Live, Los Angeles, 1967 American Bandstand
American Bandstand. Dick Clark asked some yes-or-no questions to Barrett, who got through the appearance without incident.
The next day, the band was booked on The Pat Boone Show, which didn't go nearly as well. When they recorded their performance, Barrett refused to lip-synch, instead just staring into the cameras when they were rolling. To solve the problem, Roger Waters mimed the song in his place. The tour was cut short after Barrett de-tuned his guitar and just made random sounds with it during a concert at the Fillmore West. He was replaced for live shows by David Gilmour soon after.

The middle section is so beautiful, and is an early foreshadowing to their unique chord progressions. Proof that Syd had important influence, contrary to a lot of opinions

I've never heard anyone say he didn't have influence on the rest of the band and their further songs, I mean how could he not as the guy who started it all for all those years with them. Unlikely they'd have even become well known musicians if they hadn't been with him and inspired by his mould breaking creativity in the first place, and the rest of the band say as much themselves. So not sure what you're referring to with saying 'contrary to opinion'

@@Andy-hc1bt You'd be surprised that a huge chunk of Floyd fans never even knew about Syd or if they did thought he was just "that crazy guy who was in the band at first." Syd's impact went far beyond the band but generations of artists, especially the late 70s punk era. The ones who'd wear "I hate Pink Floyd" shirts were actually quite fond of Syd

@@kvrma8893 He didn't lose his mind, try reading some actual books by him instead of relying on what Waters or Gilmour said which was basically just an attempt at justifying why they kicked him out of the band. Not to mention all the shitty myths online. He even tried to rejoin in 1969 and they wouldn't let him.

Dear Corinne, The Pink Floyd were rushed in the studio to finish the recording. Their record label, EMI, wanted another hit single! Roger Waters said that "Apples And Oranges" was "a fucking good song" but that Floyd Producer Norman Smith was to blame for the bad production and the record not selling well. Syd Barrett said of his composition. ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT ~ "It's a happy song and it's got a touch of Christmas. It's about a girl I saw walking round town in Richmond." Raul.🙂

syd was truly the original creative genius of the pink floyd sound. honestly heartbreaking to see how gone his eyes are here, he was one of the greatest minds of progressive rock. a true artist who did it for the ART. rest in peace crazy diamond

I could absolutely tell that the rest of Pink Floyd were completely nervous during this performance because of Syd's unpredictable behaviours and erratic tendencies. When Clark starts asking them questions, everyone else (especially Roger) becomes even more nervous in case Syd refuses to talk.

@@domeck6482 Yeah, but those are just pictures. Nick Mason's book "Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd" (which I own) states that Syd began going crazy mentally in 1967. Just because they looked happy in those pictures from '67 doesn't mean they were.

Everything happens for a reason. If Syd hadn't flipped, they'd have never got Gilmour in and I don't think they'd have become one of the best bands in the world.

Paulo Leal People say that about any clip or photo where you can visibly see Syd Barrett when in reality he only visibly started looking removed about a month before he was kicked out of the band. In this clip he actually looks quite normal

@@AmarilloMusicAB That's not true. The band has stated by the time they traveled to the US for the first time Syd was already different. Look at the Astronomy Domine from the Keller show. Or when they perform See Emily Play. Syd looked a lot different. I mean come on. I know most people are very sensationalist and exaggerated when it comes to Syd, but look at him here. He's either gone already or higher than a fucking kite.

The more you know ? Syd Barrett was damaged beyond repair. He hardly knew what day it was much of the time and this interview is a miracle as he'd have peaks and troughs, according to those who knew him. Romancing brain damage doesn't help anyone. He lived the rest of his life as functional and relatively content and that is a good thing.

Some odd questions from Dick Clark, but what a nice interview and how pleasant each of the guys were. I dont think it was registering with anyone that they'd be one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time.

Funny how the first thing he asked is what they ate... but what is even crazier is that, from all of the footage from this period (maybe not this one as it was lip synced, but the live performances in Copenhagen, Rotterdam, and Stockholm), Syd is consistently on top form.... supposedly the time he was "breaking down"... that is not the guitar work of someone who has lost it, so either whatever happened to him was very quick (something within one month perhaps), or it is simply not real

@@thomascraymer8712 First indications something was off with Syd started to surface around mid-1967, perhaps in the spring of that year. I don't think it became a serious problem until late summer/fall of '67, after the release of TPATGOD, but what happened to Syd was VERY real. I saw a recent interview with Roger Waters from only a few years back. Syd's demise was devastating to the band. He said it was "existential", meaning If it was not for David Gilmour's quick replacement and Roger starting to write songs Pink Floyd may not have survived Syd's departure.

@@jamesaron1967 Yeah I can agree there, the first indications were probably that spring/summer, but there was also the "lost weekend" (mid-summer perhaps?), and the fact that people would be constantly spiking his drinks. So that part is definitely real, something definitely happened to him in those few months What I meant was that it's often said he was unable to perform due to what happened, but we have recordings from that autumn where Syd is on top form, and even the Top Gear gig in December, Syd is still there, and on pretty good form. So the idea that Syd was unable to perform any more is very much an exaggeration. That said, I do hope footage of PF with both Syd and David surfaces! Would certainly be interesting to hear

@@thomascraymer8712 OK, I see what you're saying. Yes, he was able to perform. He became more and more erratic and unpredictable as 1967 progressed. By the fall, although hope persisted there was growing doubt by the other band members that he could continue as a full-time contributor. But you're right that the widely held perception Syd could not perform at all is not true. He had his good moments. If that weren't the case then his two solo albums that came later would not have been possible.

