According to the news story I read the eight year old's brother knocked him off the wire with his book bag. That's some quick thinking for a 10 year old. Poor kids. I hope this little guy heals. My heart goes out to the family and great job to the officers that risked their own lives to save this kid and get him to the hospital quickly.

From what I was able to find, the boy has permanent brain damage and had to have reconstructive surgery done on his hands. Both him and his older 10 year old brother were electrocuted. I believe the older brother is the one who pulled him off of the line hanging 4ft above the road and got electrocuted in the process. Somehow, one of the lines off camera was touching the ground and electrifying the wet spots on the road. When they pull him away in the video, look closely at the ground, you can see the burn spots where his heels, tailbone and the back of his head were touching the ground. “The younger brother went through the caution tape and grabbed a wire that was hanging at about five feet and tried to lift the wire up over his head and received a jolt,” said McAdams. “His older brother hit him with his backpack and was attempting to pull his brother away from the wire when the police came and removed the child from the wire.”

The way he went from crying, to silent, to screaming in pain was horrible. But those police officers did a wonderful job comforting him and keeping him informed. edit: thanks everyone for explaining that it was the boy's brother we heard crying in the video. In cases of electrocution it's extremely dangerous to try and help the person because you can easily be electrocuted next, which is why people hesitate. I believe for electricians and other people who work with electricity, the first thing they have to do to help is leave the person and shut off the power, which in this case isn't possible because it's an outdoor power line.

I once passed through a downed tree on a sidewalk and nearly gave myself a damn heart attack when I saw a power line in the branches right next to my passenger window. That was way closer than I ever want to be to a wire ever again. This situation is so far beyond that. The fact the cops who grabbed him were expressing pain just from touching him shows how serious it was, but they did what needed to be done, props to them.

It's an amazing act of bravery and then he is talking to the boy while petting his head the whole time and then carrying him to the back of a cruiser to drive to the hospital because they didnt want to wait for an ambulance to get the kid the help he needed. Honestly an A+ human being. I have to warn you though, the part where they're racing to the hospital is excruciating because the kid is finally conscious and the pain sets in. I can only think that with 'hot' they refer to his body being warm from the electricity that has passed through his body. If the officers, in some way got shocked as well, you would have seen or heard it: either by arcflash, buzzing noises or the officers retracting as they would get shocked everytime they would try to touch him. I did an experiment with battery powered equipment once to try and see how little current it takes to feel it (there are well-known charts online, but I wanted to see what a wet concrete floor does to those numbers): I was quite stunned to see that at just 0,3 mA or so, with me standing on a wet concrete floor, covered with ceramic tiles (shower) I already got a 'holy **** it's live' kind of reaction. If the kid would have been 'hot' as in 'energised', the officers most likely would not have had any possibility to touch him without getting injured (or even killed) themselves.

The older brother’s reaction is heart breaking. That’s gotta be terrifying. His quick acting definitely saved his little brother’s life, but I don’t fault him for coming unglued. Pretty sure most adults wouldn’t be able to handle that situation any better. As for his brother, getting electrocuted fries nerves, shreds muscle. Even if the person looks fine on the outside it’s absolutely devastating internally. The fact the little guy can’t do much but scream once he wakes up isn’t remotely surprising. I feel horrible for both of them, and the cops. I think most people are naturally protective of little kids to at least some degree. It’s gotta be pretty horrible knowing that little boy is in so much pain and there’s not really anything you can do for him besides getting him to the hospital.

He didn't feel 120. Those are high voltage, between 7000 and 23,000 volts depending on their intended use. The wire was probably dead, not carrying the usual voltage, but those cables are super capacitive, he probably had the equivalent of a couple thousand volts for a split second as all the remaining energy dumped through him like a flash bulb on a camera.

These kids were elementary so I think elementary would be necessary. Maybe start it 3 - 12. IDK or get parent signatures first. I would have wanted things like this shown to my children. My youngest is in 6th grade and his school last year 5th grade these kids were bad. One girl in his class caught the girls bathroom on fire. So teaching them and actually showing them the consequences of doing certain things can cause horrible injury or death. When I was a kid 6th grade we had dare to keep kids drug free and police would come and teach us about drugs and gangs and show us gun violence and they showed some scary stuff but I guarantee it got through to some. Being real and honest is the best lesson. You make it a teachable moment. Just my opinion.
