“He’s Easily Shaken” | Explaining Philippe Coutinho’s Decline Since Leaving Liverpool
What went wrong for Philippe Coutinho? After leaving Liverpool, where his performances had elevated him to one of the world’s best attacking players under Jurgen Klopp, he has failed to reach those same heights, and finds himself being shopped around by his parent club, FC Barcelona. His massive wage budget makes him a financial liability for many, including his loan club, Bayern Munich, who recently declined to make his loan move a permanent one. Here, we’ll try to examine and explain Philippe Coutinho’s downfall since leaving Liverpool.

@RollsReus _ MR11 Yes they are, you think they are not human? And the point is that especially players like Coutinho, get affected more easily than others. He left the team and they won 4 titles, meanwhile he doesn't even know where he will be next season. Impossible that it doesn't make him depressed. Imagine you had a girlfriend who loved you and you broke up with her and 2 months later she wins $20 million in the lottery while you are homeless.

Unlike Torres I have ZERO sympathy for Coutinho .... Klopp did EVERYTHING he could to convince him it was a mistake to go ... and when you ignore personal advice and love from a man like Klopp ... you'll probably reap what you sow ... Torres had watched Liverpool slowly sell many of their best players in the time since they finished second ... and he was being managed by Roy Hodgson while Liverpool's owners were bleeding the club dry. He left a team in crisis ... and it was understandable, even if he seems to now regret doing it. Phil left a club that was finally starting to burn brightly ... The short-lived 'fab four' with Mane, Salah and Firmino was an UNREAL attacking unit, easily the best in world football ... and he could have been part of that.

But out of 3 people that left the club (Owen / Karius / Coutinho) if i were to pick just one that would be forgiven leaving our lovely club i would probably forgive only Loris Karius. That devastating night that cost us the 6th (which we've had wone 1 year later though with these mentality monsters of ours xD) is still nothing compared to leaving the club for money like in Phil's case or worse yet - leaving for the VARchester Divded scums. Honest to god - Michael Owen is a fucking rat who wanted to get easy cheese. Guess what? A fucking rat has to work his sorry ass to bite that cheese he's just a disgracefull rat who's went to Varchester Divided scums to win trophies. If it is Phil's case if he would reflect on himself and his actions - i would take him back. His displays at Liverpool could become legendary. They still can if people will say sorry to themselves and if he could be forgiven that is. I do miss his plays and long range stunners. We've lost Stevie Gerrard not so long ago he's had to retire and the one and only man who could try to fill in with the quality of Stevie's bangers could be just Coutinho and nobody else - but well thats just my opinion.

@@TheChannelofaDisappointedMan maybe, but Klopp knew he struggled against teams who likes to play in their own half instead of an attacking football, that's why in the 17/18 season we beat City only to lose to Swansea, Coutinho thrived against those teams because of his skill and creativity, that's why Klopp was very eager to buy Keita.
@craigbeckley2710
@craigbeckley2710 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, to me, Coutinho's decline shows how and why Klopp can get the best out of players. Klopp plays a proper system. He gives everyone a clear and precise plan of action. It's almost a fool-proof system where, as long as you're following the instructions, even average players can contribute beyond their individual assets. Clearly, Barcelona has a much less rigid system of play where you are encouraged to use your imagination to develop the play. Coutinho's performances at Liverpool were due to the consistency of the play. Every time he received the ball, he knew where the other players were going to be and, using muscle memory, could act according to each situation. When he left Liverpool, that muscle memory no longer fit the team he was playing with, giving him that appearance of someone who was 'lost'.
@szczepan4737

half of barcelonas team is used to playing for possession where the other half like coutinho/greizman are constantly looking to make attacking runs meaning they're never going to get the ball during possessing plays. In premiere league the teams are always trying to push the ball forward vs. sending the play back which can be awkward to adjust to or catch any sort of rhythm when you're not touching the ball. Coutinho always looked best on barcelona when he was carrying the ball as he was used to in liverpool

I haven’t even mentioned defenders and midfielders, as there are many of them who improved their careers after joining the Reds. But he is a player who needs to be playing in a free 10 role. He simply doesn't have the discipline or physique to be an effective CM or LW. He truly is the perfect player for the free 10 role with his technique, movement and goal threat. In that sense, he reminds me of Ozil and Mata, who also were always at their best as the free 10. I hope he can find a club that allows him to play to his strengths. He can still be a key player for a top team, I have no doubt.