Katya Lavrentyeva Richard William "Rick" Wright was such a soft spoken gentleman! He had such a humble and sweet demeanor. I just can't believe Roger Waters would ever have considered firing Rick! But he did! Rick Wright is my all~time favorite Pop/Rock Organist! Rick's various solos on "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" are so Psychedelic and mesmerizing! Rick's solo on the "Live At Pompeii" is especially gripping. But, I must say, Wright's solo on "Scream Thy Last Scream (Old Woman With A Casket) just blows my mind!

Syd was not gone yet here. The whole band feels a little out of place lip syncing their own song and it shows. On another note, Apples & Oranges has the basic structure that was used in many modern rap songs. Thank you Pink Floyd for so many contributions to music.

Everyone here saying "look at him,its so crazy,out of his mind,gone" and all this thing..i think it was against lip sync,TV shows and all this sort of things,he was a truly great artist and beside what he could have gone trought,he didnt care about success or being in that normal line. So i think its all that!

@@anticosepolcro7354 He went crazy - it's the usual slander. I agree with you. Syd stops lip synching altogether at the end of Apples and Oranges after a half assed attempt all throughout. He was very clearly making a point!

I’ve just watched an interview with Roger and he openly states this is the show that the rapid decline starts in Sid. Where Roger walks into the hotel room & Sid has let the cigarette burn to the skin through two fingers. Sad really

Lipsynching is Utter Cancer. Here we have a legendary, talented band in it's short-lived lineup with its original singer with so little existing footage from this era... and we don't even get a real performance, just them awkwardly trying to match with a pre-recorded tape.

It breaks my heart so much because it's Pink Floyd and of course is Syd there but if you see his eyes he is not there anymore and it looks like his soul was gone. As somebody said, he has an empty look...

Look at his face. He was so far away...a genius mind, amazing singer, amazing guitarist, amazing songwriter. But LSD and pills in excess brought schizophrenia. Syd was amazing, so indifferent on this performance. Miss you crazy diamond

An untreated schizophrenic wouldn't be able to produce solo albums and write songs the way he did, definitely not schizophrenic, trust me on that. Definitely not as crazy as he was made out to be either.

However, sometimes during the day he looks like Syd, looking for the walls, talking to himself, sometimes says things without sense, have hallucinations, you talk to him and he didn't answer, have visions, hear sounds, start to laugh alone...Syd was an schizophrenic

FERNANDO MARINELLI well first of all its implied that Syd had disorganised schizophrenia as opposed to paranoid schizophrenia. Secondly, the longer it's untreated the more out of touch with reality the sufferer becomes. And Syd was never diagnosed, and I don't think he's acting particular odd here either just a bit dazed, which doesn't have to be schizophrenia it can anything, even depression. Also, lsd doesn't cause schizophrenia it can just worsen symptoms of it or set it off prematurely but in no way is acid responsible for schizophrenia.

@@stickytoastcrunch5500 Well...who knows the real situation?! Schizophrenic, Asperger, depression, doesn't matter. I love his voice, his songs, the style that he created. Madcap Laughs is amazing, out of time, broken rhythms, but that was new, was simple and became a masterpiece with Terrapin, so deep, Octopus, Long Gone, No good Trying...perfect! Barrett is awesome, great songs, like Wolfpack, Rats, Baby Lemonade and Love Song. Perfect album!!! Opel is so dark, full of great moments and have my favorite song from Syd, Milky Way. The crazy diamond will live forever in our hearts. Was a pleasure to talk about Syd with you. See ya.

FERNANDO MARINELLI madcap laughs genuinely saved my life. Yeah the whole point of the sound was that it was unrefined. Random precision. Syds songs were more art than constructed musical pieces. No man's land is my favourite on the album, and Terrapin was the first song I learnt to play on the guitar. My favourite song that Syd wrote is Jugband Blues though. Or candy and a current bun because that one was sexual AF lol. I just don't like people assuming that he was schizophrenic and throwing that diagnosis out when in fact it's more likely that he was eccentric. After all, he was an artist.

Syd did not seem so far away as they claimed. He seemed to react very normal for a guy who was supposed to have all but dissapeared.

His effect is totally flat. He’s disoriented and acting bizarrely. He’s socially withdrawn and fearful. In other words, the initial signs of schizophrenia. It doesn’t mean he’s totally psychotic. Its a spectrum like depression.

So he stared out into the camera like he was bored he answered each question totally appropriately. Is he looking around and falling down? Wandering around? Unable to answer questions? Everybody has flat affect when they're bored. He's not acting any different than anyone else on the stage. Stop projecting.

Well, his girlfriend said he did LSD for 7 days straight. After that, people who know him said he came back and was never the same. He went from being charming and lively to having this "is anybody home?" demeanor.

RIP Richard Wright. An absolute legend. 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond...' is the finest LP ever made, closely followed by 'The Wall'. While Syd Barrett was childishly playing with his gnomes in fantasy land, Pink Floyd were crafting Mona Lisa's such as 'Wish You Were Here'. Syd was totally gone at this point. You could see it in his eyes. All the band members noticed. Very tragic.
