A quick quality test of me playing Mega Man Zero 3 on legitimate hardware/the Gameboy player via the Gamecube. Sure, TECHNICALLY this isn't the "original" original hardware. But good luck recording the Gameboy Advance natively and make it look decent. I'm using an upscaler called the RetroTINK 5x Pro, which allows me to output it to 1080p to the TV. I currently can't capture 4K with my Elgato and PC setup, but I'm not concerned about the highest quality atm.
What you see right now isn't finalized look of the footage. There are still tweaks to be made on the 5x's settings to make the pixels more sharper, and there's some downscaling methods that I can try. Obviously, you can't expect the original hardware to look as good as the Legacy Collection. But I can get it to look pretty damn close once I learn more about my options.
I've been wanting to replay all of my classic/retro games on their respective original hardware, but was held back by the limitations of current technology not displaying it clean enough. That was until I invested into a 5x Pro and slowly bought component cables for all of my systems.
I seriously would not recommend investing into a retro setup like this since it gets expensive (the scaler alone costs $325... pretty much the cost of a modern gen console). And it makes no sense to buy a scaler if you're only trying to play one or a few games in high quality from original hardware. I only justified it because I have multiple old consoles, and I prefer original hardware over emulation/collections. Perhaps I'll go more in-depth with this sort of thing in future commentary videos.
Either way, I do want go back to original hardware for any gameplay I use going forward on this channel. This includes the Zero 2 remastered run (whenever it'll be).

I want to buy a RetroTINK 5x purely for recorded VHS tapes, not just for my PS2. I’ve always wanted to record recorded VHS tapes without frustration. By that I mean my damn capture card screen going blank then getting its signal back.

I can definitely feel that "GBA smoothness" in this footage. After having played this game on my old SP for so long, this does feel more familiar than any other footage somehow. It might be because of the frame rate?
@MagnusZero
@MagnusZero 11 ай бұрын
Given that the RetroTINK isn't altering the actual game in any way and is just enhancing the visuals/upscaling the best it can, this is still the 100% original experience. So yeah, the familiarity remains intact.

God, I always love watching Magnus play Z3 and just see how immaculate his pogo usage is. I also love the walking slashes on the rats in the factory just to optimise that smidge of endlag out. I think mostly the room to optimise these runs was mostly in the second half of the factory after the hive. Dropped terrain glitches hurt (not that that's easy) and the obvious minor fumble of falling on the box. Out of curiosity, how come you want to play on OG hardware? Input lag reasons, nostalgia or what?
@MagnusZero
@MagnusZero 11 ай бұрын
A combination of input lag and just wanting to respect these games more by playing on the hardware they were intended on, even if it's at the cost of some visual quality. Emulation is still legit, but it can never replicate the authentic experience down to the T.

I'm sure other commentors have pointed this out (I'm too lazy to check), but the GameCube community developed GBI, which is basically a replacement for the Gameboy Player software disc. It looks sounds and runs better in pretty much every way. If you still want to use the original disc, you can force 480p in Swiss and you'll get that emulator sharp look, since doing that disables the sofening filter. It won't fix the other issues, though.

I recommend using Game Boy Interface for the highest quality possible, specifically the High Fidelity version since you’re using a scaler. Should give you razor sharp pixels with clean audio and no screen tearing!

I recommend the Game Boy Interface software but it requires you to soft mod your GCN. You will still be playing on original hardware but with a better version of the Game Boy Player disc.

@@MagnusZeroYou'll need an SD2SP2 for the Gamecube (allows the use of SD cards on the console) + a GC memory card that has a "corrupt" save file + compatible game (ex: Windwaker) that allows you to boot Swiss.

