A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to open up a Tesla Powerwall to see how it was built [ video: • Tesla Powerwall Teardo... ] Unfortunately it had discharged the batteries to zero volts. In the previous recovery video, I tried to use the low and slow method to bring the cells back to life, unfortunately, this was unsuccessful [ video: • Tesla Module repair | ... ]. This is now the second attempt to recover this Tesla Powerwall battery using a much higher charge current over 12 hours. Check out the video to see how I went!

@@HBPowerwall Now what we need is a "hacking a dead PowerWall pack with shorted cells so it can be used again" tutorial. I would expect that from the thermal image only the ones that lit up are actually stuffed, so it should be possible to cut them out of circuit from both sides and use the pack for something else with a simple bypass.

For those insisting there’s a way to revive these, it’s important to understand that when lithium batteries are at a low charge state, they form copper shunts that lead to self discharge and possibly a short. The heat exhibited when not charging is clear evidence that this has occurred. Continued efforts to charge could have catastrophic results. Great demonstration. Thanks
@fabianfeilcke7220
@fabianfeilcke7220 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite. The short only happens when reverse charged. An individual cell can go to 0V no problem. In a pack though there is always one that is drained first. That one is reverse charged by the others then.

HBPowerwall - Thank you again for another great Video. It is such a shame to see this and know that it will be a boat anchor at most., my power supply turned up last week and my pack with the voltage of over 10v has been charging and is at 22v. I have a security camera on it and multimeter connected so I am monitoring all day. I have rigged it up outside and well away from anything, just encase. I am running 4 amps into it only and it will still take time. I have an IP based 240 volt switch so if it starts to smoke etc i can turn the power of remotely. This pack seems to be ok, no discharge from when I last measured a couple of weeks ago. The other pack was the low voltage one, which I got to 8 volts and has sat there as well. Hoping it will take a charge. Will be putting it on tonight to start to get it up there. I dont have the BMS boards or a icharger yet so I wont push full voltage until I get something in place for that. All going well it might be useable. Keep posting when you do stuff with yours.

Behaving similar to a drill battery I'm working on. Was 0 volt. Used some voltage to start the battery cells one group at a time (so 1s2p in a 5s2p pack). one dual group was dead, 2 dual groups had one shorted cell that discharged the other one, one group was heavily corroded so didn't put in the effort. Things I did discover though, is that the "good?" cells would appear to discharge overnight when not on the charger, but would take charge again the next morning. However, each morning I repeated this and several times during the day the batteries kept loosing less and less energy, and started staying at a higher voltage. these are LiIon 3.6v cells. I suspect you have similar issues with that pack, and I'd probably suggest looking at the cells individually. Besides, as interesting as the modules are, I want to see what the actual cells look like and maybe some of those are individually recoverable. :)

Good job, of course that worked, that's exactly how you recover bad cells. I'm surprised your Dell laptop charger did not explode. The batteries attempt to pull more than one amp for each cell, because there are not resistors. However, I am not certain you are charging that pack correctly with the correct voltage, especially since the battery charger is flashing "not 4.2" volts.

I had this happen also , after getting to the point where you are I then took the battery apart and was surprised that's some of the cells would individually charged up and stay charged While others self drained. U might try snipping the fuse wires on all the hot cells and see if they hold a charge. I think what you have is some of the cells in the group maybe discharging the others.

something positive out of all this: you have found a weakness in the tesla packs, in that the bms does not shut down its own drain current when cells reach a certain voltage. There is no 'save the cells' mode present.......bit of a design flaw I would think. Good cells will last years or even decades if good quality, self discharge is so low in a good cell, that 5 years would not be a concern.

