From running 1:48.84 in the 800, to breaking the national record in the 3200 (8:33), to obliterating the national high school record for the cross country 5k, Colin Sahlman is running in rarified air.

His former teammate Nico Young might've been on that list if Covid-19 hadn't destroyed the 2020 outdoor season. Nico was jammin as a senior, having broken the NXN course record, and then the 3,000 indoor national record. Fast. Edit: Colin's 1500 split from that indoor mile was 3.44, which is fastest in the nation this year. He could prolly go sub 3.40 outdoors.

Another AMAZING video, man! Colin Sahlman easily cracks the Top 10 U.S. High School All-Time, and should probably be ranked in the Top 4, but not #1. If Sahlman would have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team in Tokyo as an 11th Grader last season, the way Jim Ryun made the Olympic team as an 11th Grader back in 1964 (coincidentally, also in Tokyo), it would be a tougher decision to make.

Im in my second last year of English secondary school (equatable to High school) I run a 3:50 1500m so I have a year to take off around 6 seconds to get my sub 4min mile before I leave what would he HS in America I train with a guy who won National 800m who does 1:50 And has a 3:44 1500 so is sub 4 in essence. And yet I’m only around top 25 in the U.K., is the US just much weaker per person at middle distance Or am I suffering from bias as I’m surrounded by incredibly fast people?

Ryun (let’s spell his name correctly!) was not just the best high school runner ever, he’s the best high school ANYTHING ever. He ran multiple sub four minute miles while in high school including in a state meet, on a cinder track, obviously running by himself. He ran under four minutes as a junior in high school. He made the freaking Olympic team when he was 17!! He was a household name in the United States as a teenage runner, which is simply unheard of.

@@jefffawcett I couldn't agree more. Also, as a high schooler in 1965, Ryun ran 3:55.3, within 1.7 seconds of the world record. No other high school miler has come anywhere near the world record. By comparison, Alan Webb ran 3:53.43. Faster than Ryun, but 10.3 seconds slower than the world record of 3:43.13 at the time. A great effort, but not even close to Ryun's achievement.

There's no doubt that Hobbs Kessler's National High School Record of 3:34 for the 1,500 meters, which is almost 5 seconds faster than Jim Ryun's High School best of 3:39 is a superior time, even when you figure the running shoes, faster tracks, nutrition and training. Kessler smashed Webb's 1500 meter H.S. time of 3:38 by 4 seconds. Hobbs also hold the H.S Record for the Indoor Mile with a 3:57. I ran against the likes of Rudy Chapa and Carey Pinkowski back in the late 70's. Both top rated high schoolers and teammates at that time. Not that they didn't perform extremely well at University of Oregon and Villanova they never really made it to the world class level. For Chapa is was an injury that ended his career. I was at UofO when he attempted his failed comeback. It was sad to witness. Salazar was there and Pinkowski showed up as well. Last I heard Pinky was the Director of the Chicago Marathon.

Hi @@richardmilliken8705 bit of a silly comment as I'm not saying he is is best of all time. Hi@@richardmilliken8705 at 16 this guy Nick Griggs was beating the best runners in Europe in the u20 championship who were all about 3 years older than him and running a final lap in 55 seconds. Agreed he should have his own video and when you say that you would give him "the edge" over Colin there is no argument at all. When Colin was aged 17 he was running 3,000m in 8m 34.68s and 5km in 14m 27s Nick at the same same was doing 3,000m in 7m 57s and 5k in 14m 15s so he is way ahead if we are comparing like for like and all of Nick's PBs today even are better than Colin's who is 14 months older. Looking forward to the video on him Andrew!

@@aidanorourke1632 Colin ran the 3K in 7:56.97, and the 3200m in 8:43 at 17 years of age and he won & ran the National High School XC 5K Championships in 14:03. The indoor mile is the only distance that Griggs has run faster than Colin. Grigg's 14:15.98 in the 5K on a track is nothing to write home about. I don't see Griggs coming close to Rupp's National H.S. 5K record of 13:37. Only time will tell, what kind of improvements both of these runners can. Jakob and the East Africans have produced much faster times on the track than any American or Ireland H.S. Athletes. I believe that Kipchoge ran the 5K in 12:50 at the age of 18.

Arguably he should be in the Top 10. But factoring in that he has teammates pushing him all the time which most athletes never have and certainly the people in the top 10 list. Then factor in the new super shoes that have been supplying the world with so many faster times they should be outlawed. And of course the advances in technology with track surfaces and such and maybe he cracks the top 12 realistically compared to that group. Btw I was an editor for the first NXN for Nike and was a historian for years.

TRP - nit pick #1: Eric Holt did not "miss going under 4 minutes by 1/1,000 th of a second". He missed *going* *under* by *2* thousandths. Nit pick #2: because USATF and World Athletics still do not recognize XC certified courses, and because a variety of methods are used to measure XC 5Ks, there is little consistency in "5K" XC courses. This throws some shade on XC records at any particular distance. There is at least one XC 5K that has been measured with a steel tape, which would definitely be accurate IF proper measuring protocols were strictly adhered to. Then, "of course", elevation profiles vary hugely between courses. It is interesting but not necessarily valid that any 5K XC performance can be compared to another on a different course. Thanks for the great video.

Inasmuch as I admire the legendary Steve Prefontaine, there is no question that Sahlman’s resume dwarfs that of Prefontaine. Sahlman’s pace in the 3200 beats Prefontaine’s pace for his 2 mile record. Prefontaine did run a 13:52 in the 5k on the track, which is astounding, but Sahlman’s 14:03 5k national record in XC is clearly a better mark. (That said, Prefontaine, as a high schooler Prefontaine had essentially no competition, no elite coaching, no elite training staff, and ran on cinder tracks in rural Oregon in the 1960’s… but we’re not talking about how great Prefontaine could have been if he were in high school today, we’re talking about his actual achievements as much as they could be compared). I can’t wait to see what Sahlman and his Newbury Park teammates do this outdoor season.

Factor in a short season and you could argue how talented Nico really was then and now. My point is the athletes have to run the courses but it takes the right culture and hats off to brosnen for creating the vision and having the tools for these kids to develop so well.
