At the beginning of March, we took a trip to El Chorro in the south of Spain for our first taste of outdoor sport climbing. A lot has changed since then. It looks likely we won't be climbing or heading to the bouldering gyms in a while but I'm grateful to have these videos to keep me occupied in the next few weeks and to remind me of carefree times in the hills.
Between at home workouts and home climbing training, I'm hoping to finally get through the backlog of videos I have yet to edit, so hopefully see you soon.
Hope you're all doing ok and keeping your chins up in this difficult time. :)

Nice to see your adventures in El Chorro! Well done for facing your fears, untying always makes us a little nervous, but it does get easier with repetition :) Longing for the Spanish sun and rock!

I just finished my toprope/belay training this week and, as I was heading back into the gym to do some autobelays after the training, bumped into some friends I didn't realise climbed. They were climbing lead so suggested I second so that we could climb on the same bit of wall (not necessarily the same line.) It was so hard! I normally climb 6a but the best I managed was a vertical 5+ with one fall. The physical aspect of finding somewhere good to stop (or, worse, forgetting and having to do it at the last minute), holding on with one hand, then unclipping one-handed as someone who's never used a quickdraw was a real challenge. Unclipping was mentally weird at first but wasn't too bad as I was in a gym setting so had full confidence in the bolts and didn't have to remove the top point or the quickdraws themselves. Doing that for the first time outdoors must have been so hard - very well done you for even attempting it, let alone pushing through it. I knew I wasn't up to lead standard (I knew I at least needed better overhang skills and endurance) but it was a real eye opener to just how hard it is. That said, I'd totally try seconding again as it's good lead practice and means I can do routes in the gym that can't be toproped.

Ah I also still find cleaning routes really scary! The concept of untying your rope and sitting on just a sling is really terrifying. Pleased you manage to conquer that :)

It really is! I must have put my slings in and then taken them out and lowered down about ten times hehe before I finally worked up the courage. Thanks :)

Hi Hannah. Just seen that we were in El Chorro at the Olive Branch around the same time 😁 Awesome place. I have a video on my channel covering resoling climbing shoes (definitely worth doing) and showing some of the climbing there. Really enjoying your videos and production style. Good stuff.

@@hannahmorrisbouldering we were so lucky to get there days before travel was shut down. Great place for you to move onto rope from bouldering. I'd be interested to know more about your production techniques too some time and happy to collaborate when you get the chance to head back to N Wales one day.

If I had to deal with fear of heights, or fear in general because I do't know what i'm doing, I'd have started in a gym in toprope, to get used to the heights and the harness and the rope, then do a lead course maybe (although we didn't do one back when) and only then go on a trip into the wild, so that I can enjoy the full trip and don't deal with all the new stuff there and then.

Top roping definitely helped me to get used to being at height, but leading is a whole different feeling I find! Definitely a learn to lead course would have helped me out before I went.

@@hannahmorrisbouldering yeah lead is almost like another sport, i know, and untying the knot at the top is scary as hell, even when you know tha sling is just as safe, it's an instinct thing, i guess.

Nice vid, can you explain ‘ cleaning a route’ as in I know you have to just anchor yourself with a sling. But are you physically cleaning the route or just practicing tieing in at an anchor point :)
@TheMasterMacc
@TheMasterMacc 4 жыл бұрын
When you clean route, then you clean all the draws, that you put up in the route.
@hannahmorrisbouldering
@hannahmorrisbouldering 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, yep, as Chris said, when you clean a route you take out all the quickdraws that you put in when you were climbing the route. To get the last quickdraw out, you have to sling in to the bolts at the top and untie so that you're not using it and use the ring at the top to lower off. :)

I think I find outdoor sport more thrilling, just because I'm less familiar with it so the satisfaction of making a move is more. Bouldering will always be my number one though. :)

Delayed comment but just came across this video. Just wanted to mention in terms of cleaning a route and lowering from the anchors you should never have to be completely untied from the rope and just on slings. I found this useful: dmmclimbing.com/Knowledge/January-2015/Lowering-off-a-sport-route but would use slings instead of the long quickdraw when anchoring to the bolts.
