Asian parents are actually sabotaging their kids by putting them through the best high schools, SAT prep classes, and same extracirriculars as other Asians (Coding, Classical Instruments, Tennis, etc.) Based on how colleges looked at admissions (saving seats for top students at random schools, factoring students who have less opportunities, and waiving the need to add a SAT Score. Its SO COUNTERINTUITIVE. By looking out for their kid's best interests they are just pitting him/her against all the other high performing Asian students So it makes sense he was rejected, Stanley was: -Attending a top high school in Palo Alto -From wealthy family (ITS PALO ALTO) -Spent a lot of effort on getting a top 1% SAT Score >An applicant who was a top student from bumfuck nowhere and from a poor family and didnt take the SAT, actually has closer odds as Stanley when it comes the admission officer's eyes.

This! It’s all about socioeconomics! Stanley is going to succeed regardless because he comes from an upper income background.

The strat actually is to go to a mid tier or community college for 2 years, get a 4.0 gpa then transfer to an ivy or top school, save 2 years of expensive tuition, make it seem like youre a high performing student from a lower socioeconomic background trying to make it out, graduate with an ivy degree under your belt for half the cost (sort of what i did)

You have a great point but I'm going to counter your argument here. Most asian applicants are expected to have great scores and AP classes. If you focus on extracurriculars then the school system might actually deny you by admitting other students with higher grades which is a risk as well. Its like a feedback loop where the system expects great scores for asian students. The Parents then spend their income on enrolling their kids in tutoring and private schools. Now the system says you are priviledged and need better scores, then the parents spend even more resources and it never stops.

It wasn't always like this. I think the whole "dropping the SAT score movement" only happened within the last 10 years, maybe even less. But it sure amplified with the whole "woke/under priviledged/BLM/DACA/etc" movement.

The move is actually to apply to schools without a large Asian-American student population. Unfortunately, these schools are looked down on by immigrant parents because they don’t carry the same name value that UC public schools do

The idea that all asian colleges students are the same is ridiculous and this is coming from a black guy who went to college with a lot of asian students. Just because a student is Asian and gets good grades doesn't mean they don't have their own unique personality and interests.

The larger point is not that this outstanding young man will be fine being hired by Google, but what does this imply to other talented young Asian Americans trying to get into a top level college. In all the confusing cross currents, what is getting lost is the proverbial elephant in the room: Your skin color and race is far more important than your talent, effort, and character. It seems there are “too many” of “his kind” of people trying to get into these schools. Your admission into college is determined more by your membership in a racial group than your individual characteristics? Is this the kind of country we want to live in?

A lot of colleges have a high Asian student body whereas the black student body was less than half of the ASB? Why didn't they tackle the real issue? Asians were also getting into colleges through AA and now, it's ruined for everyone. Asians celebrated the dismissal of AA. Called it a victory.... and months later, it backfired. Some should start their own universities and colleges as I have said before. Jewish people have Yeshiva and other schools. African Americans have Howard and other historical colleges and universities too. The thing is that colleges and universities can't let EVERYONE in even if their resume/CV is perfect. People need to learn to apply to more than the Ivies regardless of how smart they think they are, which couldn't be too smart if that is all some people apply to. That is cocky as hell but not smart (some people lack common sense but that's another story, which is a part of intelligence). I prefer Howard Gardners approach concerning intelligence. Nonetheless, people need to apply to their tops picks, their middle picks and their lower picks even if he or she is a genius due to test scores, and their parents' opinion (yes, I used their a lot). Lower picks are probably schools the person applying and only a handful of other people know but provides a wonderful education and has the program and research he or she likes, etc. Some Indian, Chinese and Korean people are all about the name when it should be about the education and what he or she wants to do with their life (keyword: some). Universities are becoming an LV bag for some people, which doesn't prove that you're rich or smart nor does it mean a person's life will be easier, but some research says one could make more money but even that varies by major and who the person knows and so on. I have noticed that the Japanese people whom I know are not all about the name, which is interesting when comparing some different eastern groups and some southern groups (Japanese people are doing exceptionally well as a people and country, which is why they barely come to the U.S. anymore). It's funny because some of the Japanese snack stores are run, by Chinese and Korean people. Most people want to go to Japan not the other way around. The research on this is intriguing too. The thing is that people who were blaming it on Affirmative Action have no more excuses. They said they were tired of hearing African Americans and Hispanics complain and now it's the pot calling the kettle black (I knew this narrative was coming, and I knew getting rid of AA would change nothing since it was European Americans who started this agenda, and he wasn't interested in helping Asians, especially when they were his second choice after the legal battle failed using white students). Never be a person's second choice in legal battles or within relationships. Some individuals are naive or lack a basic understanding of history in the U.S. concerning divide and conquer. People have nothing left to blame not getting accepted on but racism and other factors well welcome to African American and Hispanic people's world. I believe some colleges and universities are tired of seeing the same background CV when there are hundreds of other Asian kids who have the same resume since China, Korean and India all have a strong math and science curriculum within the country for people who can go to a good school in those countries because poverty is a big thing in those places too. Do people really believe schools with low acceptance rates of 4 percent or less are going to let everyone in with exceptional scores? Life is disappointing and doesn't always work like that (none of us are always going to get what we want even with wealth). This kid got a job at Google and if he plays his cards right, he will be wealthier than he might already be concerning the app he has and so on. The purpose of going to school is basically to gain money, power and contributing to society as a whole (not all in that order). The hilarious thing is that some people like to say "oh hard work and blah, blah and blah, but the world is not that simple" He might just be a weird outlier for whatever reason. In addition, some of these people are entitled brats. Furthermore, various people come here because they couldn't cut it within the educational system back home according to some of my friends who are from overseas. If something doesn't work out create your own (maybe someone needs to create historical Asian Universities as another option unless the person just want to go because it is a European American created school that is old for the U.S. but not in regard to the world when it comes to education). Jewish people created a banking system for them when banks would not loan them money, etc. It doesn't make it better because a European person runs it (there are only so many ways to teach math, science and so on). There is always next year if he doesn't like where he was accepted to, or he could take a gap year, like some people do from his generation (some of these young people need to learn to be humble or get humbled as they say). The University of Texas and University of Maryland are not bad schools and since we have not seen his total package it is hard to say what he should have gotten into at all (it's not like he got in nowhere, which happens to some people for whatever reasons). This kid will be fine in life (some people are too entitled). Also, all of those admission officers at the colleges are not liberal even at Columbia University here in NYC (some have a lot of micro-aggression issues too). They don't tell us why we were not hired when we apply for a job and don't get it so why should they with colleges and universities? They're not trying to have legal issues. His future is at stake if he gets into no schools, which is not the case. The guy that suggested Oxford had a good idea there. The person that said a lot of African American and Latino people have Affirmative Action should be changed to had (he might have been living under a rock or doesn't live in the U.S). The law has been changed (keyword: had). They should have thought about putting legacy admission in that package when they rallied against AA (deal or no go for either). The problem here is not about being cool because there are a lot of white nerds at CU and other Ivies, etc. Different people might have varying opinions on what's cool or not. Also, there was talk about African Americans and sports that make up 70 to 75 percent but let's talk about how own the teams, which are the people making millions and billions without getting the brain damage due to being hit all the time (the slave vs. the master per se). I rather own a team than play on it (I would avoid getting a lifetime of injuries, and the possibility of never playing again due to an injury). Because ABC's all use the same formula and it doesnt translate well into the workforce. Business success depends on so much more than just being smart. In private equity you have to be personable and be able to ebb and flow with various investors. This kid would not fit that role....at all.

