Ships travelling on Land | Elblag Canal Boat Lift

Күн бұрынOn the Elblag Canal in Poland (Polish: Kanał Elbląski), the difference in water levels of 99.5 meters must be overcome over a distance of only 10 kilometers. This happens with 5 inclined planes on which the ships are transported by carriages over land. These boat lifts are built like a funicular, which is powered by hydropower.
Auxiliary rails in the underwater area ensure that the ships are lifted horizontally out of the water. For this purpose, the wheels are equipped with two treads.
The Elbląg Canal was built from 1844 to 1860 in the Kingdom of Prussia and is now located in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Polen. The canal connects the cities Elbląg, Ostróda and Iława.
In the video you can see the inclined planes of Kanthen (Kąty) with 18 meters difference in height and Buchwalde (Buczyniec) with 21.5 meters.

So impressive that this is properly maintained and in use 120 years after beginning of construction, despite the awful wars. Bravo Poland!

The design for these inclined planes was taken from that of the Morris Canal in New Jersey, USA, which operated from 1829 to 1930. Sadly, our Morris Canal was abandoned after that, and lies in ruins. most of it has been erased from existence. I’m in the process of exploring the entire thing, or at least every part of it that still remains. many of the incline planes still remain, if nothing else, just the original grade, and maybe some cables, still laying on the ground. These once technological marvels lay in forlorn ruin, in the woods, or in peoples backyards. it was fantastic to see an incline plane actually in operation, thank you so much for making this video!

Even though I am being a Master Mariner - I am amazed at this wonderful idea. This technology is also used in Docking small ships whereas similar system used called 'Slip ways'.

Интересный план германцев и Польское исполнение. 4 года строили основной путь и канал вспомогательные вода с озёрами ещё дольше. Это было сделано ещё до первой мировой войны в мирное время, давненько. Естественно ремонтно-восстановительные работы уже не так давно проводились, так следует думать и полагать. Судна и лодки до 50 тонн способен пропускать этот канал с железной дорогой. Общая длина около 10 километров. Сейчас имеет смысл прокопать большой тоннель, думаю за один два года можно провести такие земляные работы и канал шире сделать. Думаю без пары шлюзов не обойтись. Плохо что землю политики делят, Бог на это не давал согласия. Белорусам тоже нужен такой канал, но думаю политики польские против, а очень жаль. По этим и подобным причинам Космическое Сообщество миролюбивых сил против помощи землянам, они считают всех людей враждебными и злыми и не идут на контакт. Польша и Литва заперла Калинградскую область от России, это плохо для народов. Думаю со временем все вопросы будут решено мирно и сообща или будет разрушительная война, чуть чуть беременными не бывают люди. Азъ Люди Мыслите (Алиф Лэмм Мииим Бог Аллах один и един, увы люди делят всё и называют по разному одно и то же Всевышнее Существо)!

Ja, die Anlage ist weitestgehend original erhalten. 2013 und 2014 gab es größere Renovierungsarbeiten.

In medieval time in Asia people using elephant to move one boat across the land from upstream river to another upstream river. In Malaysia its call Jalan Penarikan. It's located between state of Melacca and Pahang where two upstream just closer but not connected.

During World War II, Nazis would transport U-boats over land that were sectioned in three. When they reached the bay where they were to be relaunched, they welded the sections back together again and launched tje U-boat.