It didn't work out that way but I don't think most Liverpool fans think there was any foresight of that. It is never guaranteed that when you buy replacement players they will fit in and there was an element of luck that both Van Dyke and Allison cam good right away. Fabinho took a little longer to settle in and - as if to illustrate the point - Naby Keita, who many people expected great things from, never really has.

Only issue raise that coutinho is old format player and Barcelona brought him for that. But now 2-3 years football is changed aggressively, now control is more important than dribble and spectaculars. So he is not good prospect as 2015. Without shear speed you can't beat teams like Liverpool/ManCity/PSG/Salsburg/Ajax etc. So coutinho is worthless vs this teams. So no big team willing to spend sum of money Barcelona asking. And Barcelona miss the trend, they miss judge the new format of football. So they spend this amount for a old format player. And his market value now near zero compare what they paid.

This is breaking my heart :( I was really exited about Coutinho coming to Bayern, although I hate loans (for non-youth players). But hearing about the 120M€ buy-option was a shock, because it was clear that Bayern would never pay that, even if he won us the triple by himself. A lose-lose situation: if he was a hit Barca would either want him back or insist on the 120M€, or if he was a flop Bayern wouldn't be interested in keeping him. From the beginning it felt like Bayern didn't want or at least didn't need him to succeed, since they had their eyes set on other players like Havertz already. Cou's performances weren't what I dreamed of, but it is still a pleasure to watch a player with such skills and such elegance. And I wouldn't say that he can't decide games, he clearly did against Bremen. Sure, if you only look at the result and the current table, it seems like no big deal, but at that time we had just lost twice in a row against Leverkusen and Gladbach (were 7th in the league, Bremen 14th and not on a relegation spot yet). We were down 0:1 at the end of the first half. So this could have been quite the upset, as we saw in the second game against Bremen that they can hold up against Bayern and stop them from scoring. With three losses back to back, Bayern might have lost the last two games of the Hinrunde aswell, the Freiburg game was a last minute win already and with the added pressure... who knows if that would have happened. But instead, Coutinho turned the game around with one goal and one assist right before halftime, which must have destroyed any hopes Bremen had, and then it was a gala performance in the second half. It was the starting point of the undefeated run that is still going to this day. Quite a pivotal game this season ;-) And it is not like he was bad against the better opponents (Top5 of Bundesliga + Spurs/Chelsea in CL), he just never got the chance to acutally play against them (at least not as a starter) except for Spurs and in those games he was good (although the second one was more of a friendly). Even under Kovac, who played him a lot, he didn't start against Leipzig because he had been travelling to play for Brazil in the international break. I feel like he didn't quite get the chance he needed to prove himself on the higher level. Every good performance was "just because of a weak opponent". In theory Flick would be an ideal coach for him as he has been compared to Heynckes a lot when it comes to his people skills. And the Bayern fans are usually very kind to players (obviously not the majority of fans on youtube or twitter, but that is the case for every club, I guess. A lot of hate there). The club prides itself on its family atmosphere. It doesn't get much better than that for a player without much confidence, at least at a top club, where a high amount of pressure is always there due to the high competition between players. He didn't play after the Corona break yet due to injury, but will be back in the squad tomorrow, and I am very curious to see how he does without spectators. It might be good for him to not have this added pressure. Maybe he will shine in the Champions League in August. I will not give up hope until it is really over :(

In hindsight, I don´t see a place for him in the current Liverpool, so it worked for the better. Having to fit a star in a scheme that basically doesn't use his position is a headache for managers, just watch Griezmann in Barcelona this year. Coutinho has the same problem at Bayern, our CAM needs to be much more involved in the combination play than in finishing unless you're a genius at being in the right place like Muller, so a player likes Coutinho that tends to dribble a lot and shot before touching the ball kind of hogs the ball too much. Same problem with James before him. Also, defend, defend, defend. The only guy allowed to not run behind the ball is Robert, and that´s because he is the striker. Lazy defenders pay it dearly in Bundesliga

I blame Barca for this because if they didn't approach P.C, then there really wasnt any other club willing to pay the 9 figure fee except for maybe PSG. He wasn't replacing anyone at Barca nor was he going to continue his performances from the season prior at Liverpool, as his role collided with that of Leo and put Barca in a problematic situation with 2 players now having less defensive duties than others around. It honestly was a "shoot first and aim later" type of situation, now both Barca and P.C look as stupid as one another, well especially Barca as they went on to spend yet another 9 figures on A.G who again really wasn't needed. Adrain quality video as always bro, hope all is good with you, your family and friends. 💪✌ Could you please consider a video about the drastic change of Barca, a team who stuck firmly with there own philosophy of football, producing a multitude of absolutely class players and also a class manager in Pep to recently becoming a lavish spending club who heavily rely upon the efforts of one specific lad for inspiration. They have lost their identity and I ll go as far to say, their soul in the process, their just not the same team anymore. Anyways take care buddy ✌