Super stylish as always! I can't say I have any advice on software or anything like that, but at least for ease of viewing, I feel like cropping out the GBA frame and enlarging the actual game screen might help the look a bit? It might just be me, but it makes the footage seem a little bit tiny. I guess that's technically par for the course for GBA stuff, and I'm not really an expert. Still, I'm looking forward to future use of this on the channel, and I hope it improves your casual experiences as well!
@MagnusZero
@MagnusZero 11 ай бұрын
The problem with that is without the softmodding option others have pointed put already, you can't enlarge the Gameboy Player window without losing quality. Enlarging it natively blurs the image. Enlarging it during edits is even worse since Vegas Pro is terrible at upscaling anything. So, my only option is to go the softmod route to make this look as good as the emulation output (which never had these issues since emulation has unfair advantages).

It looks like you're using the original Gameboy Player disk -- you can get a big quality boost with using GBI, Gameboy Interface. It's essentially a replacement software that fixes the shortcomings of the original disk, to include less than stellar video output. It also opens up much cleaner options if you're using the Component Cables
@MagnusZero
@MagnusZero 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, another commenter pointed this out earlier. I'm researching into GBI as we speak. I have 5x Pro + component setup already, so I just need to go through the modding process.
@AstralLovelace
@AstralLovelace 11 ай бұрын
If you go the GBI route, I'll also say that *personally*, as someone with a EON-GCHD Mk-II, which has both component *and* straight HDMI out, that I found GBI via straight HDMI out will give you "emulator like" sharpness and color -- You'll just want to scale in OBS by integer values to fill the screen. Retrotink does offer things like the LCD filter that can make it look more "Gameboy like", but I also found that Retrotink seemed to detect it was GBI and then applied some 'color correction' that wasn't present on the straight HDMI. But there's tons of options!
@MrSmiley381
@MrSmiley381 11 ай бұрын
@@AstralLovelace Seconding this comment; if you use GBI with output at 480p using HDMI, the GBA game's resolution of 240x160 should be doubled to 480x320 inside a 640x480 output. If you can crop specifically to that portion of raw gameplay you can integer scale to whatever you'd like and have a background border, blank space, or whatever else you might like to try. Funny thing is, I recall analog broadcast 480p is actually a 720x480 resolution using non-square pixels (again, analog TV shenanigans), which that native 240x160 would fit perfectly if the resolution were tripled. No idea if there is a GBI+EON-GCHD Mk-II option to do that to an HDMI monitor that would handle the pixels 1:1 perfectly. At that point it would be like playing on a giant GBA LCD all its own, minus gamma correction because the original GBA screen is so dark.

@@insertsomememereferenceher8483 I’m aware that VBA and no$ are very reliant on speedhacks and other things that make them less accurate to the hardware. But VBA gameplay has always felt more fluid to me than MGBA or Bizhawk - rather than feeling like playing on console, it feels better and makes it feel more like a PC game.

The problem (or non-issue depending on who you talk to) with any emulator is that it can allow for some slight advantages over OG hardware. Depending on the skill level of the player, these advantages can either be negligible/unnoticeable or exploitable enough to make certain movements either impossible or harder to do on original hardware. Input lag is practically non-existent in perfect emulation, for example. While that allows for easier execution on advanced tech, it's normal for any game to have some lag, even if it's just something as small as a second or half a second. From my own experience, I was surprised at how such a tiny difference in lag affected my gameplay. Jumping back on the emulator after playing on the Gameboy player for a month, the absence of lag was throwing me off because Zero could respond to my inputs slightly faster. I'd simply forgotten how natural lag felt after all these years. Keep in mind that before I originally switched to emulation, I was nowhere near my current skill level. So, I couldn't have possibly picked up on this until playing these games again years later on their native system. Yet, despite the OG experience feeling slightly "laggier," it feels a lot more natural and smooth--the way it was designed around. I still feel in complete control. That's why speedrunners are required to play on original hardware. Casually, no lag is negligible. Seriously, it's inaccurate to realistic execution, which made me second guess my actual skill level in these games. So, I feel more comfortable knowing that I can still perform well on OG hardware. I just have to get readjusted to the lag that's supposed to be there. I think the little sample gameplay I recorded here illustrates this well enough, despite the fumbles here and there.