What OG asian parents don’t understand is nowadays education is so overrated…instead of $500K for private schools to private colleges just put that money in a trust fund for the kid or use that as seed money for their own business ideas etc.

DIVERSITY is all these top colleges' primary admission criteria. The easiest way to have a diverse student population is race based! It may appear that Asian students are being treated with biased admission factor. It's basic economics of supplies and demands! Asians by nature are simply more conservatives, and believe that higher education would ensure future prosperity. There are simply too many supplies of top Asian students, hence, too many demands for top college admission. I am a Taiwanese with degrees from top colleges and working as a CPA. However, based on my own professional experiences, having a degree from a top college is a gimmick! There are more real important life factors in order to have a reasonable career! You do not need a degree from a top college to have a decent career. Find something practical to do in life. Many top college students with unpractical degrees are really wasting society's resources.

This is an excellent post. Despite having the grades to get into an elite school I went to a community college while working to get experience. I then transferred to university. Seems like too many asians focus on status rather than practicality. Ivy leagues are focused too much on within asian communities and its usually for parental bragging rights. I kinda feel bad for asian kids because they miss out of a huge part of what american life is about.

I saw one of his interviews with one of the national media outlets and I wasn't impressed with him. The only thing impressive was that he was rejected by so many schools. He's a one trick pony. Look - He clearly is a coding genius with a combination of nature and nurture. When I was talking about this story with my teenagers, I talked about not just doing something, but being something. His start-up is impressive. He said he co-founded a student group to offer coding workshops to under-privileged communities, but he also went on to say he doesn't do much with it anymore because of time. That tells me he did it for the college application. As you mentioned, Google doesn't need him to be well-rounded. They just need him to be great at his job, which he will be great and do just fine in life. The NBA analogy doesn't make sense because it's like saying Google has too many computer science geniuses who are Asian. He wasn't competing for a spot in the Social Science, Arts, etc. departments. He was competing with other computer science applicants. I'm not sold on the anti-Asian "nerd" arguement. There was likely something there or not there that so many schools rejected him. He may not have grown up with struggles, but there is still a way to answer questions and write essays to tell a story of who we are and not just what we do. I understand and agree with the desire for transparency. There clearly are tons of people in top-tier schools who grow up without struggles. The U. of Wisconsin rejection is interesting. They have ~49% acceptance rate with >60% white and ~7% Asian. But he did get into U. of Maryland, which has about a 44% acceptance rate and ~17% Asian. And BTW - I'm a middle-aged Chinese American who grew up in the 80s and benefited from being Asian American. I was not and am still not an Asian "nerd". I do work with alot of Asian "nerds". So no, do not change your Chinese names. Think about who we are as individuals and who we are as part of a community.

Most likely a genius kid whose future is set regardless of the school he attends vs a kid from the inner city or middle class with skills who would could benefit from the elite university experience.. I can understand that because the lvl of school education matters.. It’s the difference between learning kung fu from Jet Li and learning from his student..It’s not quite the same..😂
