This was pretty easy as far as most groundings go. He was stuck enough that he wasn’t getting off on his own, but not so stuck that I struggled to break it free. The two mistakes he made were not letting out enough anchor line (scope) and not having a TowBoat US membership. The first mistake resulted in him dragging anchor and running aground causing him to have to call us for help. The second one caused him to have to pay $1205 out of pocket for that help. That’s 6 YEARS of our top-tier membership dues! I have SeaTow, but will also sign up for BoatUS ... this is is my area that I boat in. Its not a question of "will you run aground here, but a question of when". Access to the Gulf via Big Pass is constantly shifting, and is a nail biter every time we go through it. Nice videos by the way. This sailor is a novice, you can tell from the very moment he is handed the line and he has no clue on how or where to attach it, but we all had to learn :-)

I feel for this guy. I remember when I was a new sailor and the nerves were definitely high. I'm sure he will become one of the more knowledgeable folks out there, due to his pick of boat. Fortunately, the keel of this Hunter is pretty short. That small dansforth hook looks too small for his 30 foot sailboat as well. I'm sure his next purchase will be a large Rocna or something similar and a lot of chain to weigh it down to get the right angle for a 7:0 scope. Hopefull he can make a lot of friends where he is. This was one of the best things I did when I got a sailboat.

I was just thinking that he should have sent his coordinates and that bit that he was using Navionics popped up...oh wow, some people! The guy needs to take some training to learn the ropes! Sounds like he didn't know how much anchor line was needed to keep it stuck. ((I should wait to comment, you just commented on the same thing right after I saved LOL)

When I first bought my sailboat boat I was not comfortable anchoring so I reserved a mooring ball at Marina Jacks for the night on my way north. I remember that mooring field.

I bought my 44 hunter with no experience. Kept on a dock full of hunters and became a sponge of knowledge. I learned 6:1 scope but increase in strong winds and other conditions. I sure learned a lot but will always consider myself a novice at best. Q

Any sailboater I have know knew exactly where they were and how to read coordinates. Also I didn’t know a soul that didn’t have tow insurance and everyone I knew was with Tow Boat US. I am really getting into these videos.

Have seen a couple of your vids now and wonder, if over there in the US everybody can just hop onto a proper boat and sail around. You got so many customers that have not the drop of an idea, how they should place the towline, how to do a knot and so on - here in Germany (and I think this aplies to most or even all of Europe) you have to absolve a course and an exam to be allowed to helm a boat over a certain size/engine power. What did he think, when he started to drag your towline all across his boat to fix it on the other side? I'm not a sailor butI'd not try to tow sideways and ignoring the lifelines etc. Respect for your always calm and respectful manner.

Thanks mate! Most states over here now require a safe boaters course for any vessel over 10hp I think it is...but it's only a written test and it's open book, so if you can't pass it, you really shouldn't be on the water. However, there is no size limit...so technically I believe as long as there aren't any paying passengers, any random person could operate a cruise ship if someone would let them 😬

I started Good Seamaritan Rescue a 100% volunteer Rescue organization in Stratford Connecticut in 1958 with a 1958 13' Boston Whaler... Back in the day most everyone on the Housatonic River helped everyone in need... Then in the 80s things changed😂... BoatUS and SeaTow... If I have to explain you're too young😂... Just watched this guy on the other video. He needs to go to Sarasota squadron and take sailing lessons from an ASA instructor and he should be a much better navigator if he completes the courses. Just 101 even. If he passes that then 103,104 then he would be a much better sailor! But; he looks like he lives in the boat and doesn’t really sail much

@@CaptKenO I think he means dont be too hard on a newbie boat learner, i for one would not have been doing that when i was learning and even after i got my lic as i read up boating in every book/gained real world experience. Some do others dont, these fine men are risking thier lives due to ignorace that can result in death of the man he rescued as well as the rescuer. Seen similar one couldnt tie a bow line i like wtf, each to their own. But i feel you have a right to speak your mind due to what happened.

It boggles my mind how people can get their hands on the controls of a boat and not know crap about determining position, navigation, basic boat handling, yadda yadda etc. The most powerful watercraft I've ever controlled is a 2 person jetski and that's more than a decade ago. The only *training* I have in boating is basic boater safety back in the late 70s or early 80s in grade school. But the more boating videos I watch the more certain I am that I know far more about all the above than at least 70% of the people running most of the boats I see. As much as I'd like to own and operate a decent size live-aboard ... the aparent knowledge level of the average fellow boater terrifies me more more than the aparent competance of the average driver on todays roads.

This poor guy don’t know crapola about boats or boating . I don’t understand people want to tie up over their railing, don’t the realize you are going to pull it off like that. Some people don’t need to be on the water, period. I’m currently enquiring about a tow boat us franchise in the Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound out of Deal Island MD. Buying a 25’ c.hawk pilot house with inboard /outboard 350 Chevrolet engine, and 2 steering stations.

We ran the 350 in a 21ft shamrock when I worked in Venice, and they're good, but I'd much rather a diesel if I was going to run an inboard again

I'd advise against an I/O for any work boat. You want twin outboards so you can twin screw when on the hip. Additionally, you'll be able to get in skinny water. Cats are great for twin screwing because the engines are far apart. The shamrock is an exception to the rule. Yes, they are true inboards, and yes they are slow...but torque and stability are there. Why are they an exception? Because the have a FULL KEEL. However, I own an 88 26' predator as my fishing boat. I love it for what it does, but it steers like dogshit... You can't be scared to goose the throttle. Working for Seatow CNJ, I would HATE to run a single screw on Barnegat Bay. It's bad enough that our Boat US competition has all beautiful new RIBs. 3 silverships out of the 7 boats they have. Our equipment isn't as good, but I'd like to believe we have the finest 4 captains in the area.
