I was sophomore in high school in 1985 and I remember trying to play *Ride the Lightning* during summer football workouts. Almost the entire team rejected it saying they "sounded like noise" and instead chose the *Vision Quest* movie soundtrack to work out to. By the summer of 1986 the entire football team were suddenly Metallica fans, playing *Master of Puppets* almost nonstop at every workout. 😆

Wow, 5 songs from Kill'em and 5 from Lightning, plus one cover and another one from the upcoming album. Usually the bands prefer to disposal the older albums in favor of the new ones, but they got the things very balanced. That's very rare and makes this concert an even brighter gem. @Paolo8772 2 ай бұрын
@@betterthanmost9549 I believe you're referring to the middle of the song when the tempo goes up a tiny bit but where there's no double picking. But I was also referring to the fact that they don't cut anything, and also that Lars is double kicking during the instrumental break in the last stanza before the chorus and also in the outro; just like on the album, which was never done live again. I'm not sure if it's my favourite Metallica song but it sure is close, and this performance is one of if not the best performance they've ever done. It is also a great pick for best Metallica song.

So rare to see Cliff performing live in a video. I bought Cliff em All soon as it came out in 1987 if I recall correctly. I was 17 in 11th grade. I remember watching parts of this concert and being really angry Cliff has died. I remember watching Metallica move and talk for the first time on that old VHS tape. It was surreal to see them actually move, walk talk and performing.. up to that point they were only pictures in magazines and on records for me and my friends.

You are trying to play it too fast. You cant overdo the speed till you have the song down 100%. You are trying to emulate the best at doing that so natually unless you have the movements as second nature you are going to over grip and get jerky and stiff. I have been playing for going on 15 years now and I still struggle with James playing just cuz he is so fast and perfect at all times. He is a machine. We are not suppsed to be able to play it like him that is why he is him ya know? On a side note I checked out your page. I like your vibe man. That set you played in the park looked really fun and everyone looked like they were having a great time.

The trick with James is the way he holds the pick and how he doesn't have to hold his arm up. It mostly just hangs there. It's much harder when you play in standard picking and strap height, which makes me appreciate Kirk more for pulling it off.

Then a handful of jocks saw the One video and became fans…now the last 20 years “fans” claim to have loved them all along! IMO the last good thing they did was the Mercyful Fate cover! Think about it... these guys were what, 21-22 years old at this point... and they write/play like this??? You will NEVER see this again from guys so young... when they played Disposable Heroes, no one today could last that long and play so accurate on a song like that...

Best version of NO Remorse There is out there (I think). Good job on brining this to KZfaq. Good re-EQ of audio compared to how it was with my worn out VHS tape of this live show from YEARS ago (converted it to DVD-R but got lost when I moved)! Nostalgia...!!!!!

I can’t believe James alternate picked once during this entire hour show

He definitely alternate picked more than once. About one third of the set is alternate picked.

@@potatosmith4786this. Idk why people think James only downpicks. It's obvious on songs like one, ride the lightning, disposable heroes, fight fire with fire and battery just to name a few that it has alot of alt picking. Not even James can down pick that damn fast lol. Just because he's known as a badass down picker doesn't mean he ONLY down picks. One of the biggest misconceptions about Metallica and James imo.

Cliff makes it look so easy. I remember like it was yesterday when I saw them in ‘86 at The Spectrum in my home city of Philly. Being 12-13 years old and witnessing the raw energy and excitement of seeing them for the first time. I walked out after that show a true fan for life. I was fortunate to see them with Cliff, and it was a true experience.

I went to see them in June or July '86 at Cal Expo, Sacramento, CA. We found out *at the concert* that James broke his wrist skateboarding and Blue Oyster Cult would be opening for Ozzy. The only damn reason I went was to finally see Metallica live. I was crushed.

And why not? I was there, too. Summer 85 on Loreley, St. Goarshausen, Germany. Also for Nazareth and Wishbone Ash. Metallica was killer. When Venom entered the stage, I was so drunk that I couldnˋt stand on the stonewall anymore.😁

Native to S.F. I was fortunate to see them many many time all over the Bayarea with the earliest line ups. The Stone, Ruthie's Inn and many other places. I have to say The Stone on Broadway 83, Day on the Green 85 and Cow Palace 88 were pivotal for me. Nothing has come close after these shows... Also, saw their performance a few years back at Rasputins records in Berkeley, it was cool as it was a small show and good energy, but still wasn't as visceral as the 80's. So glad they survived all these years. Time for bed, I'm old.
