The wall is an emotional wall that he has built to protect him self from all the bad stuff that's happened during his life. However he feels trapped and isolated behind the wall. The worms eating into his brain is his own paranoia, depression and self doubts. The album or at least the film version of the wall is about a singer struggling with mental illness due to his childhood and life up to that point. Each song melds together and is like a chapter in a book. I recommend listening to the whole album from the start at some point even if you don't make a video of it.

One of the best "concept albums" ever made, "The Wall" is the journey throughout "Pink's" life of ever increasing disparity between what he feels will fullfil his life. Everything he contends with, the death of his father during WW2, his overbearing mother, opressive education system, material posessions, and even his musical stardom results in little solace for his troubled soul; each is a "Brick" in his Wall of isolation and self-loathing. "Comfortably Numb", "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2", and "Hey You" as well as the rest of this masterpiece, are anthems to meloncholy and the want of more than what you are and what you have.

They're the best band ever. Their music will be listened to for hundreds of years. Like Mozart or Beethoven

Pink Floyd's album, The Wall, is truely a masterpiece. From start to finish it describes band member, Roger Watters, experiences throughout his life that contributed to his mental and social challenges. Starting from his youth, watching his father go off to fight in WWII to having an over protective mother, dealing with mean teachers, later, being a rock star in a bad relationship, drugs, and so on. Brad should spend an hour or so off line with the lyrics and he will appreciate the genius. In short, The Wall is what he mentally constructed to protect himself from all of life's ills and all of those bad experiences were just bricks in the wall.

Pink Floyd were pioneers of the, 'concept album' in the 1970's. Every song in the album was a part of a larger story they were trying to tell. The Wall was one of those albums (I think it was a double-album). Those songs were all part of the story, The Wall dealt with people's tendencies to build a wall around themselves to shut people out and not let anybody in. "Hey You" was a call for help, a cry for human contact. It starts off with 'help me,' then 'hear me' and feel me and finally touch me. But as someone who has spent his life building this giant Wall around themselves - it was only a fantasy. He can't go over the Wall. So he begins to go crazy. Great reaction, guys!

The Wall is a double vinyl where we follow the main character - Pink as he goes through his life. In the first vinyl we observe how Pink builds a wall around himself and seals himself off from society. This is the first song on the second vinyl which is his first attempt at reaching out to another person after being behind his wall for so many years.

This solo just feels like it busts open a door in your house, latches on to you by the upper arm and marches you down the hall to show you something you desperately do not want to see.

David Gilmour playing guitar. David works basically inside the simple pentatonic scale, blues based, like a million guitarists before him. Yet when he starts playing, you instantly know his signature sound and approach. His notes can have an operatic feel, his vibrato is sublime, and the holes in his phrases punctuate his genius. This is how you make a guitar line into an anguished human voice. Yet so very few do.

The Wall as an album is brilliant, especially when considering the live show. During the first half of the album, a wall is literally being built on stage between the band and the audience. Once the wall was finished being built, they had the audience take an intermission. When the audience returned, Hey You is the first song played for the second half. It is played entirely behind the wall. The audience sees only the wall. When considering all of that, lyrically, it seems to be speaking directly to the audience member, while also keeping in step with the story arch within the album. Freakin brilliant.

It was December 31, 1999. I was in my middle teen years. Y2K was going to end us all. So that night I went to a bonfire, and tried the devil's lettuce for the first time, and someone put on the Floyd. Needless to say life was forever changed. I worked the next 6 months popping popcorn, cleaning, and working projectors in a movie theater to buy a Fender Stratocaster, and study the works of David Gilmour. Life was good. Still got the strat, and several others lol.

He also previously performed it in 1990 in Berlin after the fall of the Berlin wall.

If there is just one album you should listen from beginning to end, The Wall is it. It's a story, a concept. The individual songs are great on their own, of course, but the whole album is indeed more than the sum of the individual songs. And yes, as others have suggested, after listening to the album also watch the movie.

This is one of the most mysterious songs on The Wall. It seems to be about the longing for human interaction. The phrase "Hey You" implies calling out to someone (for example, "Hey you over there"). Following that phrase in every verse is a person in some sort of desperate or pathetic scenario. Most of these scenarios are pretty general but some are specific, for example, "You out beyond the wall breaking bottles in the hall," which gives the impression of a rebellious teenager, or "You standing in the road always doing what you're told," which gives the impression of someone who is very timid and indecisive. Following these scenarios in every verse is a question asking for human interaction, and as the song goes on these questions become more desperate in every verse: "Can you feel me?" When he says will you help me to carry the stone. He’s talking about a millstone around your neck. It’s a metaphor for a problem you can’t escape from, he’s asking for someone to help him with his problems. The wall is metaphorical it’s his defence he’s put up against the outside world created by his dad dying in the war and him never knowing him, his overbearing mother, teachers who were cruel to him, a wife who cheats on him and drug abuse. The worms eating into his brain is his fall into depression.

I was 10 when I watched "The Wall" on VHS for the first time and continued to listen to them in adolescence. After high school, I binged on all things Pink Floyd for a few years. I'm 46 now. I played two Floyd songs (Wish You Were Here and Time) with my band at a farmers market just last night. What I'm saying is: I f**king love Pink Floyd and have loved them for most of my life, and watching you two listen to and "get them" for the first time (I've watched about five of these) brings me so much joy! I should also mention that they are my second favorite band, if I can be simple and rank things that way. My undisputed favorite band is Ween. I want to be careful in recommending a song because they are all over the place and can be an acquired taste sorta thing. To start gently, pleeease check out "It's Gonna Be Alright", "Flutes of Chi", and/or "Chocolate Town". But then I want you to see how wild it gets so check out "Spinal Meningitis", "The Stallion Part 3", "Mutilated Lips", and/or "Voodoo Lady." These dudes have been at it for over three decades and have a following that will sell out Red Rocks Amphitheater three nights in a row but you've never once heard them on corporate radio. The first show they performed the ENTIRE Dark Side of the Moon, to perfection, us a dozen of their other hits! They have even mocked up some of the stage elements (with an AUSSIE spin on them)! Since a Pink Floyd show won't be happening this side of Rock and Roll Heaven, it's the next best thing! I've seen their show three times since then and they've also performed the Wish You Were Here and Animals albums....and never disappoint! There's also a Brit FLOYD... but not on par with TAPFS. They're currently touring Europe, and the COVID pandemic has impacted their schedule, but they always tour the US. I've seen them 3 times in Denver and once in Phoenix... never disappoint.
