Tis the season for LAME SHEEP! In this video we are looking at Vlad our old ram who is lame. Treating in him swiftly because we need him to be fit and working at this crucial time. Also we apply the raddle / paint to the Tups but it doesn’t really go that well and I feel a bit deflated ! Better luck next time I guess. A general look at how the sheep are doing at this time of year as it’s the later stages of our tupping season and I explain why we didn’t raddle the rams initially back in November ! Thanks for watching! Joanna. X

Summer is busy but everything is harder to do in the winter - you are normally wet and cold to the bone being outside and if it has rained with no sun covered in mud - farmers work all summer to get ready for winter

Hi Joanna. Good on you for saying publicly when you feel like crap because of SAD. There will be someone watching this who will be inspired to discuss the problem instead of keeping it to themselves. Do you have lights for SAD, and if so, are they helpful? Also, I wonder if there is a sheep farmer somewhere called, Mr Tupping! Sending kind thoughts and good vibes from down south.

Best wishes to you & Nick & its great seeing the resilient endeavour you keep showing in farming & It's so interesting learning about the Raddle method & I understand it. Brighter Days ahead x

Hi Joanna, Tupping time has soon come around again, time seems to go so fast. Vlad has that serious look on his face again. I had to laugh with the green paint on him, it reminded me of the Grinch 🤣 This time of year gets a lot of people down with it's short daylight hours and wet weather. Spring will soon be here before we know it...🙂👍🏻

The sheep look good with the loving care you and Nick take with them. The day after rain and grey skies can certainly drain a person. The good news is Winter Solstice is just around the corner. So you can dance with light from a fire or even a candle, if its too cold, and visualize the sun in its glory for lighter days. In Shetland they have a night that they have a huge parade through Lerwick with lighted torches (the real thing) and set a premade Viking Ship on fire. (Helley Up). Of course, at Christmas it is candles and lights everywhere. Wishing you and NIck the sweetest Holiday Season and the magic that comes with a fabulous/profitable/healthy New Year!.

Hi Donna ! We have been experiencing a really rubbish week! Storms / 60-70mph winds + rain ( that’s over 100 kph wind speed) I find it quite stressful to deal with especially the worry of damage or the risk to livestock from fallen trees etc! It’s due to last Sunday Sunday I think. Perhaps then it will get better and thank goodness we have reached the mid winter I absolutely hate winter when it’s like this!! Cannot enjoy time outdoors

This is why we should all eat local, you both are a perfect example of why we produce the best standards of care and animal husbandry in the World. You care for them you provide licks and quality feed for them to the best of your ability through rain and shine and especially the dark rank weather, true professional’s. It’s not easy. May I be so bold to suggest a little time off, perhaps a little date night kind of thing a meal, a walk around the shops local whist drive darts night etc. just to get out of that environment for a few hours would be good for both of you.

Thank you so much! Yes a lot of people say how great farming is as a life / job but it is definitely hugely challenging also and you have to do it and live it yourself to fully understand. We are very grateful to those who support farmers and take interest in the process of what we get up to ! Lately it’s been such a terrible spell of weather, so many people say they are struggling to stay positive with it !! Hope you are doing okay and Christmas can bring us all some cheer in the darkness

That’s the trouble with bringing in new stock. I kept a closed flock and managed to get on top of the problem with footbathing at every yarding regardless, but fair to say I didn’t have to contend with CODD. Youthful Nick, give her a slap from me! I think you were trying to say that the scanning will find out the barrens. I used to make a figure of 8 bandage around the treated feet which stayed on just long enough to keep the medication in contact with the affected area thus making it more effective.

Anything we can do to help you keep your chin up?! I know what you mean about seasonal blues, though the nights only have a few more days of drawing in. Sounds like Vlad is still ‘delivering’. I believed the test to be how many the other ram tupped after he’d been at them, and answer is ‘not many’. I’m sure I know another shepherd who only uses raddle on the second round. I guess you have a record of which ewes are in which tupping group. Don’t let Chase hear you say there’s more than one way to skin a cat!
@JohntyNich
@JohntyNich 7 ай бұрын
I think pre scanning, raddling first cycle made more sense as you could spot the ones repeatedly coming back to the tup and likely to be barren rather than cycling later in the year. Bit different for pedigrees or those with numbers that splitting the first week might help. Everyone else is doing out of tradition really unless they aren’t scanning.
