his ego?? It confuses me how he got to Heaven in the first place. Valentino's voice didn't bother me that much, I like to think he uses his "papi chulo" voice as an act to seem powerful (just like Vox shows to be perfect but he's actually insecure), I'm curious about Velvet's case... her voice was cool for me, I was expecting a childrish character but she's better than what I wanted! Katie and Tom are great for me, I love Brandon as a voice actor and I knew he was going to be cool for Katie xD just like his videos I do agree that I was confused and even asked "why are Vaggie and Charlie together?" Because there was little to zero chemistry between the two :( Alastor is actually pretty funny, I didn't care about him in the pilot but he's cool in the series, everyone is!! I'm probably the minority who thinks Husk's new voice is actually really nice, I love him. There are some tiny animation errors that I noticed at second watch.. but it's ok.

Here in Australia we got the next 2 episodes early, is just keeps getting better but episode 2 is definitely the best and 1 is the worst. Number 4 is also great.

I liked Velvet’s voice. I originally thought she’d be some childish character, but having her be brash yet commanding was pretty cool. It feels like she has more depth than just “an influencer” Her song with Carmella in episode three was absolute fire and really sold me on her character.

uh I'm sorry, but Brandon Rogers as Katy Killjoy was literally amazing. Like when we first heard her talk I literally flipped out and rushed to Google to confirm that that was Brandon voicing her, 10/10 I hope we see more of her just so I can hear my boy.

Tbh, I don't think Velvet being British is all that far out. Sinners come from all over the place on Earth, so it's possible she happened to particularly like the accent and picked it up, or she just hung around a lot of British sinners and picked it up naturally there. (I don't think she's a sinner, but if she is it's also possible she was Birtish in her time on Earth and it translated in her accent down in hell.)

I like how Vox is a fad business man and isn’t the kind of business man or owner of a company who fulfills his promise to his consumers as seen in episode 2 how he tells the people that vox tech will have angelic security then hypnotizes the reporters and journalists, oh and the scene when he sells one of his products everyone is just staring at a screen cuz they’re being hypnotized by vox. Also I personally like Valentino’s voice and I think switching accents is pretty cool. My fav part of the show would have to be they combine things together, take velvette for example, she’s all about social media but people expect her voice to be a young girl but instead she has a British accent and the team executed that very well. Same goes for Valentino by looking at him he’s a pimp but before his voice reveal we expect him to sound American or something like that since we have this thing where we sorta stereotype something with another instead of thinking bigger, so you have a pimp who has this Italian accent who switches his accent to more American to Italian depending on his mood, I really hate when people critique the voices of characters they expect the characters how they imagine them instead of appreciating something new people done weather it’s a live action Disney movie where the main character of the film is black instead of white from the original movie, or a social media person who’s supposed to be all bratty and high pitched but people bash that character for having a British accent cuz it’s not how we usually see a bratty social media lover, or a pimp who’s supposed to be American and cocky instead you have a pimp who switches from an Italian accent to American and acts like a childish brat, I seriously fucking hate people who don’t appreciate people trying new and aren’t willing to embrace any change, yes not every change is good but there’s also change that’s good and people still bash those kinds of changes

People were saying that the pilot of this one was basically a retelling of the original, which made me very worried that they'd think "you already know all this" and skip stuff, which is super lazy writing I'm glad they didn't, they somehow hit all the same yet none of the same points the original pilot did

I binged four episodes last night until 2 am and I can say, you are right on point here. I think episode 4 is gonna cause a lot of controversy with Angel, but I do think having a deeper layer to him is important for his characterization. I won’t say anymore until you review it, but just be warned some people went nuts when they saw it and not in a good way