Amazing, thanks for these youtubes. But as you've shown - no way. Amazing. Just to recap - these packs were simply drained (slowly) to zero volts which destroyed them? Leads to the conclusion that allowing a design that drains to 0v is not a good design :)

This is why i like life po4 batteries they dont get hurt as easy as li ions . I drained my life po4 to 0.02 v and they came good after puting a fully charged life po4 on the dead ones so my charger would switch on . They are only ment to be drained to 2v but i stuffed up with some and drained them to far . Not having a bms does that . I used my charger to balance charge them equally but they are all diffent in resistance but charge and dont get hot . They arnt perfect but not throw away though . The life po4 batteries im using are 38120 cells capable of 200amps short burst or 100 amps cont . Its sad that all those cells are junk . Can you replace all of them with your other cells using all the tesla parts and cooling to make a new power wall . Or is it all to hard to pull apart to put your cells in place of the tesla cells .

Yes, FePO4 are a lot more robust but cheap ones less so. I once tried a "fix" for completely dead cells and actually got some working, turns out a small amount of heat does the trick. So does slow charging, like others have mentioned once they show reverse voltage ie -V where it should be +V then they are damaged beyond repair. Another method is charging just the weakest cell through the balance connector with a 4V 0.3A solar panel.

I think if you were to break the packs apart and focus on Packs 1, 3, and 5, you may find that the majority are fine and there's only a few SD's. Obviously Pack 2 has a lot of SD's and I wouldn't even be bothered doing anything with that one. Packs 4 and 6 will be highly suspect. So, if you were to do another test run, I would charge each pack individually "outside" of the housing (if you can, not sure how easy they are to dismantle) and then use the Flir to see which one are heating up. Test current would be about 1A/cell if you can manage it. That should make the heaters show up quickly and leak the heat into neighboring cells too fast.

But we're close, the 3.2ah cells were tested to about 30-60 mAh a few were at 1-1.5 ah, but some acted more like capacitors, they would go to 0v nearly didn't get hot until over 3.5v I could discharge, let sit, it would go up to 3.5v, discharge again, about 60 mah, about 4-6 times, without recharge! Luckally I only had about 10cent per cell in them, and the few that were at 1/2 capacity were kinda worth it! I'm going to use them in landscape solar lights! Maybe! Haha,

Tesla don't want you to open these packs. They are that well glued and epoxied together you have to break the battery apart with hammer and chisel to remove single cells. I have broken down one of these packs to recover cells for my 18650 powerwall and its a 8-10hour excercise plus you loose a few cells in the process. He builds racing mini engines, he has a load of experience building mini engines, the mini heads need porting and a scatter pattern cam with a good valve job multiple angle valve job, the valves are too small for the engine to make real power! I had a completely dead cell, and my power supply has both current and voltage limits. At first I set current limit to about 10 ma and the voltage fairly high, around 20 V. The cell started to slowly charge and was at voltage limit. I was watching the temp, At some point the voltage started dropping because of the current limit. I let it charge until the voltage reached cell rated voltage, and then started increasing current limit and dropped voltage down to right above rated voltage. I then let it charge at the normal rate while watching temp. The cell charged fully and has been working well since then. Of course this was only one cell.

The tests you did show that these batteries cant be charged but I would still like to understand exactly why they did this or exactly why they were producing so much internal heat? Is it because plate separating layers broke down or could dendrites have formed when the cells completely discharged. I am some what puzzled with these results because many times over the years I have been asked to repair various cordless power tools powered with lithium ion cells which should be of lower quality then the cells in these batteries and in most of those power tools some of which were completely discharged for many years would come back if slowly charged and in some cases, they needed a higher current booster charge to initiate the charging process but then they would fully recover. Its puzzling to me that cells that are apparently so advanced fail so miserably.
@nightmareinaction629
@nightmareinaction629 6 ай бұрын
Actually the lower quality makes them tougher against this because what happens is they have a thicker separator and or are less compacted into the cylinder because they don't require 3200mah per cell they mostly hover around 2500mah. So what happens with these they are mutch more compacted and way thinner separator it's easier to perforated said membrane hence why they can fail easier based of dendrides 😊