Great analyzes man! You've nailed literally every aspect of Coutinho's decline! Therefore, I'd only say that the only coach (currently) who can do that for Coutinho (inspired him, give him the much needed confidence and put him in his natural role) is probably Rino Gattuso! He's definitely the kind of a aoch who boosts positive confidence into his players, and it'd be great to see how Napoli will do under him in the first full season with Rino (so far, it's obvious that their only side where they must improve is the realisation of goals, or more precisely, converting their chances - as it was best demonstrated in Barcelona game, where they hold the position, created numerous clear chances, outplayed Barca in many aspects, but didn't convert). Sadly for Coutinho, there's no chance Napoli would spend 80 million for him, when they just spend that money for Victor Osimeh, who's most likely gonna be the future model for a top striker! Their next 50-100 million will be distributed on a few more positions (two more, most likely). So, I really can't see a team that will spill that much money for Coutinho and bring him back to his Liverpool glory!

Phil Coutinho is one of my favourite all time players when he's on form. Absolute magic. But at Liverpool he was the main man who we looked to when we were struggling, and he'd take the game by the scruff of the neck. Even though Neymar is a bigger player for Brazil, Coutinho plays with that same level of importance for his country. However, at Barcelona, he clearly wasn't the main man, with Barcelona already having Messi/Suarez, and and having brought in Dembele for a similar amount of money a few months prior. At Bayern, Lewandowski/Muller/Gnabry are their main players, so he isn't the one they go to when things are tough. If the money aspect wasn't an issue, I'd love him back at Liverpool, as I think he's the one type of player we lack in the team - a real creative force from behind the front three. But I can't see how he'd play most games any more. I still think he'd be a great player for most clubs around Europe, but he'd be a bit-part player at the top clubs, and the clubs just below won't be able to afford him, so he's in a sticky situation. His best bet for reviving his career is to try and prove himself again when he returns to Barca, and try to rediscover his form there.

Yup. How often have We seen it? "A Star Rises" & is expected to become the next "Big Thing" & as soon as They ain't the "centre of attention", They begin to crumble. They lack the ability to adapt. They are just unable to be a "Team" Player. That's Coutinho. It's unfortunate. He can do it for His Country, but is unable to fit into the required Level of Discipline Demanded at the Richest Clubs in Europe, whom are the only ones that can now afford Him. I can see Him spending a lot of time on the Bench until His Price comes down, unless some Ultra-rich Benefactor comes along & buys a Club out of the blue & decides to give Him one last dash...

I'd argue that since say 2012, the only players Barca have bought that have been a success are Neymar and Suarez.

Coutinho was quite outstanding in his first season in Barcelona playing in that CAM role. He started having problems when Valverde switched him to the left as LW. The issue is Valverde is a worser coach than Coutinho is a bad player.

Was mad at him when he left for barca. But its been a blessing in disguise. Firmino stepped up to the plate and bloomed beautifully in his departure. I dont think coutinho could have put in the sheer work rate like present day firmino has day after day, match after match. Maybe the klopp could have fit him in the team somehow(?) but i cant imagine him being able to keep up with the team right now.

"Alisson, Van Dijk and Fabinho comming thanks to Coutinho CASH" is biggest myth... Barcelona still owes Liverpool like 40m from this transfer. What a scummy club...in debts like hell....and that's where they are heading for their behaviour...Karma Barca :)

Part of the problem is that it's very difficult to fit a player like Coutinho into a modern system. He isn't a good enough goal scorer to be a striker, he isn't dynamic enough to be a winger and he can easily become a defensive liability in midfield. I believe he would have been an absolute superstar 20-30 years ago but few teams these days have a place for the free-roaming virtuoso in attacking midfield. Players like James, Isco and Özil have struggled for similar reasons in recent years.

This serves as a message to current or future player's. If you get to play for LFC, some temptations aren't worth pursuing, try your hardest to never leave. History of many players now who wanted to push a transfer away seems to prove they jinx themselves 🤷‍♂️
Borussia Dortmund's season makes zero sense...
